The DS1 works best with the tone at 10 o' clock and lower. Then you can also cranck up the gain. The best is to mod it and make it sound like a tight hi-gain distortion pedal.

I just got myself a DS-1 after more than 15 years playing with the DS-2 and it struck me how I've never noticed how "boxy" the DS-2 sounds! If you're looking for some Nirvana classic tones, the DS-1 is your best option in my opinion. God, even In Utero riffs sound better to me in a DS-1!
I love the raw, electric sound of the DS-1. It reminds me of the old school Marshall gain, but I also feel like it's versatile enough to give a modern progressive tone. I feel like the mids on the DS-2 need to be scooped a bit, but I also can't say much because I don't typically play songs that require that kind of tone.
Ds1 definitely, more warmer, more true, great tone, twenty years ago i didn't liked it (but i was looking for a more compressed sound), now i'm happy with my two Caline od, the pure sky and the orange. Good Job mate.
I´m a bit biased to give an opinion, since I have a DS2. I like its more rounded sound if compared to DS1. However, I like the DS1 sound as well, as long as the tone control is not maxed out. : )
I've always hated the sound of mode 2 on the DS-2. After hearing this comparison, I hate mode 1 also. The DS-1 sounds great! Its successor sounds like a bad clone with two flavors of yuck.
DS2 is not really a successor or a clone, it’s just a different distortion pedal, with a very different circuit. DS1 produces a vintage distortion whereas DS2 produces grunge sound : dirt, compressed with many larsen and harmonics.
Great comparison, Rob. To be fair, i started off loving the DS2, re listened, and now prefer the DS1. You're right, it does cut through better. The DS2 seemed to get very flabby when turned way up. I'm playing a Blues Driver now, so not sure a change is warranted for what I'm playing. Maybe in a few months. Love the cheeky opening sequence! Cheers mate.
Thanks for this Rob. I was actually looking at these two and getting ready to buy the DS-2 until I heard it here side-by-side with the DS-1. Pretty obvious now that the DS-1 is more my thing. The difference is so huge it's easy to identify each sound just listening while writing in the comments section.
I own a DS-2 and it's one my favorite effects pedals and it's a real learning experience for me because in mode 1 I have to out smart the pedal so it doesn't sound too muddy sometimes and in mode 2 I just max it out and it sounds like a fuzz which is great because I have a Fender Champion 40 watt amplifier
Have used a DS2 for a while, and I always wanted one since Nirvana times when I read in some magazine that he used it towards teh end. At last I now have both. I must say that yes they are very different, the DS2 is defeinitely not just a DS1 with a turbo mode. There's more going on and I'm not quite sure what is different. Mine also have teh noticeable difference in level when both are set at 12 (DS1 being louder at 12). The DS1 is surprisingly easy to like, you get a nice distortion sound quite easily. I watched this video about a year ago and promised myself I'd come back when I got both, and here it is! I think both of these are great. The DS1 was intended to work with overdriven amps and it works in that context really well. DS2 is more of a standalone pedal which you can run into a clean amp as your core distortion sound. I like how you can switch between the two channels to get more mids for leads. That said DS1 in front of a marshall with my guitar's volume control is great.

So cheap to pick up too second hand which is good.
The good old faithful 🤘😎
Not sure what the big fuss is about the Ds1. I bought one and it sounded garbage, no matter how I dialed it in. Was sold on eBay within a week
What kind of guitar is that brother? Very pretty.
A Partscaster I built on the channel 💯🎸
Para RATM cual de los dos me recomiendan?
Ds1
DS-1 is Marshall type sound.
DS-2 mode II is more rounded distortion.
Prefer the DS-2 mode II sound. 😊
i don't know if i buy Boss DS-1 or Boss DS-2
DS 1 is the shit!!
It sure is 🎸🤘
ds-1 forsure
Cuts far better 🤘🎸
o ya got more punch to it

Glad you digged it
DS-1 Cobain DS-2 McCready
Ds1 sounded better. The DS2 is designed for going with the rig a bit more ,delay etc
Kinell rob, did u see dave simpson's q and a vid tonight??? Haha he was saying how honoured he is to be up there with all the guitar greats like jimi hendrix and John frusciante hahaha, he genuinely believes he's an all-time great, that boy is one step away from a straight jacket!!! I dont normally watch his channel but couldn't believe what I was hearing
😂😂 what a bell 😂🤣🤣🤣
no rarely watch any of his videos he's weird and cringey
@@theguitarmanifesto aint he just!, freaky
He's up there with Rob Chapman 😂
He lives not far up from where I live 🤪
@@theguitarmanifesto that rob chapman, can't stand him either, who lives near u? Simpson??
Hard to go wrong if you learn how to use boss!
2:53 :)
didn’t know they made a mcdonald’s signature guitar
It's Burger King 🔥🍔👑🔥
@@theguitarmanifesto i respect it lol, definitely a unique design
The lack of Frusciante DS-2 comments on here is disturbing. Have some respect.

I didn’t know Jesse Lacey was British!??!?!!
Guess you need an eye test
DS2 turbo sounded pretty muddy 👎
agreed, I recorded several songs on an EP with the DS2 and I had to give the guitar tracks a lot of midrange love to get the mud out. I like the DS1 more now.
The tone of my DS2 is at 3 o’clock for a good tone. I think it’s a mistake to put it a 12 o’clock.
is that a Spanish guitar? XD
😂😂 🇪🇸🎸
The only pedal I have is a broken crybaby wah pedal😂
I disagree, the DS1 sounded awful I thought and very thin. The DS2 sounded much better and both pedals sounded best at 12 oclock.
J'ai beuggé j'ai un morceau qui ressemble comme deux gouttes d'eau a un de la vidéo! ua-cam.com/video/COK8LKMzI50/v-deo.html
