      I think maybe Vax’s inner thoughts as he faces the Briarwoods. Both as the initiation into Liam O’Brien’s expression of his characters’ vulnerabilities, and as such a change in tension/emotion from the situation Vax was in. 😢 It was one of those moments that (once again) really made the characters come alive for me.
      P.S.: Congrats on the 100th video!

      I was a bit disappointed if only because they changed the emotion. In the campaign he's just so DONE with bullshit today. Vax nearly died, Vex got hit by a finger of death, the Briarwoods got away... and when he's almost home this basic bitch criminal tries to fuck with him, and he just snaps. This guy could have done anything with his time but now his soul is going to be nibbled on by Orthax for eternity.

    TBH, i think the old lady incident in itself isn't too much of a big deal if it was an isolated incident. I think this was Matt very firmly saying (after giving a few warnings beforehand) *hey, you guys are recognized in this city you need to be careful*. From what I remember from early stream and heard about from pre-stream VM had the tendency of going all out on some kills when it came to the level of violence. That's not a bad thing, and it seems like everyone at the table is chill with it, so it's less "Hey you guys need to stop" and more "If you guys are gonna do that, be careful when you do it in Emon."

    27:15 No, the kill was one hundred percent the problem. The old lady was under a sleep spell and defenseless. It wasn't a self defence combat kill. It was a brutal murder. And you saw the episode, you saw how Orion got Tiberius to kill this lady. Not only was it violent, sadistic, over the top and cruel, it was unnecessarily out of character for Tiberius. It was a horrible thing done for shock value only. And it's really hypocritical to be fine with that but then have a problem with scalping. Either cruel mutilation is ok or it's not. Vox Machina are far from perfect, upstanding individuals, but they're still heroes. They shouldn't and aren't the people to mutilate foes for fun, even Percy. There was a reason they stopped him from torturing the coachman.

    • @MysticColorsAttack
      @MysticColorsAttack 6 місяців тому +2

      I don't agree. Yes the kill is obviously is an issue (and the fact that it's a fucking mortal kombat fatality does tiberious no favors in-world), but that's not really the point Mike was trying to make. As he explains in the next episode, Tiberius doesn't learn from this encounter and its consequences. You might say that its ooc for Tiberius to murder someone so brutally, and lets say that's true, the point still is that Orion is not taking the world seriously that he doesn't have Tiberius reflect on these actions of brutally murdering a defenseless woman.
      So yeah, the kill is very bad. What's worse is later not having Tiberius go 'wow that was fucked', and even more try to justify the kill

I was already loving the previous episodes but everyone in the cast really started dialling it to 11 in this episode. The stakes felt so much higher, Liam's speech made me very (ofc, it's Liam), the fighting was so damn cool, everything about the episode was great. I didn't even notice the turn of the players policing themselves more and more but that's something I appreciate even more about this episode. It also makes me a lil sad, Orion, in my opinion, had more of a video game tendency towards the game and therefore fit the least with the more dramatic turn CR was taking at the time. I genuinely would have liked to have seen what Tiberius could have done in the future arcs of Vox Machina if Orion had been able to deal with his issues in a better way

    Regarding Matt improvising "glissfoil," I thought he said (and rewound to clarify) kingsfoil, the common name of athelas, the plant Aragorn uses in Lord of the Rings. And honestly, it's what popped into my head when the group asked what it was before I heard what Matt said, which might have caused my confusion. So, not saying that what Matt makes looks effortless is actually easy, but I think a good chunk of improvising is stealing from sources and filing off the serial numbers. I do like how you pointed out how the cast is now policing themselves on course correcting mistakes. It isn't a home game anymore. Such as asking for inspiration. There is also the fact that when they arrived on scene, it was Lord Briarwood, not Lady Briarwood, who was standing near the "dead" body of her twin brother. Also, since Percy took the first shot, she could see the wounds starting to heal themselves, which may explain the use of Holy arrows. Laura's mind works so quickly and she portrayed that in Vex so often, all that could have gone through Vex's mind that quickly. We don't really know for sure, but that's how I add it to the reality of the situation, instead of thinking of it as meta gamey.

    This is still one of my favourite CR episodes overall, but one moment I remember getting a lot of praise from the community was Keyleth dropping her Antilife Shell in shock after witnessing Percy's brutal kill. Tactically, this makes no sense and is an incredibly bad move. And people applauded her for it, since it takes a lot of guts to make a deliberately bad play in combat for the sake of role-playing. Marisha decided that Keyleth would be so horrified in that moment she'd drop concentration. Given this was a little into the "Marisha hate era" of the show (it seemed like when Orion left, the chat needed a "new target" and a lot of their ire transferred to her), it was nice to see one of her moments get this much positivity.

    • @SupergeekMike
      @SupergeekMike  Рік тому +3

      It helps that Liam specifically called it out as a moment where she chose RP over tactics and approved of it. I suspect some (though CERTAINLY not all) of the Marisha hate comes from people misinterpreting similar moments and assuming she was just bad at D&D, so having someone understand what she was going for and actively describe it on-camera probably helped a lot to blunt any negative reaction.

    • @BigKlingy

      @@SupergeekMike I haven't seen the second half of the episode in a while. That'd make sense.
      I noticed that it wasn't until Campaign 2 started and people saw Marisha as Beau that the Keyleth hate started fading. I guess once they saw her play such a different character, they realized a lot of the things they disliked about Keyleth were deliberate character flaws rather than bad acting or playing.
      That's the thing with CR's cast: they're such good actors that it's sometimes hard to tell they're ACTING. Even the players are fooled sometimes, like how it took until Campaign 1's final battle for them to realize Scanlan had low Wisdom and that's why he, in Sam's own words, "made terrible decisions all the time."

    I remember watching this episodes live and thinking that Liam was problematic with the drama as Orion was with the metagaming. He really takes over the spotlight and it disrupts the flow of the game.
    I felt this way a few other times while watching across 3 campaigns. In retrospect, it really brings the internal space of the character to life and sets a precedent, though it really feels shoe-horned to me.
    I think, also, that by not having the original intro sequences with the backstories in the UA-cam videos does a disservice to understanding how the players viewed their characters prior to the first episode.

    The clip at 3:31 is excellent for showing new DMs and players that thry dont *need* fancy items for playing.
    Matt has a dry erase map, and minis. Thats it. Thats all any group needs, and sometimes not even then if theyre more theater of the mind.

    Asking for a blessing for the Decanter of Endless Water is a huge power gaming move.
    I've been apologetic of Tiberius's behavior, since a lot of criticism can be said of the rest of the party. Like the old woman death you bring up.
    But stacking additional effects on magic items is just asking for an imbalance in how the game functions. It was probably spur of the moment, since the party was visiting the temple anyway, but Matt thankfully didn't fully commit to the upgrade. Despite the end product being on par with Very Rare items in this arc of the campaign.
    I do like the idea of magic items that can experience growth, but it needs sacrifice. Gold costs are largely irrelevant to the party at this point in time. Even if the clergy asked for a sizable donation to perform this mixture of Divine and Arcane magic it wouldn't have been a hindrance to anyone but Laura.

You r videos are incredibly well structured and yet you manage to keep a natural tone while conveying your ideas. It's a fine line to walk between structure, quality, concision and flow, and you manage it better than most DnD youtubers I know. Here's to hundreds more !

    If you have a chance to take a look, "Level Up: 5E Advanced" has a really cool standard mechanic for how to use inspiration. It gets tied to a "destiny" feature you choose, so whenever your roleplay harkens to that feature, you get inspiration. If you achieve your "destiny" you get a new way to get inspiration.
    It's a mechanic designed to get you to follow a character growth arch that you choose at the start to show what your overall story hopes are. It even has one where you aren't sure and can pick a different destiny later!

    while you are correct about how finger of death *should* work. as you say, i don't think thats how Matt was planning to run it. its a pretty common misconception in 5e that that is how FoD works. And later, when she again casts it on Vex (in the ziggaraut fight) its heavily implied that he intends to have it transform anyone that is reduced to 0 HP.

    Regarding Inspiration: The only way I've ever felt happy with it is - Any player can give any other player inspiration for any reason that makes sense to them. I've never had it abused and my players seem happy. Some things that people get inspiration for:
    -One player makes write ups every game that recaps the session in story form, another player gives them inspiration for the next game
    -A player makes a super fitting in-character joke at an incredibly tensemoment.
    -A player had the best and totally unexpected idea that completely removes an intense threat without anyone else having to worry about it.

    With all the “Tiberius killed and old woman” drama I was expecting her to be a simple NPC. Watching this episode I didn’t even realise this was the point all the drama was about. Vex even shoots an arrow at her that misses as she is running away. Tiberius is justified as far as I see it, but I haven’t watched the next episode yet 🤷‍♀️

  • @quantumraptor1485

    I definitely feel the killing of the old woman itself was gruesome(saw blade on a sleeping lady), but the reprocussions of it was blown a bit out of proportion in game. It feels like they received some community backlash about killing “innocents” and Matt decided to take it seriously. The next episode is also a good lesson to counteract this.

    It does look like he glanced at a specific spot right after telling Marisha to make a roll, that's what he and many DMs are great at, the cast is either looking down or at Marisha as she rolls, that's exactly when Mercer looks to the bottom right. before he has an answer for her, it looks like he glanced at the name to tell her if she rolled high enough on the DC. Taliesin says he didn't look down cus Matt deflected their attention(probably on accident) and noone saw that he might have. A good trick i use is a side list of names that could be used in a few different scenarios and quickly scanning across and picking any of those names, then giving the description of what it is, the name is arbitrary until it's said. And it's how you freak out your players XD
