The Great Barrier Reef is a new construction geologically speaking. Just 15000 years ago with sea level 120m lower this would be dry land. The modern Coral developed about 200 million years ago when temperatures and CO2 were much higher .
Earth is in an Ice Age right now and has been for the last 2.6 million years. If we look at the last 200 million years those recent 2.6 have been the coldest including today.

Earth is in an interglacial but still in the Ice Age. 130 000 years ago during the Eemian interglacial hippos swam the river we today call the Thames .
Earth's declining magnetic field strength and a more active sun are the main reason for the warming.

The author was a founder of Greenpeace but left when the political activism got bigger than its environmental work. There is a whole chapter on the Reef, and it echoes what your commentator is saying - the reef is thriving! (along with polar bears and the fact that CO2 is vital to all life on earth!). He confirms again what you are saying, these climate alarms are all something we, as normal people, cannot directly check or verify. More of these Geoff.

Things had barely changed including no island had disappeared under water, nothing had been ruined, yet a local guy took us out one evening on a boat and pointed out a few small trees on the waters edge of one island that had died and fallen over, as they always have done, and tried to use that one small thing to convince us that the water level was rising (on that one island) Crazy, but very sad because i could tell he'd been brainwashed by the media in order to pass that "information" on to his customers. Sadly, first time visitors might believe it, if they don't bother to think too deeply..

      Agreed. Ish.
Currently "floating" ice melting would not alter sea levels (though it would alter the salinity and therefore the density and thermal capacity of the oceans) however, much of the planet's current ice fields are on land. If this ice melts then the sea levels will rise...
Regardless, the planet's weather and ecosystems will continue their cycles regardless of the current existence of the human animal.

Geoff, I first dived the reef 50 years ago off Salamaua in PNG, the last time dived it was 3 months ago off Cairns.
Dived it many times in between.
It was beautiful then, still beautiful now, the variety of coral, fish, sponges, shell fish etc. is simply mind blowing.

Early 90's I was in the Maldives on a fairly remote Island, massive currents, equatorial heat, fantastic corals/sea life, next trip, another more commercial island, offshore reef was bleached, island corals pristine, Sipadan end of 90's watching green turtles push divers out of the way to feed on acres of stag horn coral, wrecking it in the process, it was then we found out that we were only one resort out of five on the island, [we were sold the trip on a limit of 80 divers only, 50 logged dives minimum, at any one time] 5x80+staff! because money was to be made. when it was sufficiently damaged, the money men made it a marine park, and charged a fee, removed the resorts to the surrounding islands, and used twin-engined high speed boats to ferry huge numbers of permitted divers, all at extra cost, I visited about a decade ago, and it was a rollercoaster of boats, and divers, Reefs were doing ok. The goose was making tons of money. I dived all over the outlying islands there, you heard the fishing bombs all the time, but despite that the corals/sealife comes back. Its worth mentioning that the Roman sea baths in Malta , are still, after 2000 years filling up, and emptying, no more/less flooded than they were. My tuppence worth.

Cave divers have found cave drawings in a cavern on the French coast where the only cave entrance is 37m below current sea level. Estimated to have been done some 27,000 years ago, the sea level must have been at least 37m lower in those days. The rise since then hasn't been caused by the car.

When I was in the Florida Keys last year I found it fascinating that one thing they asked us to do on a guided tour was not use suncream we'd bought with us when snorkeling and only use their provided 'Coral safe' natural sun cream. Apparently the chemical run off from most suncreams kills coral. I suspect that not many people are aware of this, are going out on private boats or from shore and using chemical suncream killing corals, 2 years of lockdowns etc and it regenerates because people weren't going on holiday, just a theory mind.

Remember the government holding a cabinet meeting underwater, while wearing scuba gear?
Those islands are rising vs sea level, not sinking.
And also since that stunt for the TV gullible, they’ve added six new airstrips to accommodate their ever increasing tourist numbers.

There is a current runing from North to south. Hence the water exiting from rivers turns south and sort of hugs the coast. Despite this, farmers have fertiliser and run-off controls placed on them because they are "harming the reef". No such controls on the destruction for building wind farms.

Some of the Barrier Reef islands and reefs were used for target practice in WW2 and largely destroyed. Today they have fully recovered.
My wifes family is from a small island in Thailand and the reefs there go through cycles of dying off and regrowing jn different areas. Coral is very resilient.

My understanding of coral based on what I read in Dr Patrick Moore´s most recent book ( a founder of Greenpeace and its former Scientific advisor)is that it is ( if I remeber correctly) purely calcium carbonate drawn from carbon dioxide absorbed into the sea. The colour is provided by different varieties of krill who inhabit the inside of the stems. if there are changes in the composition of the water the krill will evacuate the coral to find a friendlier location. This, I understand is bleaching but the coral is not dying. Please correct me if I have got this wrong. It is some time since I read the book..

In the early days of keeping marine fish, dead coral was used in the aquarium and would get green with algae. The coral would be removed from the tank and cleaned by literally "bleaching" it white. So, chemical run-off does seem to be a likely culprit, or at least a contributing factor.

People are slowly waking up to the decades of climate propaganda with the reef ...however my immediate concern is what may happen with out of control native title (NT) overeach in QLD and how the gov may forcibly use NT to introduce restrictive (or costly) access controls to the reef for all of those users who aren't aboriginal?
