I grew up fishing and didn’t really keep interested. Fast forward 15 years when I met my wife’s grandfather he taught me how to fly fish. It’s unlocked a passion for something I would have never expected. The challenge and art, sometimes I’m not casting for fish. It’s a therapeutic rhythm of technique chasing perfection that I’m after. Her grandfather has since passed and we spread his ashes along the White River in Arkansas. We fished a many day there. Something I will hold close to my heart as long as I live.
After going to MT for 30 years, I have probably have made my last trip, as age has arrived. At least I got to take my grandson. about 10 years ago, a friend who lives in Bozeman took me to that spot on the Gallatin (the movie was filmed on the Gallatin River) and I stood on that big rock and shadow cast for a while. The only issue was that across the river, atop the ridge, there are now 2 houses.
In the late 1990's I had a guide service in southern Utah called "Shadow Casters". It sounds cool, and people believed the idea theoretically possible, thanks to the movie; at least until they started casting. There are plenty of good quotes throughout the book & movie, but I've always thought the Macleans closing paragraph about the basement of time, and being "haunted by waters" will probably stand as the definitive statement on fly fishing and life, for time and all eternity. I know more than a few anglers that had it tattooed on themselves.

"My brother had become an artist ." That line always stuck with me.
