This video takes me back. I was a member of this Regiment 1RNZIR, 6Pl B Coy. during 1961 to 1964, based at Terendak Garrison Malacca Malaysia. I was honoured to be selected to serve on the household guard of the General, Far East Land Forces at Flagstaff House Singapore. I'm pushing 80 now, and still miss all my Regimental brothers. Onward.
Loved Dieppe Barracks and the local village life. Life was so carefree back in the 70's and money burned a hole in the pocket. The Barracks changed over the years, but Sunnys Tailor and Yaps Shoes were still there I noticed. And the guardhouse of course. Would love to revisit those times, but oh well, never mind. Onward!
Cool vid. About 11 years after my tour as a truckie. I wonder if 'Buff Order' would be allowed today. Probably have the Health & Safety Officer screaming "Cover up! Put a bloody shirt on!"hahaha
This is a video done by JMF Kingi, a collection of shots back in 1988 - 89. The final years of the Battalion in Singapore. The haka was the final rugby match between us & Navy, was an orsum game, always the toughest matches played when another Kiwi team comes to Singa's. Slick drill as always....now that I'm in the Aust Green Machine....that Kiwi drill by B-Coy boys on midday punishment double-time 20 min quick-time kicks ass.
Just to Clarify this video clip. I got the DVD copy from a guy in Perth about 2009. I burnt a copy for me and a couple of brothers. The original was filmed by my old Corp training Sgt Ron Apiti. Tried to get a good copy. That film was put on FB in 2019. I did a cut version in 2013 as a group of us were going to Vietnam to mark ANZAC 100 years in 2015. We done ANZAC day in Singapore. I had brought a $2 Cassette of Lee Oskar and played it at the Ship Cabin 1982. Richie the bar owner just kept playing is. The song was released in 1978 Will be playing it at 2/1 RNZIR- 50 years of service to NZ in Perth 2024 That’s 44 years ago I first heard this song. Please enjoy the song. I was RNZAF based at NZ Force HQ from 81-83 and lived at Dieppe Barracks. Initially on the top floor of the first barracks on the right as you came in thru the gate. If we weren't getting hammered at the strip, Fernleaf or town somewhere we would be hungover at Dieppe. Used to take the piss out of the guys on Confined to Camp, who would have to parade in the small yard behind us and to the side of the guardhouse. Many a time coming back pissed thru the gate at 2-3 in the morning, still in uniform (or horror, not in long sox) and being told by a L/Cpl to halt (we were corporals) and they were politely told where to go. Driven back from Ma's at all hours by the MP's, still in uniform. The mess used to put up some good food. Brilliant time over there. Thanks for the memory
monrad1971 i remember ,there is big guy, called TINY , gentle as a teddy bear , soft spoken , use to hang around the club call RAINBOW, and when they amercian army came to the club, THE WHOLE CLUB WERE CRASH.big fight that night! do u remember
They were good times especially in alpha coy as we had won the last skill at arms for the top section 3sect 3platoon 1st and 1 sect 3 platoon 3rd for the Battalion. But the brothers, there are no words to describe them, simply family. Your Father was one of us.
Dieppe Barracks has not closed. It is now the home of the 21st Division of the Singapore Armed Forces. 21. There is a road connecting Dieppe to Sembawang Air Base and on the other side was Kangaw Barracks. This whole complex was the home of the ANZUK force. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/ANZUK
In the early 80s, I was a schoolboy camping on Tekong. We could see NZ soldiers training, they were melting under the sun! Thanks being here during a time of need.
Interesting video. I dont really know much about our presence in Singapore, but it looks like it was a pretty cool place to be for 'our boys in uniform'. And good to see the guys looking average, and not all ripped and jacked like some roid freak
