how is that comment older than the video?
It may be that the video was uploaded a while a go, but made public just now.... Just guessing :D
@@krismeyer2319 yeah......
Thank you ❤🪴🌱🌿
I understand Mrs Sheffields camera shyness, it is what is holding me back from starting a UA-cam channel. I really like my anonymity
your plants probably don't hate you, they're just jealous of how much you feature the bin
Or worried 😂

😂😂😂😂 Australia 🇦🇺
This comment made me laugh. 😂
😂😂😂😂😂 so true!
I've named my snake plant Mr Sheffield, because it's my favorite plant just like you are my favorite plant parent and have taught me so much!
Legend!
😊
I didn’t realize you were doing UA-cam as your full time gig. That’s terrific 😀🇨🇦
Thank you 😊
Thanks for the honest input that you’re not an expert, but an enthusiast. Humility and a bit of self-deprication speaks volumes! Love your channel!!!
Thank you 😊
The Thai Constellations are coming down in price. I saw pretty nice ones at a nursery for 45.00 US. But then right up the road they were asking 130.00. I live in Pennsylvania.
Loved this video, how you use your talent for throwing in a joke or two, reminding me that it should be fun to plant, even when trouble strikes a leaf or two. thankyou to Mrs. Sheffield for sharing you with us lol
Much appreciated!
Whenever I see the melanochrysum, I have your voice in my ear, calling her melanochrisis. I will trust you and avoid this plant forever :D
😂 It is lovely though
How great is to have a Q&A video of my favorite plant UA-camr?😃 Thank you for letting us know a little bit more about you Richard!😊
Glad you enjoyed it!
Admittedly my Thai Constellation is a baby with only four leaves and a new leaf developing, but it was only $40 (I am in the US). It was definitely a wishlist plant.
Great to get to know a bit more about you and the other Sheffields. Thank you.
I knew you’d say Mrs Sheffield compares to a Peace Lily. Good man! 😉
😁
@@SheffieldMadePlants Nek minnit "you can keep that old peace lily"
Wow. So much fun to hear all the questions and answers. Sweet that you think your wife would be the peace lily. The plant you bought together and are sentimental about. 😊
Thanks!
I was thinking of a question like “Have you ever thought about knocking off a plant because you coveted its pot?”
I rescued a plant from an antique store because I wanted the vintage pot. There was no natural light in there and I felt bad for it. Two years later, I have the pot and the plant (dracaena marginata) has grown 2 feet.
@@alisonh2112 😮
Great video Mr Sheffield! Would be great idea to show us your outdoor garden plants and herbs 😊 ideally with Mrs Sheffield running commentary so we know she actually exists 😅
😅
I love the bin clips because it’s always funny and I completely understand the sentiment! It’s ok to only see a fleeting sleeve of the Mrs! A bit of mystery
😁
Ooh that “little snake plant” on Princess’s windowsill is the rather rare Sansiviera/Dracena ‘Coppertone’. I got one slightly larger when a local nursery closed their “rare” plant room…it’s really lovely but is a very slow grower. Lucky girl! 🌱
Yes super slow!
Mine has not grown much in the last 2 years but brought 4 little babies since, much loved family members of my household. 🐍
OMG! Did he just say ‘most people aren’t that interested in houseplants……!!! That’s crazy.
My local grocery store had Thai Constellation plants on sale for 3 small plants for 60.00. You had to buy the 3 to get that price. That is the most money I have spent on a plant so I check them everyday. So far so good but I've only had them for 2 weeks.
Not too bad 👍
Thank you for doing the Q&A video; I really enjoyed it 😄
Thanks for watching 😁
I always have fungus gnats going up my nose! They must come from outside. I'm convinced. Not a huge problem but they never go away completely. Bug zapper in the bedroom sounds really appealing to me.
It's made a difference
For African violets I would recommend browsing an online shop to see if anything catches your eye. There are so many different colors and patterns available that something is bound to interest you. Not familiar with any UK shops though. I assume international shipping is not a viable option with shipping costs and phytosanitary documents and all that frustration.
Spraying the leaves of my philodendron seems to help a lot
My plants love me because of you!
you've probably seen many cyclamen at the stores (very often on offer here in northern germany) but maybe not looked at the foliage closely enough? they're my absolute favourite for having just as pretty green foliage as they have blooms (the veiny patterns, shiny or velvety textures and both heart shaped AND thoothy edged leaves! the dainty necks of those blossoms are so precious too, and watching them unfurl is very exiting! mine are also very hardy, haven't lost any of them despite several prolonged diseases! and i started propagation from seed recently, which is really easy when you do minimal research first. they're just the perfect houseplant imo.
I'll look out for them 👍
@@SheffieldMadePlants oh and i forgot to mention: some breeds (the ones with darker blossoms i think) get very pretty pink hues on the stems and underside of foliage 😊
I was able to solve the gnats problem by using Mosquito Dunks by Summit. I purchased it at Home Depot ir Lowes in Miami Florida USA. It may be in the UK or Amazon.
I was trying to get rid of mosquitoes in my rain barrels by dropping a 1/4 of the dunks and it miraculously got rid of not only the mosquitoes and their larvae but the gnats in my houseplants because I use the rain barrel water on them. I wick water African Violets too and no more gnats flying around or mosquito larvae in the water cups. It really works.
I follow and love your channel.
Thanks!

Philodendron is also my favorite, someone told me to put about 2 ml vinegar in liter of tap water and it works for me!
Interesting. What does it do?
@@SheffieldMadePlants it keeps it alive! When I started with philodendron with just plain tap water, it sort of yellows and melts away. I checked the pH of water I was using and was above 7. I guess philodendron doesn't thrive in that water.
Thoroughly enjoyed this video. Good insight on your journey. 👍🏼👍🏼🫶🏼
Glad you enjoyed it!
11:00 is a funny question. In the USA we have some British shows. One of my favorite shows was chef and blue shield and red dwarf (I think I have seen that whole show). The Thai con in the USA has really dropped in price. I have started seeing them for 45-75$ usd
I love Red Dwarf
Your UA-cam channel is great. Good content. Your love of plants is evident. Have a great weekend 😌.Plant 🌵 power to all the plant lovers.
Thank you 😊
@@SheffieldMadePlants gotta , give credit where credit is due. 🙋😊
Use a hot cloth and wipe it around the leaf you want to unfurl. Works like a charm for stuck leaves. Just hot tap water.
Thanks for the tip
Thanks for making this channel, it keeps me inspired.
You bet!
I killed my trailing philodendron, it was doing so well for years and then the plant started to decline due to the soil getting old and compacted so I changed it with new fresh compost and the whole plant died afterwards.
I recently started using neem oil for fungus gnats and other plagues and it seems to work just fine so far. Im also starting to use your advice of water from the bottom instead of the top of the pot and I think that helps a lot too
For fungus gnats I chop the dunks into quarters & add a new one every week to my 2 litre water jug (old milk bottle) and use this every time for watering, plants don’t mind & not had a gnat in over a year!!
Great video ✊️
Cheers!
You have the nicest smile sir!!
Thank you 😊
Spotted a Thai Constellation at the weekend in my local garden centre. Price tag was about 75 bucks. Too hefty still for me.
I've managed to get rid of gnats with neem oil. But make sure you buy one with emulsifier or buy emulsifier yourself, I've tried using soap and it didn't really work. When I finally bought one that can easily mix with water it took me 2 waterings to get rid of them and I've been free of them for couple of months. Unfortunately neem oil smells terrible when it's diluted and drying off.
Thanks! Truly enjoyed as usual! Happy Days!
Thanks for watching 😁
Thanks for telling us all about you Mr Sheffield Very good video And I love the bin!!! 😂
I really love your channel and your love of some of the more common plants. I did spend quite a hefty sum 3 years ago on a Monstera Albo and I realized that the common, cheap-y plants make me just as happy as a $300 one leaf node!! I have never spent that much again on any plant. Instead, I buy the affordable ones and really make an effort to make them happy and in turn I am happy because I am able to grow something beautiful! Here in the US we have a product called Capt Jack's Dead Bug Brew. Not sure if you can get it in the UK, but I am sure you must have something close to it. I used to spray the top layer of soil around my plant and it significantly reduced the number of gnats I had. Give that idea a go and see if it gets any better. Because of your channel I have ordered for my self a Calathea Elgergrass ( in the US it is a Rufibarba) and a a Calathea Warscewiczii. I am waiting for them to arrive. Enjoyed the video and love your channel, Thanks for everything!
Thanks. Not heard of that one
You’ve given us so many great tips, like water softener and moisture meters. I enjoyed the video. Thanks.
Glad it was helpful!
Such a great video! Love your humor! I use my watering meter all the time. I bought one for me and one for my daughter after you suggesting it. You are the plant guy and hope your wife can join you too and be the plant couple.
Thanks!
That was great fun to watch. Thank you Mistuh Sheffield 🥰👍✌️😘
Thanks!
I have 4 Monstera Deliciosa (2 are big), three Thai cons, 2 Albo and a Monstera Deliciosa Aurea :).
The Aurea was my dearest baby plant. Just a little smaller than a soft drink can and it was $150 AUD. ❤
Most are in Leca :)
Thanks for sharing!!
Loved the Q&A and your honesty when answering them. Your channel is more about common sense and some levity, while trying to keep the plants that we have thriving and not the ‘ in ‘ plant. I’m guilty I having several rare plants, but your insights into helping them thrive are 🙌, plus you are very funny and personable. My husband and I also have 4 year economic degrees for accounting. I like finance more and he thrives in the Information Technology industry for a major bank here in the US. Love your channel and 👋to Mrs Sheffield.
Cool thanks for sharing
Fungus gnats come with fresh fruit. I'm convinced of it. They get into your plant soil and hatch out when you water them. The only thing that got rid of mine was systemic pesticide. I'd say there's a D in fridge because it comes from frigid and probably the Frigidaire refrigerator 😅
Like it!
My carnivorous Nepenthes and especially the Drosera capensis have gotten rid of mine! 🪴
They come in compost. All compost based soil will have the eggs in due to how it's processed

Well, I have to say that I'm quite happy I found your channel. And I'm sure you will get the ytube gold award soon.
In the distant future maybe 😁
@@SheffieldMadePlants you'll get it!👍🤗
19:50 - Thai Constellation Monstera - if you don't have one yet and you want one, their prices should be going down soon. USA is now having them available at big box stores/retailers such as Walmart and Kroger (supermarket chain?) for just $30 USD. I am not sure how the situation with them is in the UK but I imagine it's only a matter of time before their prices go down and they are more widely available & affordable as well.
Thanks for the info
Love it! Very entertaining while transplanting too many seedlings.(never again!) 😂
I buy almost all of my plants online, & I have a habit of buying rare tropical plants that are $$$. I have never spent over $100 on a plant, but pretty close. I just love these beautiful, delicate plants!
I have a few Philos that get stuck leaves. What seems to work is to spray them and put a resealable bag over it. (So you guys have Ziploc bags in the UK?) Usually, the leaf will get "unstuck" within 24 hours, sometimes faster than that. Oh! I also want to say that I love your bin 😂 It should be in your Amazon store!
That's a great idea!
Just in time for lunch!
Thanks for the video :D

As for the Birkin: I treat it as a succulent almost. I only water it when the leaves get softer. Otherwise I find that it can get mushy. Maybe that could help?
And: I never got to thank you for the tip on the moisture meter. I got it last year and I still love it. ❤
My pleasure 😊
thank you for your videos they bring a smile to my face!

For leaved that won’t unfurl! Try gently wrapping them in a towel/paper towel (scaled to the leaf size) that’s slightly warm and pretty moist. Only keep it on for a second (it’s a plant, not a hot-towel shave) and over a couple days it will open, sometimes straight away! Works for me!
I have identified with your logic for quite a while now! Just when I have a question or concern, you have created something to pop up on my feed. I love that! I have over 100 viable healthy plants, nothing expensive or exotic. I wanted a manageable jungle and have accomplished it with a lot of thanks to you. I don’t propagate much as i like a variety unless I am growing one as a gift.I have picked up plants to then find out that my environment isn’t what they need or more maintenance than I am willing to give. I really appreciate your info and different experiments to help guide me along the way. This has been an invaluable channel for my jungle, and I really appreciate you!
Thank you 😊
I have 100+ plants (scared to count how many exactly, my in-law can do that next time he visits, he did it last time because he didn't belive me that it´s just 80. I don´t coun´t propagations)
My 5 year old has a golde pothos for about 6 month it was a cutting of my big mama that I wanted to take to a plant swap , she is suuuuper happy about every new leaf. 2 weeks ago she came home from a friends place with two teracotta pots because she want´s more plants :D
I´m so proud. I had just gotten a small sansiveria cylindrica so we planted it in one of the pots, I warned her that it wont grow as fast as the other one. Now I feel like I have to find another succulent for the other pot that grows faster to give her a rewarding experience. I also had to explain to her what plant food is, she looked confused about the explanation, but happy with the answer that I make sure her plants also get some.
Great stuff 👍

(MARANTA YELLOW LEAVES) If a normally happy prayer plant starts getting yellow leaves one after another, and it’s not getting better with distilled water, I have recently discovered it likely has to do with a cool draft! I like to leave my window cracked at the top & I had my two different HUGE (lemon lime & classic “green”) marantas in hanging pots.. while they’re gloriously happy w/air flow when it’s warmer…. One started yellowing leaf by leaf until I couldn’t save it… the other one was fine and I ended up shifting it near the cracked window and lo & behold… leaves started yellowing… I was devastated.. eventually I realized the leaves turning yellow were all at the same height as the window crack.. I moved the plant and the leaves stopped yellowing.
Hmm interesting and makes sense 👍
I agree with you about expensive plants. I can't bring myself to pay a lot of money for a few leaves. Besides, I have found that larger plants tend to do better than small ones. I have never paid more than $35 for a plant. The ones that were $35...Mr and Mrs Snake...Miss Lily (peace lily sensation) and some agleonema that I don't know the type...they all looked a few years old when I got them. I never buy anything smaller than a 6" pot. That being said...I can do that because I am not buying expensive plants. At the end of the day...I just want all of my plants to be the healthiest they can. If that means having basic, easy plants..so be it. My plants might not be the fanciest types..but they are Planterina-size...including my Birkin!!! (RIP Planterina...please come back Amanda!!!)
Not that you asked...but I am an Endeavour and Vera girl!
Fair enough 👍

Hi Mr. Sheffield!
I love your videos so much. Thank you for the hard work that you do making your content. Can I give you an idea to try to conquer the fungus gnats? I use sand as soil dressing on all plants other than succulents. I was growing vegetables in my house through the winter and had an issue with gnats until I covered my entire growing area with sand. No gnats at all and I was growing directly in compost/raised bed soil and watering often. Take care and happy growing season and summer! 🌞
