    The level wind on a Rover 70 has caught big AJ's, Red snapper and red grouper the past 3 yrs with zero problems. If you like a level wind... keep it on a Rover. They're tough. They're Not like other LW reels.

    Does the level-wind disengage when in free-spool? I don’t see the need to do this if it’s synced. Especially with metal line guides. My old Okuma CLX has synchronized-wind and it held up just fine in deep sea because the line was never too far off the guide to put enough pressure to break it.

    • @CattermanAdventures
      @CattermanAdventures  2 роки тому +2

      It probably would be good with that. Could also look into some stout surf rods, or 7'6" MH/H rods.
      These reels do fine in both so long as you wash them off after every salt use. Also, be careful of getting any sand into the levelwind if you choose to keep it on and bring it to the ocean.

    @3:36 no clue why anyone would complain about it. Sure its not gonna have a free spinning spool and high end braking and so on. But its a 50 dollar reel, not a damn 500+ USD Shimano bait caster.

    It's better that way but the guys at Kastking really don't get it. The cage is still riveted and inadequate.
    It needs to be a solid one piece cage with the foot part of the one piece.
    Also there is no under the rod secondary clamp to handle extreme pressures that most rod reel seats can't handle.
    I have seen way to many reels detach themselves from the rod under the pressure of a real beast 7 or 8 feet long and 500 lbs weight.

    • @CattermanAdventures
      @CattermanAdventures  5 років тому +1

      Wow Gary. That's quite a statement. I'm sorry to hear that you've had such a negative experience with the brand.
      Your situation is quite the rarity. In regards to the Rover, I'm curious as to how you landed on that conclusion. How did you test the drag, are you using mono type line or braid? are you using backing? Have you tried backing off the drag, then tightening it all the way down till your fingers hurt and then releasing a little?
      Let me know. 👌😉

    • @garymarch4711
      @garymarch4711 5 років тому

      @@CattermanAdventures Yeah, I'm pretty fed up with KastKing. I had reasonable/ modest expectations given what they cost, but they aren't even performing basic functions without failing. I have/ had dozens of other baitcasting and conventional reels. I've spooled them with anything from fluorocarbon to mono to braid. I spool them all right and catch plenty of larger fish on my non KastKing reels. These past two defective Rover reels have had about 70 yards of 10lb backing and about 110 yards of 80lb braid. No real reason for that ratio. I didn't initially measure what was going on.
      I use an accurate and calibrated fish scale to measure a straight line pull of the the drag. To make sure that I'm doing things right, I used the same method to measure the max drag of a couple other lower drag powered reels... namely a Lew's and Bass Pro reel. They were rated for 10lbs and the drag didn't break until around 10.5 to 11.5ish. They were breaking drag within spec. The Rovers aren't even close.
      Here's a private video that I sent to Kastking on the second batch of defective reels. ua-cam.com/video/XUwgcKkWeCQ/v-deo.html Heres one I sent Kastking on the first defective Rover reel. ua-cam.com/video/Z5ahZ8IEJtw/v-deo.html The first reel came from Ali Express (China direct). The second reel came from Kastking here in the states... fulfilled by Amazon. I can't get any more than about 6lbs of drag out of these. It's too bad. I have no idea why. I asked KK to check out the first one and respond back what was wrong. They just sent a replacement reel and didn't reply/ ignored my inquiries (Poor customer service).
      I want them to work as I like the ergonomics and looks of these reels. I have no idea what the problem is with the Rover's drag system. I suspect something isn't being done right at the factory. I mean to have 2 of them fall away short of specs?? Something is wrong.
      I've also had issues with the Spartacus Plus reels. See the second half of the first video. Once again, I have/ had dozens of other reels, namely Abu, Lew's, Daiwa, Shimano, etc.. No issues. I figured I'd give KK a try this summer... Every KK reel I've received has been defective. I'll be clear... I have had modest expectations... Not being too fussy.
      Anyway, I'm waiting for KK to get back to me with a resolution. I just want working reels... even if they aren't the smoothest, etc..

      @@CattermanAdventures I'm sure they're good people. But, I'll be the first to warn others that There's some issues there. Far from good. They frankly ignore 50% of what you tell them in emails and on forms. I "highlighted" (Bright yellow) important text or simple requests on the return forms. They were ignored. I've had to repeatedly reach out. I finally had to point blank tell them that they're "not reading/ ignoring my messages". No apologies... just forwarded my message to somebody telling them to address my questions. I tried calling twice and always get voicemail. Based on my experiences, I bet It'll be another couple days before I see any responses and resolutions. Frankly, I gave up and just ordered another Abu 6601. If they finally get it right, I guess I'll have a backup reel. Thanks

      @@garymarch4711 I agree! I'm sending mine back and spending the big money on quality Abu 7000s. I'll pay more for something that actually works as intended.
