Comment from user name "76561197965397657" on STEAM :
Quote> John Carmack and id Software knew what they were doing when they released the source code for Quake in 1999. They knew what they were doing when they chose to write all of the Quake code in-house rather than relying on proprietary third party libraries to create Quake. John commented on the problems using a paid proprietary sound engine for Doom caused them in the long run and it was one of the reasons why their future engines strove to be a self-reliant as possible thus resulting in some of the most easily portable engines ever created. The new Nightdive version of the game is a disaster and an affront to everything Quake stood for.
The approach would make perfect sense for console releases given they will always be inherently proprietary and closed walled, however there was no reason for the PC release to be like this. One of the things talked about extensively on the release stream was the fact that Quake was so important because of its modability and inevitable open source nature; how does this new project at all reflect either of those things? How does it reflect anything the Quake stood for or what made the game great in the first place? How are problems supposed to be fixed in this new version? Begging Nightdive to consider fixing them? What happens in five, ten, or fiften years from now when it no longer works on more modern hardware and operating systems? You beg?
Nothing about this new release for PC is good. It is an affront to everything that made Quake great and unendingly relevant.
      ^^' sorry !

Amazing job on the remaster! As someone who played competitive Quake for over a decade (mostly QW but some NQ initially), the addition of client-side prediction for movement was great and unexpected! No ice skating! The game was very playable on 100+ ping and I had a blast DM'ing, something I couldn't normally tolerate in OG NQ. The addition of modern features such as high refresh rate and frame rates are also greatly appreciated, Q1 on a 240hz monitor @ 500 fps is awesome. :) I would love to see what you guys could do if you were to reimagine Q1 in a modern engine such as the one used in Doom Eternal. I think you're right about the appetite for arena shooters starting to return. I think a proper Q1 remake could be hugely successful, similar to Doom.

I got the 25th anniversary on my switch remembering stories my father told me about the game. I used to play quake 3 arena in school but that's as much of the games I had experience befor recently. Picking up quake was one of the best things I've ever done. It re ignited a passion for gaming and first person shooters in me that I thought was long gone. Now I proudly play "boomer shooter" as my main form of gaming entertainment and it feels like I'm a kid again experiencing games for the very first time again. I might just be nostalgic for a time I was too young to experience but I can confidently say that today's generation yerns for quake and they didn't even know it.

I feel far to often developers feel local offline play isn't necessary, but the fact that because I can play this offline means during covid I can get some buddies together, set up the projector outside where there is no internet and frag the hell out of eachother.

The only problem I see is the forcing of multiplayer onto Bethesda's servers on the PC version instead of shipping with a dedi server client. Publishers need to stop fucking doing this. If the servers go down for whatever reason, the game MP is entirely dead in the water. If someone doesn't wanna sign up for an account for whatever reason, the MP is dead in the water. Not to mention how easy it is to cheat on publisher servers, whereas with player-hosted servers, the admins can inspect and kick your cheating ass immediately. And then there's the total lack of mod support.
Now, with all that said, the game still has the original versions, so that's good, but regardless, this is a disappointment in an otherwise very polished and stellar remaster.
