I animated my summary of Self-Reliance by Ralph Waldo Emerson. On top of my personal story of growing up pretty much on my own I share how to achieve Self-Reliance and how I set specific, measurable, achievable, relevant & time-bound (SMART) goals for myself.
    How to be Self-Reliant
    1. You assume responsibility.
    2. You inform yourself.
    3. You know where you're going.
You set S.M.A.R.T. goals & pursue them.
    4. You make your own decisions.
    How to set SMART goals
Specific: What exactly do you want to accomplish?
Measurable: How will you evaluate the extent to which the goal has been met?
Achievable: Is it even possible? Can you even reach your goal?
Relevant: Does it fit into the bigger picture? Meaning, does reaching your goal help you progress, get ahead with all your other objectives?
Time-bound: Basically, by when do you have to achieve your goals, with what frequency, in what time period?
    My 10 Principles on Self-Reliance
    1) The ulimate form of self-mastery lies in searching for answers on your own, relying on nothing external.
    2) You think for yourself rather than sheepishly accepting other people’s ideas.
    3) You value your individual experience over the knowledge gained from everything else.
    4) That’s why reading isn’t enough, you must apply what makes sense to you and learn from it first-hand.
    5) You value personal intuition, because you know, relying on general opinions, you would end up a frail, inept copy with no real self-worth.
    6) You know, the lack of conviction would not result in innovative ideas, but in accepting what you’ve been taught and identifying with it as a whole.
    7) In other words, you inevitably end up believing the nonsense of others. Their ignorance spreads over to you, if you don’t make up your own mind.
    8) Idealy you form your opinion on lots of research from reliable sources, sticking to facts, logic and persuasive arguments.
    9) You’re a unique, authentic individual who trusts his gut and understands the profound power of a built-in, bold and robust creative force.
    10) You understand that staying true to yourself, doing what you think is right, is a necessity for true happiness. You value authenticity and defend your stance in a world of mediocrity, in order to keep leading.

    1. Assume responsibility
    2. Be informed about your environment
    3. Know where you're going, think of your end goal and the steps that need to be taken
    4. Make your own decisions

When I see ppl boasting that they read a book a week, I think - did you really read it, if you didn’t take the time to reflect. I read 1 book a month, giving myself time to reflect and make plans for what I’ve learnt, and begin taking action

I can't believe how incredible blessed I am to have come across your videos... Most times it takes me forever to get through books because I'm pretty much ADD(all over the place). I consider myself more of a visual learner and can break down videos a lot quicker than I can process text. These videos are incredible and I appreciate you so much for taking the time and effort to create these. With the way I learn information, these videos are everything I've been looking for and needing.... thank you.

    ...
    Dear (soon-to-be) leaders,
I've been waiting to put this one out for months now. I could dive deeper into the tactics of the video, but that's what the video's for. I'd like to add to the somewhat vague, negative sentiment I expressed towards my "upbringing."
*You're either pushed out of your nest forcefully or you have to jump, while you can, on your own terms.* I realize some of you reading this have had a tough past, I would consider myself no stranger to hardships. It is difficult to see the good in it, when you're not out yet. Some experiences we've had, the ones we never talk about, have been traumatic & unjust, but please do not forget one important fact - *you* are still standing. You could've given up a long time ago. You have people surrounding you who complain all day about nothing, about problems you wish were yours. They would've never endured what you've been through. You've built up thick skin by pushing through that resistance you were forced onto by your environment, by things out of your control.
This is where we need to draw the line, when the common self-help advice pops up. "It's always your fault." Heck, I know I've said this myself... and I do believe in it. It's a helpful mindset. It makes you take responsibility & while others cowardly fingerpoint, you take action & do something about the situation like a true leader does instinctively, regardless whether or not it actually was your fault... but some of the horrible things that happen to real victims, the silent ones, in this world, are in no way the victim's fault. You'll hear me say "The world is upside down." a lot & this is one of the reasons.
Our society has allowed professional victims, the most priviledged, most advantaged & despicable parasites, to get on stage, cry in to the mic infront of millions of people for how bad they have it, fundraise hundreds of thousands of dollars for their cult... and oftentimes, they blame the real & innocent victims of crimes they themselves are committing, in which a massive, blinded crowd fueled by misdirected anger participates. I'm starting to feel my inner rage build up again. I cannot stand true injustice. It was my personal experiences in school, the office & overall life that made the 48 laws of power resonate with me so deeply that I wanted to create 60 videos on them.
I realize, some of you reading this need help, you need someone to reassure you of certain truths, someone you can borrow ideas from, someone who understands where you're coming from, because he's no different. I hope to be that person, even if it's just for one single individual among you, I'll feel like I've contributed to someone else's life in a meaningful way, which makes my life meaningful & my struggles worth the fight. What significance has my enduring all the pain if I don't help others in need like I would've wanted someone to help me, when I needed it the most.
That being said. When people get to know me & can't believe that I'm only 22 years old. When the girl I date demands to see my ID to check for herself, it is all thanks to self-reliance. It is, because no one ever helped me & thus I had to help myself in all matters of life, since I was about 10. Not only did I not get any support, I faced a lot of abuse to make things worse. I've been through hell & I wish I hadn't been, but wishful thinking doesn't change anything. I'm not proud of people underestimating me, because of my age. I understand that I'd be a complete softy if it had been the opposite. There's just so many immature losers among my peers that I stand out like a purple cow.
I want you to know that you are not alone & that others do care. We need to speak up, but the right way to go about it isn't safe-spaces, trigger warnings & refusing to grow the fuck up, but to face reality, to face your fears & to knock them out once and for all. You have everything you need in this lifetime at your disposal. It is just a matter of stepping up!
I wish you a great day full of clarity & a bright future full of fulfilled promises. List a handful of s.m.a.r.t. goals, assume responsibility, inform yourself, know where you're going & make your own decisions.
    Thank you all.
    - Nenad (illacertus)

The phrase, "Every time you choose safety, you reinforce fear," is this a quote in the book or your own? It's unbelievably powerful and explains a lot for people who avoid the very choices that can make one authentic and self-reliant.

    • @Illacertus
      @Illacertus  8 років тому +8

That's a phrase I constructed writing the script for Law 32 & have been using since. Most people rather go for comfort and familiarity, which gives them a feeling of safety. The more often you avoid taking risks and being courageous in life the more fearful and anxious you get. Before you know it you settle down for a mediocre life. It's a destructive cycle. Believing in your ability and judgement is necessary for true self-reliance.

I once read 70 books in one month. _It was all about quantity_ I have a few books I study constantly, dozens and dozens of times, with notes. I told everyone: "You will not be hearing from me in November, because I'm reading."

You're spot on with the speed-reading through a plethora of books thing! I listen to a lot of audiobooks on my iPod, all self-help/development, and philosophy. I used to play it on 1.5-2 x the speed and blast through them, looking for the deep dive beyond the surface-level information I already knew. Not only was it not helpful, but I would regularly get mad at myself when I caught my mind straying. I have since kept the speed to 1.25-1.5 x the speed, to allow myself to properly immerse into the content emotionally (which really helps with retention), being as curious as I can (instead of thinking "I know this already!"), and when I notice my mind wander, I pause the audio. I notice that because I allow my mind to fantasize and regurgitate what I just heard (sometimes contrasting it with similar info from other authors), I am properly integrating it into my memory. I sometimes skip back to an earlier part afterwards to listen to it again, and I feel I get something new from it. Then, months later, I will listen to the whole book again and reach a new level of understanding. With the base knowledge in place, I pick up on some of the more advanced concepts that I overlooked before, because how much can you possibly take in at one time?
I was raised, as you mentioned in the video, by very doting parents who were very overprotective of me, to the point they were choosing my friends (telling me I couldn't hang out with my friend who had green hair!), and I was nowhere near ready for the real world when I left home. I strongly believe that my former desire to blast through audiobooks, for example, is due to my conditioned behavior of an expectation, perhaps an entitlement, to instant gratification. I find it very hard to do anything boring or unpleasant. I'm attempting to transform my attitude through action, the power of presence, meditation, and lots of NLP.
I totally get you on the video games. I had to quit WoW in 2009 because I would spend 18h a day on my days off, farming and power leveling. 18 hours! I also had the Sims game, and I would come down on myself all the time as I was teaching my Sim family to cook, play guitar, get buff, and get job promotions - while I in real life was playing games all day and working a dead-end job, which I only worked so that I could play video games. Why wasn't I leveling MYSELF up? Oihhhh. So I quit WoW cold turkey... and get this... I still get withdrawal symptoms for that game! It's dangerous! I have come close to buying it again, THIS YEAR, and I haven't played it in almost a decade! What stopped me was I decided to go back to school to change careers and I couldn't afford it. Thank goodness I had that common sense. I'm determined never to buy such an immersive game again. Someone bought me Skyrim a few years back and I'm so afraid of it, it's still in the shrink wrap!

Amazing how love will corrupt a child as they are unable to process their reality feeling their entitled. There's a fine and dangerous line when it comes to leadership between accepting responsibility for another's failure as your own and merely creating entitlement through conflict avoidance.
Certain people do not possess the ability to be led, they are poison. Accepting responsibility for their failures is not leadership.

So glad to have found you! The old souls are wise and now I have found , finally , one that I can listen to. You are not the only purple cow out there, there is a sparse tribe of us but the Earth was salted (I believe purposely) with just a few so they will be recognized by those that see and those that need too. Your work is awesome ! Thank you for inspiring me to read again and take flight!

Agree 100%. These lessons are best learned on your own as you develop and you learn how to manage and regulate yourself without seeking external validation. As long as you believe in yourself, the determination and resilience you possess is all you need. External validation, pressure and opinions don't matter.

This blew my mind! I moved out of the nest across the country with only $300 without finishing college and supported myself financially with no help (well credit cards and loans). Fast forward 10 years and I am in a career, bought 3 cars, and just recently bought my own home. I never mind helping my friends and it is very rare that I ask for help....I am the youngest of 3 men and both of my older bros live close to my parents.

It's just very simple. Even if you are surrounded by people, you are alone. Only you can truly understand yourself. Only you can take charge of your life.
If you think you can depend on other people, you are screwed. If they like you and want to help you, then that's nice. But never depend on that.

Leaders, and I would suggest as important, are Team Builders.
Not everyone has the courage, brains, self-belief etc. to lead but they will need a team with the complete set of skills. Then you need those people who hold it all together. Who see the little signs and get something done before they become cracks. A good leader holds on to these people the tightest.
