Bowie was like “The Oracle of Delphi.” Totally before his time, Starman (that whole period) demanded “full disclosure”... and we’re just barely getting there now *almost half a century later!*
Early 70's Bowie music is absolutely amazing. He was a pioneer as a musician, with his unique style of music, and constantly changing his looks. He covered every subject within his many songs and albums. This genius was definitely a Starman from outer space and changed the landscape of creative sound with his music videos throughout his career.
The first time I heard hunky dory when it came out, I had smoked some good pot, and I thought, o.g he's better than the Beatles.

That album is always on lists of the best ever. "Moonage" Daydream is a mind blower.
But after hearing this I so badly wanted to hear that "Yippp" that starts "It Ain't Easy" No idea how many times I spun this one in it's entirety == a big number for sure.
With Bowie’s Vocals and Songwriting along with Mick Ronson on Piano & String Arraignment’s along with Ronson’s Other Worldly Guitar on Moonage Daydream and the entire Ziggy Stardust Album is Absolutely Amazing

Bowie is an incredibly diverse artist. So many different vibes, it takes a while and many songs to really appreciate his talent. Dig deep. My personal favorite decade for Bowie would be the 70's.

It may take people many songs, but when I got Ziggy in 79 or 80, he had made from Five Years on.
It is important to remember that The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars is a concept album and that as an artist David Bowie intended for this album to be listened to in one sitting from start to finish. The Entire album is a story. Bowie does this a a lot and his entire career should actually be seen as one piece of art.

A lot of early Bowie sons are story songs. He talks about other people in odd situations, and some folks can't get into that, they want to identify rather than listen. But those of us who love it? We love it a lot.

Lex is actually very on point with her intuitions. The words she chose to describe the song and why she chose them fits so well because the song is pretty much filled with those themes. The innocence and warmth would be the kids/teenagers listening to the radio in the song. They hear the starman sending a hopeful message to take care of the earth. The funky part is that Bowie artistry and sound.
She is SO into it… absolutely fantastic to watch. Awesome traction, well done, gang.
This is from a concept album. The album tells a story in which the world is doomed to environmental collapse within five years. The starman arrives on Earth to help us (this song). To effectively spread his message he becomes a rock and roll star. That lifestyle tears him apart.
Considering it was during the height of "The Cold War", environmentalism is a bit revisionist. Environmentally speaking, the big panic was the impending ice age.
@@andyfletcher3561 Not quite revisionism. Bowie spoke in contemporaneous interviews about the earth running out of natural resources, and the song refers the planet dying in 5 years. Could be a nuclear war or it could be some other cataclysm befalling the earth itself (although probably precipitated by humans even in that case). You have to also remember that pollution was a hot topic around this time, too..

Bowie is without a doubt, one of the most prolific singers/songwriters of the past 50 yrs. Nobody sounds like him, nobody can copy him. He's on his own level.
So, so fascinating to hear a contemporary person react to music some of us just simply grew up with & have become part of our being. And Lex, I just love how your mind's processing works, so interesting, and very clever & intuitive!

There has never been anybody like Bowie and there never will be again. I was so sad when he died and I love this song. I still can't hear it with getting teary eyed. Bowie is the Starman now. 😓
His legenday performance of this song on Top of the Pops in 1972 changed British culture and pop music forever.
If you are British and born in the 50-60's, you can probably remember where you were that Thursday evening 6th July 1972. It changed music and video.
“Spunk” is an interesting word to use, (especially if you’re British-Like Bowie.)
I am wonder if one of the reasons Lex is having such an oddly uncommon issue with David Bowie is that y’all are hoping around his catalogue too much.
In the way a band like Pink Floyd or The Mars Volta will have concept albums, David Bowie as eras of his discography that are conceptual-his personas:
Major Tom, Ziggy Stardust, Aladdin Sane, Halloween Jack, Thin White Duke, etc.
So maybe cluster songs from particular eras together.
I think when an artist has such a large and diverse catalogue as Bowie, Pink Floyd, The Who, and so on, it’s easy to get lost because almost every song sounds radically different, because these artists didn’t intend for you to listen to these songs in the order you are. Some bands barely change over the course of their career and some intentionally make singles, so you can get an easy read on them.
I would recommend sticking with The Rise And Fall of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars with tracks like “Suffragette City,” “Ziggy Stardust,” “Moonage Daydream,” & “Five Years”

Variety is the spice of life. The more songs of David Bowie you listen to, the more variety of sounds you will hear. That lead guitar is Mick Ronson. Absolutely superb artists. I was there in the day when Bowie first came onto the scene. Talented beyond talent.

Listening to this song by itself without the rest of the album is like pulling a chapter out of the middle of a book. It won’t really make sense. The whole piece is needed. The album Ziggy Stardust is a masterpiece.
Would love to see what you both thought of Bowie’s “Ashes to Ashes,” song is like nothing else. Would have to listen to “Space Oddity” first if you haven’t already. Bowie was incredible, was lucky to see him perform live once. He was the real deal, a true visionary.

Lex got it! You have to youtube the scene in The Martian when Matt Damon is floating in the spacecraft to this song. Unbelievably cool and it gives you a chill up your spine.

Although perhaps not widely considered one of his greatest songs, my favourite is Cat People.
The song doesn't end as abruptly as that, there are more la la la's and more guitar as it fades out. The whole stream could have been Bowie, Life on Mars, Space Oddity, Hallo Spaceboy, Moonage Daydream and many more!

The intimacy of listening to Bowie on headphones will take your mind on an aural adventure. When I first got a Sony Walkman back in the day, the first album I played was a Bowie hits compilation, the man was otherworldly, a Starman indeed!

If you think this sounds different today...if you put this in the context of the early 70's when Bowie was a relatively new artist, this caught the attention of so many younger aspiring artist which would eventually lead to "New Wave" being born by the end of the decade.
70's Bowie is the best.....If you haven't yet already, you need to do "Life on Mars", "Ziggy Stardust" and "The Jean Genie".......blow your mind !

Brad and Lex, you guys have just experienced the brilliance of David Bowie and Mick Ronson. A musical match made in heaven. Bowie is the reason why a 12 year old me decided to become a musician. Fast forward many decades and I’m still deep into music. Every song from the Ziggy Stardust and Aladdin Sane albums are excellent songs.
And if you wanna hear Bowie’s funk/RandB album, then listen to the Young Americans album.
So many unaware of how classy and jazzy Y.Am. album was -- they know title song and Fame(blah), but the rest of album very tight, cool but moody.

He has so many different artistic era's. I have so many favorite songs of his and they each sound like they came from a different band. You want rock? You want soul? You want R&B? You want operatic? You want punk? Folk? Glam rock? New age?
He's done it, he's done it very well and he's done even more.

Strangely comforting ... yes, this was a song of my early teenage years and it was indeed, strangely comforting.
Bowie is an odd one. Another Odd one is Bob Dylan. He actually has a very good, well known, song called Forever Young. I like the version from The Last Waltz with The Band.
Forever Young is my favorite Dylan song too. Got to see him perform it live in a parking lot once. Was completely mesmerized.
I'd suggest Echo & the Bunnymen "The Killing Moon" (post-punk, new wave) , The Church " Under the Milky way" (post-punk, new wave/alt rock), Smashing Pumpkins "Rocket" ( Alt rock, grunge, shoegaze/psychedelic rock), HUM "Stars" (alt rock, punk/post punk), Muse "Knights of Cydonia" (alt rock, prog rock/space rock) as well to fit the next Space stream !
David Bowie was a genius and a poet; His music blew me away growing up. I used to play this song and album full blast and sing as loud as I could. Brings back great memories as a kid. My older brother got his hair cut and died it just like Bowie. At first kids in school laughed but when they bought this album my brother was the stud in school. 1972

David Bowie is sirtainly one of the greatest rock/pop legends of all time. A multi-talentet creative genius. I think his 70s era is easiest to get into. But his 80s, 90s and 2000 vibes are also great! You guys should do whole album reactions and reviews IMO. The man who sold the world, Ziggy stardust and the spider from Mars, Diamond dogs Honky Dory and Aladdin Sane are all really great albums packed whit really great songs. Låter he changed his alter-ego to "the thin white duke", and whit that got into more of a soulful vibe. He was a really great artist, person, philosopher and comedian. Intelligent and good hearted as few. Dig deep into his career and persona. Hie is sourly missed. ❤🙏❤

David Bowie is one of the most chameleonic and diverse musicians you'll ever hear. Frequently reinvented himself and his music, often through characters. He even did drum n' bass and industrial albums in the 90s - "The Heart's Filthy Lesson", from the soundtrack of Se7en, is a well-remembered example of his industrial stuff, and "Little Wonder" was off his DnB album that ended up charting.
Pure musical genius from David Bowie, uniquely confident British sound and voice capturing the world's exploding fascination with space exploration, anything Sci Fi, bisexuality and so much more. Sung by his alter ego 'Ziggy Stardust' and the 'Spiders from Mars' being his backing band. Just fab ! .....lol.....well it was 1972.... :-) It's worth remembering his first big hit 'Starman' coincided with the moon landing in 1969.
You definitely missed a trick by not doing the video though.
You should do more of his songs, he explores so many styles.

First heard this in 72 when I was in the navy. When David played Long Beach CA we went down to watch all the kids come into the arena that were dressed as David with green and orange hair.

Wish I could hear this song for the first time again. Say that about so many songs. Maybe when I die I can hear this again when I rebirth. There is no feeling quite like that. I miss that more than anything.

We had so much good music back then and then this came out and it just added a whole new dimension to it all it was so unique, this sound , compared to what we were all listening to at that time I loved Bowie’s early stuff. This whole album is a unique vibe! This is probably my favorite album by him, but I remember I had A space oddity, Aladdin sane and Pinups. He pretty much lost me with diamond dogs, But again there was so much good music at that time it was easy to jump around to different bands. Saul Bowie live and that concert was awesome!

Early in David Bowie's career he was presenting Glam Rock, kinda like punk, new wave rock with performers wearing makeup and offbeat glitter costumes, platform shoes, that kind of thing. I'm not 100% certain but I believe the reference to 'The children' in this song means let the young people dig the music as they care to. Starman is providing it for them.

You should react to his live performances or his videos to get the full effect, the visuals are always better with any Bowie songs. Moonage Daydream is the best when you watch the live concert performance from the early 1970s when he's in his "Ziggy Stardust" persona and guitarist Mick Ronson does a great solo.

I was pissed when Bowie died. I was a kid when my friend 1st found Diamond Dogs in his older bros records. We fell in love with his artestry immediately. Even as a kid👍

I know you guys have danced around Bowie with mixed results depending on which incarnation of Bowie you jump into. But my recommendation is that you hang out in Bowie’s 1971-1972 records for a minute (the Hunky Dory and Ziggy Stardust records). These albums start a major creative journey for him and his listeners. They are rock songs but you are immediately aware that, with odd chord progressions, interesting instrumentation and arrangements, and incredibly imaginative lyrics, that you are dealing with a true creative. Songs like “Life on Mars,” “Queen Bitch,” “Oh, You Pretty Things,” “Moonage Daydream,” “Five Years,” “Ziggy Stardust,” and “Rock and Roll Suicide” - the whole Ziggy album, honestly - lays a foundation so solid that, by the time you get to Aladdin Sane, your ears and mind are open to hearing his interpretation of rock music. Many of the Bowie tracks you have listened to need that foundation. If “Heroes” was the first song of his that I heard, I don’t know how I would have responded. Same with “Let’s Dance.” And Bowie is my musical hero. Stay in this space for a little while with him. It is well-worth it and will set you up to really explore the records where his instrumentation moves into more experimental areas. Bowie’s music is sort of like a ladder. Each record is a different step. Some work better than others. But all are worth the climb to the next rung.

This isn’t really a “huge” song that younger people would know. Bowie isn’t really a global household name like an Elvis or MJ and most of my friends have probably never heard this song or even know who he was
