A great feature of Cubasis is that if you have an iPad but use a desktop PC you can still transfer a Cubasis multitrack project into Cubase Pro on a PC (or Mac if you have that) and it will load perfectly and you can keep going from there.
Both apps are great creative tools….. Much better than when I started recording/producing at home with my Tascam Porta One four track cassette recorder back in the day……
Hi great video. I use Cubase Pro 11, Cubasis 3, GarageBand iOS, Logic Pro. My main skill is with Cubase Pro. When I'm operating mobile/portable I use Cubasis 3 and GarageBand iOS. Cubasis has great features when you by the In-App plugins. The Arpeggiator can create step sequencers, rhythmic chords. The Chord Buttons let you create 12 chords of your own choosing such as G7b9, F/G, dim 7 chords, what ever chord shape you want.. I think GarageBand iOS and Cubasis are great and are fun to use. GarageBand iOS you can automate the synths by using merge recordings function.. Mobile/Portable music producing is fun with GB and CB on iOS.
I was a Cubase user from 1997 until Cubase 8.5. At that point I switched to Logic. Recently I got a copy of Cubase 12 so I could open some old projects. The thing that keeps me on Logic is Drummer. And the stock plugins are better in Logic, especially Amp Designer. This is also true of Pro Tools. They are lacking those two things I rely on. GarageBand on iOS looks just like GarageBand on macOS. It’s not Logic. But you can do a lot with GB. Grammy winning albums and hit songs have been done on GB. GB was my gateway to Logic. Everyone has a copy of GB. So I started collaborating with other people via GB. When I put grew the editing in GB I moved to Logic. The nice part about GB for iOS is you can open the projects in Logic. But it’s not Logic.
Garageband is perfect for me bc I use it to start an idea on the go then I polish it on logic at home when I have time. all the sounds garageband has logic has it too. Its just easy
I just purchased Cubasis because I want to use the iPad away from home and found I couldn’t easily export MIDI from Gb. For example in Cubasis it is easy to use Scaler 2 and generate MIDI parts, edit the and send them home where I can easily pull them into another DAW.
GarageBand iOS you can automate synths parameters by turning on merge recordings and whatever knob movements on the synths (cutoff, filter, modulations etc) will be recorded (behind the hood automation) but it does work fine...
I use Cubasis as my main daw I was using GarageBand I felt like it limited me it had no mixer and it doesn’t have my mixing stuff I choose Cubasis it’s a lot like the desktop I would also suggest Ableton it’s very good but quite expensive 100 dollars for only 16 tracks? Pro tools is amazing too I did have some problems with it but it’s a very good daw quite outdated but great Never used Cubase but I have seen
GarageBand has a strange layout which I can't get comfortable with. And finding that there's no facility for mastering and no master channel made it impossible for me to take GarageBand seriously. Once in awhile, I'll open GB on my iPad, but only to use the touchscreen instruments while running line outs to the interface on my Windows laptop, where I record them onto tracks in Reaper. When I do use my iPad at all, I must rush everything up while the battery loses 10% of it's power every five minutes, and then it takes about 15 or 20 hours for the iPad battery to charge back up.
I agree with virtually everything being said in the video. As dedicate Mac person since 1986, I'm a pro user of FCP X and a Logic Pro X enthusiast, but I still have a hard time with Garage Band and many of Apple's 'helpful' homebrewed iOS concepts. I also went for Cubasis for my iPad Pro and I have basically one fundemental gripe, that you didn't mention - no MARKERS! Even if Cubasis is meant as an enthusiast or semi-pro DAW - how can anybody work without searchable, named markers?
The various virtual drummers in Garageband are fantastic and I think pretty unique in iOS recording apps. I find that the synths and other virtual instruments in Cubasis 2 are quite superior to those in GB, even with GB having the Alchemy synth which was far better before Apple acquired it.
but surely, it more likely that a _non_ logic user will use garage band and if they're new to it then gb will slowly teach them until they step up to something bigger like garageband on the mac. If you already know logic then its not going to be problem what you use.
So basically I was correct when I said. That iPads are just gimped Macs to advertise Apple software by letting people use their retarded iPad app versions.
This is my EXACT issue with GB on the iPad. I like that it’s a free and simple to use music creation app, but as a logic user, that’s not what I really want from Apple. I crave an experience on the iPad that is similar to Logic even if it is not as complete. I sometimes forget how to do things in GB because I don’t use it very often and the functionality is hidden from the target user to simplify the interface. I will often learn how to do something (like apply an AU effect plug-in on a track) and then months later, I will need to go hunting for it again! It is not intuitive for those of us that just want a mobile DAW. I use Cubasis on occasion, but since I have standardized on Logic on the computer and get frustrated that I can’t easily move my work, I tend to just not use my iPad for scratchpad music creation. That’s a total shame.
I really appreciate the information... well done. I would say that logic and garage band simply target different types of users. I wonder how many people who use GB actually migrate to logic eventually. I don't think there are as many as one might think. It wouldn't surprise me that individuals who work with GB for their needs in this space probably stick with it and just get very good at it and never seek to migrate to Logic, especially for the cost. I also think that people getting started in professional music production might simply start with Logic based on people the might consult with or work with. I don't really see a need for most to ever "cross over" to Logic from GB (or the other way around). Regarding cubasis... well these are the different versions of the same software, one just adapted for the ipad. This use case is a completely different comparison in my mind at least. In any case.... thanks for all the content. Very much appreciated.
All of the things you mentioned are true and i agree with you! But hhat kills Garageband on ios more than anything is the fact that it forces you to maximize your exported track and there's no way around it. I even tried to export one stem at a time and it maximized it! This frustrated me so much and I did research on it and found out there's nothing you can do. However on the Mac OS version of Garageband there is in an option to turn Auto Maxamizing off when exporting but NOT in the IOS VERSION!!! WHY APPLE??? Garageband is useless to me now and I've basically given up on it. It's a shame because they have a lot of great sounds and instruments I would love to use.. another problom with the ios version of Garageband is that it only allowes you to use 4 Auv plugins at a time per track where as in the Mac OS version you get 15. These two issues killed any hope for the ipad version. It isn't a legitimate DAW sadly
People keep expecting one thing to act like the other. iOS is not MacOS and the interfaces will be necessarily different. Old school thinkers always expect things to stay the same and resist change at every corner. My only advice is to embrace change and adapt, or stay stagnant and go extinct. GarageBand is awesome and makes total sense if you spend time to experiment with the UI. It has almost everything you would need to create. Also, you don't need a a million add-ons to sound good. I find myself being more creative because I use only what is included in GB. Oddly, the limitation of add-on choices allowed me to concentrate on the music and not the "toys."
I tend to agree with most of what you wrote. Still, automation for more than volume isn’t a distraction…. That’s pretty important. Audio editing is equivalent to 1996 editing. Maybe even less capable. Add that and we’d be able to work professionally.
GB has better instruments and are tuned, Cubasis always freezes up on me especially with 3rd party apps among other things. But both have their 👍🏼’s that the other dont. Another thing to is I don’t like cubasis drums
I like it but the clips behave very strangely. And the editing tools sprinkled on the edges is very distracting when your in the heat of the moment it constantly breaks the concentration so many times during the process it simply kills the mood when I write .it’s great for cues and the inter app audio / Au is also very strong . But the location of important tools again ( fidgety) is a buzz kill.Garage band is a composer driven tool especially if you choose the right apps to use with it . It is designed to encourage composing. Also snapping and quantizing is very weird in cubasis I spent weeks trying to write just one song in it that was free of problems I could not anticipate ,so I shit canned it after several tries with the same results every time . The timeline is also extremely granular which is great but even with snapping causes timing issues. Your basically asking for a hybrid of GarageBand we’re all the instruments would be completely editable and that crapp third party garbage content no one likes that’s simply crap gone. How do you like side car? 👽
Music is ultimately the goal . It isn’t an engineers playground. After watching a lot of tutorials I came to realize that the power users of Logic are sometimes too concerned with mixing and production than composing or great songs . Your own app choice “ Sequencer” was laughable watching you use it and trying compose with it because it was such a crappy interface to begin with .👽
Cubasis would be my main DAW if the iPad's battery didn't drain so quickly and then take literally half a day to recharge, which makes it unrealistic for me to use any iOS music software.
The iPad's battery drains quickly, WHILE it's plugged into the wall, receiving the same full amount of power from a wall socket that a refrigerator does. I've had people I know lean on me hard, preaching to me about how superior Mac is to Windows. Thank God I opted to ignore their advice. Apple, a very advanced tech juggernaut, who name their platforms really "futuristic" names, such as "High Sierra", "Jethro's Homemade Teeth", etc etc
I don’t think you’re supposed to compare logic to GarageBand. They are two different products. It also sounds like you didn’t do much homework on GarageBand.
🤣 You do know GarageBand projects open in Logic Pro, right? And you can send Logic Projects into GarageBand… I know both apps about as well as anyone. They might be separate apps but they are certainly related as closely as Cubasis and Cubase.
At last! GarBageBand Exposed. Yes, it’s free. Whoopee! Why not GarageBand Pro(!!!) as a paid app kitted out to interconnect with LogicPro… Me? I write in Cubasis and transfer to LPX. Apple aren’t Interested. Thanks Sir☑️

Does the cubasis have multi layer sampling where you can play your one shots across the keyboard with out the pitches slowing down and speeding up?
