"Polunin & Zakharova, How The Partnership Began"

  • Giselle introduced them to each other and the rest is dance cinematic history. In 2015, Zakharova was looking for a partner for a new production by the Bolshoi. She needed an "Albrecht" for her "Giselle." Her search ended when she met Sergei Polunin.
    The resulting ballet was a masterpiece. Chosen to be a part of the Dance At The Cinema series, the performance was captured live on October 11, 2015 and has been shown again and again in cinemas all over the world.
    Music: Adolphe Adam
    Choreography: Yuri Grigorovich
    Cast: Svetlana Zakharova (Giselle), Sergei Polunin (Albrecht)
    Born in Kherson, Ukraine in 1989, Sergei Polunin / Сергей Полунин is a Russian ballet dancer. Famous for his “once every hundred years” talent, he has incredulous elevation and impeccable technique. From an early age, he displayed glorious dramatic range. Home videos of him as a small boy improvising to Pavarotti are very foretelling. At age 19, he became the youngest ever male principal dancer with London's Royal Ballet company.
    Ballet gained an unprecedented new awareness when he danced in Hozier’s viral video ”Take Me To Church.” People who would never have paid any attention to ballet began to watch the tattooed phenom. He is generally attributed with bringing ballet to the modern common man. Classical, yet cutting edge, Sergei starred in Diesel’s “Make Love Not Walls” campaign and has put his mark on many other promotions.
    Sergei is a much sought after model and actor. Fashion designers love his breathtaking physique and brooding good looks. He has garnered only positive reviews for his acting. His appearances include Kenneth Branagh's adaptation of the Orient Express, the biographical documentary Dancer, The White Crow, and Red Sparrow.

    Her comment about his surpressed attitude when rehearsing, rings very true. One of the problems he had at the Royal Ballet, was that he was pressurised into repetitive rehearsing; he said he hated it, and just wanted to perform. Everything she says in this clip, bears that out. He is transformed when he is dancing live, and fresh, in a performance. I think he brings a whole new spontaneous level to his onstage performances, that sets him apart, and above, other dancers. It is a pity that the Royal Ballet put so much pressure on him when he was still so young; (I think it was down to the Artistic Director at that time; they simultaneously lost several other dancers) had they been more sensitive and in tune with their talent, maybe we would still be enjoying him here in the UK now. Happily, the dancers seem to be thriving and happy now under the current director.

      He is trained in the British technique! He was taught from the age of 10 at the White Lodge, followed by the senior school in Covent Garden. Then principal dancer at the Royal Ballet by age of 19. He has "Royal Ballet" written through him like a stick of rock! Even when he left, he returned for some time and lived in London.... but he expresses emotion in a truly wonderful Russian way. Same with Vadim Montagirov

      He has danced classical ballets recently ...Coppelia a month ago in Munich, Romeo and Juliet in Verona in August, also Spartacus in August. And classical ballet underpins all his moves in his other ballets. I’m betting there will be more yet. He is only 30!

    • @AmberofBrisingham
      @AmberofBrisingham 4 роки тому +8

      @@fionaerleigh Hello Fiona, I don't know about Coppelia but don't think Romeo and Julet was the classical version. I was in Verona and it was great but not the classical version; a condensed and adapted one by Johan Kobborg working with Sergei, the group being on their own, funds (or lack of) matter a lot. I also saw Rasputin in Zurich: very interesting but short and with few dancers... Same problem... And it's such a shame because Sergei is at his best in big demanding productions of classical ballets.

      Return to classical. How was his performance in Coppelia? Is there a video of it?

    • @fionaerleigh
      @fionaerleigh 4 роки тому +4

      The Verona R&J was a new classical ballet by Johan Kobborg. That is no less valid as a classical ballet than versions by MacMillan, Cranko, Grigorovich, etc. I was there too.
      Rasputin is marketed as a dance drama. I agree it’s short, but Sergei is on stage for almost the entire performance and takes the majority of the dancing. I think he actually dances longer in Rasputin than in a traditional 3 act ballet which is padded out with intervals and corps de ballet numbers, pas de trois or other divertissements. I’ve seen it.
      Coppelia and Spartacus are full length traditional classical ballets - both performed in 2019. Fact. I’ve seen these too.
      Sacre is not a traditional classical ballet, but there are plenty of classical steps in it. Unusual to have a dancer perform for 35-40 minutes solo.
      I guess he is mostly dancing in his own ballets /shows lately. If you want to see him dance ..... get to one of his shows! You won’t come away unaffected.

      I would imagine that the effect of being left in a foreign country (England) so young, not speaking the language and being thrown into the spotlight with too much pressure at 19, probably did not help his self confidence. And not seeing his family for years. Very hard on a child growing to adulthood. His level of hard work and talent was extraordinary; and that was recognised; but he must have felt overlooked and used, as a person. I think he has in the past, felt insecure.

Their partnership began way earlier than the cinema version was made. There’s another video posted here on UA-cam, titled “the first joint in Giselle” at the Bolshoi in 2013.

    Oh, look at his body! He was in such a good shape, totally perfect for classical ballet at that time! I hope that one day all the archived material of him from 2007 to 2015 gets leaked. Those glimpses already take your breath away but unfortunately, also make you mourn the great loss as he will probably never dance and look like that again. He chose a different path and that’s fine, though I feel sad sometimes but that’s okay.
