Almost 20 years ago I was hired to do an translation job on the spot by a Brazilian guy who was doing business with the Chinese guy. I showed up with my Asus EEE PC and they kind of laughed at me. The Chinese guy was going to present in a hotel in a convention room for about 50 people. He hooked up his laptop and for some reason it didn't work with the projector. Making his trip to Brazil kind of useless. I offered them to use my tiny EEE PC . He put his flash drive in it and made the presentation from my laughable toy. My tiny warrior saved the night. Respect my eee PC.

When I was a kid I used to play the hell out of Penguin Racer. It was the best game on there by far

Oh yes, I remember these netbooks.
A netbook that has more I/O than a modern-day Apple laptop.

I am still using mine with linux working as a router with a USB modem, it give me the wifi on the ranch, still on original ssd. Back in the days it was my daily driver as an IT guy, it did all the necessary but the screen could have better resolution to skip connecting it to external monitor... brilliant device

I have a similar vintage Samsung NC10 netbook. It came with XP, but I've installed Linux Mint 19 on it. Likewise the battery needs replacing! I've also changed the HDD for an SDD, not a massive improvement, but it boots faster and the power consumption is reduced. When it was running XP I upgraded the RAM to 2GB as well.

Ah nice! I have just tried to install a really lightweight version of Linux on it, started filming the install process and then potentially bricked it! I'll have another look though, even if it's just a shell terminal I think it'll be a cool little device!

Yes a lightweight version that will work with that amount of memory unless you can upgrade the memory cheaply might be that way to go.

Bought two when they first came out. There was a very long waiting list, but I just happened to contact a shop which was expecting two the next day, so I drove over and purchased them. Sadly, Xandros, the Linux distro which was used to run the EEEPC 701 stopped releasing updates after a short period of time and the machine became pretty much useless for internet connectivity. I still have two of these machines - one is still stock, but the other runs a Debian version developed for these little netbooks and I use to to run a weather station. My Raspberry Pi collection are much more powerful, but it is nice to still be using my EEEPC.

Doesn't matter that Xandros stopped shortly releasing updates though because even the Linux-variant of EeePC was capable of running Windows XP, although knowing that almost 20 years later probably won't help you much.

I would live to see how this works with more ram and an ssd with a modern Linux on it.

I have the exact same pc!!!
Once I had that OS installed on it (Linux Xandros I think), but then I changed it with a Windows XP (Worst choice of my life)...
I still have the original recovery CD tho... I wonder if I can restore the original OS on it 🤔
It would be a perfect ebook reader today 😆

A friend of mine gave me two of these (different than the model you have). One was a little beat up (missing keys), but the other I've loaded with a minimal CrunchBang++ Linux distribution. Still figuring out just what I want to do with it.

My mum had one of these. Pretty nice little thing back then... I think it was 2007. Somehow she got WinXP running on this thing 😃

It's not really somehow, Asus supported WinXP for these devices, you can even still find XP drivers for these machines from Asus's website.

I actually had the larger screened sibling of this thing, it came with Windows XP which i promptly switched for Linux Mint, used to daily drive that thing on the couch and out n' about, until the SSD finally gave out 😢 Easy fix, but it sadly took a bad fall off the table one day while in my 'fix it on a rainy day' pile and the screen is cracked. RIP little buddy! (I think i still have it in a storage box somewhere, if i can source parts i -might- fix it, but despite the SSD actually carrying it performance wise, it was woefully under powered compared to some of its atom based counterparts in the day and it is only 32bit which limits its usefulness these days)

Metric isn't European. It's the system every country on the planet uses, except the 3 silly ones. Liberia, Myanmar and that other one...

"If you are European..." Check the map of countries using Imperial measurements 🤣 Otherwise, a nice review and buying help for a Linux portable.
