Just because I am not a hypocrite does not mean I don't enjoy the comedy aspect of it; as a artist I am simply stating that the argument given by the character claiming to like music that has a more lyrical and sensible aspect to it is just a hypocrite, and he can't represent what he is claiming to because of it.

She isn't able to back that up.
I think she has a point. By that I need the meeting that is conveyed for a lot of play Kendrick Lamar and such. And softer ones like J.Cole and Raleigh Ritchie. I feel like you're all are suffering from the negativity bias, and much you only focus on the negatives instead of the good. The difference between now and back in my parents day is that I think there was more of a gradient too good and bad songs, whereas today there is not really a great again. The song is either good, great, or trash. But the ones that are good, are really good, the ones that are great, are really great. After a while listening to my playlist of older hip-hop and sometimes it gets a little bit samey. And by Sammy, I mean it has the same tone and feel. I listen to newer hip hop and it's very refreshing about how varied it feels - the good ones. If I want something hard I listen to run the jewels, or Eminem, but if I want something that's kind of emotional I guess I could listen to Drake even though I don't really like listening to music like that, but then again J.Cole and Raleigh Richie are some of my favorites because of the things I talked about, really rich a particularly about mental illness and that's something that's highly ignored in the African American community. Rappers back in the day seems to be focused on sounding hard, which is why when the Bill Smith came around he was extremely popular because he wasn't sounding hard his rap was fun, light-hearted, but it always talking about Strife or drugs what sex are all that stuff, not that that is bad, but it was a nice change of. It was approachable from everyone. That's what I think she means.

Hilarious and original
The lyrical content is fine. I hate that a lot of modern rap is just rapping a triplet over a tight snare.
Stuie Malan Exactly! Music today just doesn’t have that swing.
Stuie Malan Truth
Mainstream hip-hop has always been hopping on trends, every g-funk song sounded the same, every boombap did too, you can't tell apart two autotune heavy rap song from the 2000's. In some years people will look back to trap and only remember the truly good tracks and complain about how the new sound that everyone is copying is bad.
Yes, but during those periods Rock was more dominant genre. Now a days Hip Hop is taking over mainstream music in a way that it never has before.
Stuie Malan lmfao dude shut up I bet you anything the only reason as to why you know the most common formula for modern hip hop is because you watched that video (of which I forgot the name to lol) explaining it. You're no better than the guy they're making a satirical joke about.
There's no way you can compare 80s 90 2000s, and 2010s rap. They are mostly very different things obviously there's some that borrow from each other and there's still close to the same genre but they're different. So whether or not you like one of the other depends on mostly when you grow up and what you're listening for I don't like hip hop right now but I'm also in my thirties and I like rap that has more word play and is Moore lyrically precise and somewhat message driven. I personally don't get this trap stuff for and a the other things but I'm old that's what these kids like that's what they like
William jones, why can't we compare them? Comparing implies you would want to show the differences as well as what makes them the same. Having that era of rap in a bubble, and acting like you can't touch it doesn't add anything to the conversation
Diego Diaz De La Vega i guess you're right my initial statement taken litterally is incorrect. You can compare anything. However i would argue that if you are trying to compare different eras of rap in order to determine which is better it will be difficult to find a consensus. Not only because it is aleays difficult to compare art, but also because it is confounded with the point i was initially attempting to make that these versions of rap are very different.
Ultimatley like all art it depends on what you are looking for and what you enjoy. Whats garbage to me is lit to someone else. As long as people dont pretend that opinion is fact its all good.
Check run the jewels they are dope. Got 3 albums and are a nice mix of old school with modern beats.

I think people are mistaking modern rap with mumble rap. There are some fantastic artists out today, if you're willing to look for them. Besides, everyone who says 80's 90's rap was all better than today's music are kind of misguided. Sure guys like nas and biggie and Tupac were excellent, but guys like NWA, as much as I adore them, were not nearly as lyrically talented as today's guys. Just like she said in the video, people are just nostalgic.
Because "guys like NWA" didn't have to be lyrical (ironically, Ice Cube is one of the greatest story teller and has best flow, and he kinda came from NWA). They had message and power. Of course there are plenty good mc's and rap groups nowdays, but whole picture of modern Hip Hop is bad, whack.
And to all Kendrick fanboys, saying he is genius and all, put him next to Cube, Pac, Dilated Peoples and he is only decent. His "genius" rely on being surrounded by mumbling idiots high on xanax. SIDE NOTE: I LIKE HIM.
Jizzy G yeah cube was a good storyteller. Which was fortunate for NWA because he wrote their songs for them.
Ps. Call me a kendrick Stan, but what has cube produced(not pac) that was on the same level as TPAB or GKMC?

naturally. MLK was heavily influenced by ghandi, but how often do you hear people talking about how MLK wasn’t as great as ghandi? Just because people take inspiration from others doesn’t make them less than. That’s the exact kind of nostalgia and personal bias referenced in the video.
gods son
yeah, I didn’t say that. Besides I wasn’t comparing MLK to anyone. It was an example of a great man taking influence from another.

That doesn’t make it a bad example.

YBN some of the people in the comments aren’t like that straw man in the video. People have their reasons for liking 90’s rap, and it’s not just about the nostalgia.
Lol right
No, rap is just objectively worse than it was in certain previous eras. People need to get over this nonsense that nothing is ever better nor worse in different eras. If no era is ever better nor worse than another, then nothing is good ever, because nothing can have value.
YMasterS you’re right about the last half but wrong about the first. Today’s rap is objectively better than any other era. Decades rank as such:

At least old rappers didn’t say “aaaaayyy” or “yuuuuuhh” every other word they said, they actually made nearly everything rhyme or at least had actual words
First of all, Rap doesn't have to rhyme. Secondly some old-school rap also has its own annoying habits, like mentioning the same word or verse four or six times. Thirdly, all of these things doesn't necessarily make either generation bad raps, and this is just the new form Rap has taken, at least until it changes again 2 or 3 years from now.
If anything, I'm glad Rap hasn't reached the point of stagnation like Rock did. The changes might not always be to one's tastes but at least you can rest easy knowing a new evolution is on the way.

Demonio Led Zeppelin started black metal
Every genre fan base has elitists. Self proclaimed metalheads seem to be particularly insufferable though.
I think it's most people who like metal are more obsessive about it than people who like other types of music.
Metal and electronic fans tend to be the most insufferable about genres from my experience. "Pffft, that's not real [new wave black metal/dark techstep] it's clearly [neo-black metal/UK techstep]. And you call yourself a fan?"

He ain't wrong about Cardi B though. I'm glad she has seen success, but I've not been impressed by anything she has produced.
I have mixed feelings about Cardi. She certainly knows how to make hype music, she's got a very charming personality and something a lot of people don't know is that she actually has somewhat of a singing voice (see Ozuna's "La Modelo"). Clearly she feels more comfortable rapping, and I've got to say I certainly prefer her over, say, Nicki Minaj. Now if only she could come up with some meaningful lyrics instead of boasting about meaningless shit the entire time, that'd be great. But as it is now, her songs are a definite bop. I could go loose on them in the club, is what I'm saying.

Well, to be fair, Cardi B is not fully committed to rap. She has said herself that she's not interested in becoming the Queen of rap, since she doesn't know much about lyricism or creating good flows. THAT'S what I miss about old school hip hop. People got in it to save their lives, to be the best... now, it's all a joke. A platinum rap song can be made in a day by some white boy from Ohio, a nine year old can make diss tracks that go viral... the genre is fucked.
Next time please be in that sketch! You actually make sense!
Me (No, not Ashildr, I had the name before Doctor Who, and I'm not changing it!) Thank you for the compliment! I appreciate it! I mean, people like the character Raphael is playing do exist, they’re just a loud minority that paint people who actually criticize the new sound in a bad light.
Yeah, I've had an argument with a guy like that just the other day. Just because there's emotions attached to some songs it doesn't make them good. "Ie ice baby" has some awesome memories attached to it for me, but I'd lie if I said it wasn't shit. But lyricism and people so devoted to their art is just something that got lost in the last few years with all those sound cloud mumble rappers who grew up on rap but have nothing to rap about as they grew up in their cocoons, sheltered and struggle-free. So they just revert to bitching and flexing. They don't have any incentives to improve their style because they're famous no matter what because they had the luck to find a good beat and mumble some words to it and then sold it to millions. I'd want to see one of those in a rap battle. But, don't get me wrong, there's still good ones in the game, they just become rarer and rarer, given that there's easier ways to become famous.
Me (No, not Ashildr, I had the name before Doctor Who, and I'm not changing it!) FACTS!!! I totally agree with both of you guy's points.
To say it's all a joke kinda spits in the face of every good recent Rap artists. Even then, there were laughably bad ones with some getting into it because they think it'd make them a quick buck. These kinds of things will happen regardless of the era. Not every participant will be great at the craft. Some might actually be trying but just isn't spitting out any coherency.
Rap hasn't gotten worse, but it definitely has changed.
They just disregarded the golden age of hip hop. Whether it was violent or backpacky, most of the 90s was great and innovating. Today's rap, well at least the mainstream, is pale in comparison.
Master Hoshi Tupac, biggie , rakim , big l, Ll cool j, krs one, scarface, Nas and few others...Now that's real hip hop from the 90s..the Golden Era...
Shadow Pro exactly
Shadow Pro it gets deeper bro...
Wu tang, jeru the damaja, the fugees, Jamal, redman, illogic, Aesop Rock, Common, Mos Def, Talib Kawli, Big pun, many more. The 90s was filled with heavy hitters, if our generation evolved from that era of rap, we would have more people like Kendrick, Ab soul, capital steez, and elzhi to name a few. But that would have been to good to be true.
Boyz In The Hood by Dynamite Hack is the best rap song
Im starting to feel like a rap snob , rap snob
I never noticed the background beat playing the entire time
Okay but My Adidas is actually great though.
Raf had it backwards. Rap is what you like. Hip hop is what's f'd up right now.
Rap (Rhythm And Poetry) is the art form. Hip hop is the culture surrounding it. It's that culture that has twisted and ruined rap.
Mike-Tysons Lisp no I didn't. I'm being a rap snob.
rap and hip hop isnt ruined its just evolving
You're sure it's not the guys that sound like Bone Thugs with a mouth full of cherry tomatoes and their lips sewn together?
WORD
Thats not what rap stands for
Hippy hop owh! The alliteration!! That killed me.
I eat baby food to make me feel nostalgic too
I get what the video is saying but 90s era rap was incredibly better than today’s rap. It used to be about skill and being lyrical now it’s about having money and who can repeat the most words
How's that rose coloured glasses going for ya?
Eunro Toy Soldiers, Uncle Sam God Damn, Gangster's Paradise, Dear Mama....all lyrically superior than today's
Kendrick? Jpegmafia? Flying Lotus? All amazing and all have large followings.
You know what the 90s also gave us? Vanilla Ice, Shaq, Marky Mark. The 90s were filled with terrible MCs with no flow. Not to mention the shitty way Rappers were treated in the music industry back then.
Drop the nostalgia and listen to modern hip hop, now is the best time for rap music
Relzic B uhhh your just being the person they are making fun off
You are LITERALLY parroting everything that this exact video you're commenting on was making fun of. Like, to a degree that this comment almost seems like a joke. Wow.
Whenever Katie’s in a sketch, you know it’s about to be amazing!
This also fits with the "they don't make movies/videogames like they used to" debate
Probably on of the best Chestang sketch (and also for his acting)
Metal snobs are even worse
