I keep a case of them on hand. They're a lot more convenient to pack then most other types of food. When you've been on the go for 6 hours or more doing physical shit having one helps. I've gone through hurricanes, blizzards, ice storms, and tornados and I've been out cleaning up after they were done. The ration heater does smell and it does create hydrogen gas so they're best used away from a flame or outdoors. Also jalapeno cheddar is the best spread.

Jono, there are documentaries that talk about the current selection of MREs and how they are made. You might also like the ones that talk about the airline meals too. Not sure if they sell internationally but a company called Cheaper Than Dirty as well as a company called US Calvary does military surplus products including MRE rations. If you read the instructions on the heater pack it tells you how to use it.

The italian bread is like the dry biscuits. We had a pack every month as a ration, plus chocolate (when I was in the Navy).

MRE's were engineered for the correct dietary needs that a person needed in the field. When I was in the Army in the late 80's, early 90's we would have loved to have what they have now. When the heaters came out it was a game changer. Before them we used to heat our entree on the engine block of whatever vehicle we were driving. It's not an expiration date, it's a manufacturing date. We used to take the coffee packets and use it as dip just to get the caffeine.

I was in the army in 1970 and had c and k rations which came in cans that you either ate cold or
had to find a way to heat them. And god forbid you lost the small can opener which I think was called a p 39 you used your bayonet. In comparison, these MREs are a gourmet meal.

Joined in 1974 and ate a lot of C rations. I used to carry a p38 can opener on my dog tags chain so I'd have it at all times. There were some meals that were to be avoided, but if you got a chocolate bar you were lucky. They also came with a 4 pack of cigarettes. Most of the time the cooks would heat them up in a dedicated trash can or if you were on the road you'd punch a hole in it and put it on your truck engine. Next pee stop you would have a hot meal which was important if you got the pork slices that were jellified when cold.

They are not "SEAL rations". They are the same MRE's we've all eaten.
BTW, "Warfighter" means ALL SERVICES that have members that get shot at. "Soldier" is specifically a US army member, not Navy, USAF or USSF. They did not do some research

You gotta remember that these meals are made as emergency rations. When you’re muddy, tired, wet, and hungry, they really are pretty good. But we would avoid them if we could.

They run, on average, 2500 to 3000 calories per. On paper, you're supposed to be issued at least two per day, but, in reality, during the invasion of Iraq, we were lucky if we got one. We were constantly outrunning our supplies. The bread is shelf-stable, so, it lasts, but, it's VERY dry. The only item worth a damn, is the cheese spread with jalapenos.

For reals! i was cool with the 1 MRE for how every many months it was till we got everything up and going. IT was the 1 liter of water a day that got to me (unless it was on of those days/missions ) i was the 63rd truck in the convoy when we invaded. went to Baghdad airport then after a few days, played hop scotch to each fob or base we made or took over. I miss it . then my 3th time their switched MOS and felt like i was on vacation. 2 man trailers, AC. fresh folded laundry 2 times a week. lived in PT's unless there was some type of battle staff or something. @Exussailor we should challenge @jono to do the MRE cracker challenge. ALL you gotta do Jono is eat both crackers in 2 minutes with no water. IF you do it and accomplish it. WHen you take your trip stateside I will PAY for 1 night at the hotel

"italian breadsticks" doesn't mean it's italian bread or made in a way that italians would make it. "italian" is a popular descriptor for a blend of savory herbs in the US including oregano rosemary thyme marjoram and basil. you can buy it pre mixed in jars that say "italian seasoning" on the label. so "italian breadsticks" implies that they are breadsticks that have some dried herb seasoning on them.

You probably want to add salt to the main meal, whatever the main meal is its always gonna be like paste, heavy meal when you are hungry. I don't think I could eat something that expired 9 years ago, I hope you have a roll of toilet paper ready just in case. Take about 5 or 6 of those packages with chemical in it and put it in a 1 liter plastic soda bottle then add the water and quickly put the cap on , shake it and throw it and cover your ears, it will explode and be very, very loud, I tried it and I got the attention of a couple of deaf people, yes that loud

The training for the United States Navy Seals is extremely difficult. Less than 1 percent of the Naval infantry are even selected for training and of these 1 percent selected only 3 percent of them ever complete and pass the training to become Seals. This is one of the most elite fighting forces in the world.
