Me: "Ooooh, what's this? Ecco?"
Grandmom: "It was on sale. Thought you might like it."
Me: "Thanks grandma!"
She had no idea exactly what she purchased. She bought video game gold. No, platinum. Thanks, grandma.
26 years ago now 😱
I also wanna thank your grandma. awesome lady for doing that.
Grandma's always finding them weird, obscure games
No need for a dark lord of the sith when you have a grandma like that
For those trying to count at home, August 25, 1994 is the release date of Ecco: The Tides of Time.
I make sure to come back to this video from time to time. 2020

We need ecco to save us now more than ever lol 2021
Yes this was a part of my childhood. One of the hardest games
Who'd have thought a game about a dolphin saving others could be so damn scary?
You should've seen the first one, seriously.
@@Delta225 "How high can you jump?"
That innocent little line didn't make my 10 year old self brace himself for the horror that was yet to come.
*Sea of Darkness* level memories ^.^
I haven’t even played the game and Fish City gives me the shivers
@@alanbareiro6806ikr
Best song on Genesis. It's so dark and mysterious. The original game was innocuous and didn't brace you for the potential terror it unleashed but with Tides of Time you immediately know, something's off.
Listen to this or imagine it in your head while being underwater.
@@KalebKing88 i would get out of the water ASAP
I love the ecco series because of the cosmic horror elements it has
Exactly what I was thinking well said this is my favorite out of the soundtrack
"with Tides of Time you immediately know, something's off." Most likely because it's a sequel so you know that they're going to try & up the ante whereas the first one had to give you something innocent just so that crazy portal event at the beginning would be more shocking.
You can tell just by this theme alone, things are going to be more serious in this game.
agreed. I have the game and it is HARD.
+YOUNGBLOOD 428 it's difficult, and he's on a serious mission.
Final Cam WHICH I CANNOT BEAT.
You are so so so SO right T^T
Yes this is the first level music and you already know the shits gets real
This along with that watery Sega logo used to give me chills...
Now I get chills of nostalgia.
As a kid I felt like crying to this song. Now I feel like crying even more from remembering it.
Yep, played this from the age of 5 onwards, always thought it was magic and I still do. There's something deeply emotional about this game and it's music.
He was talking about it's bullshit difficulty.
Sure, was difficult in parts. Deep Ocean and the ice crabs used to scare the heck out of me in the first game. In the second, the Medusa.
I know just what you mean, it's a strange feeling that this game brings even now.
Cry even more after finding out what led to inspiring this game.
Me, two decades ago: "I want the game with the dolphin!"
Me, two decades minus one year ago: "Perhaps... never stepping foot in the sea again is for the best"
And I never did.
1994: Ooh, Ecco the dolphin!

I hear it in omr

true
Creepy ass Requiem for a Dream sounding tune.
I get the same vibe, brother !
Considering that the game was released 6 years before the movie, I guess it could easily be one of the inspiration sources for Clint Mansell.
I was wondering why the song felt so familiar, but it really does remind me of "Requirem for a Dream", and that song was everywhere. Thanks for pointing it out.
Open ocean is my biggest fear to this day because if this soundtrack and game. I'm so fascinated by all of the animals, but I have nightmares too. The thing is, I forgot what gave me the fear itself. Then Ecco popped into my head this morning and it all made sense. Watching gameplay of those weird pod species and jelly fish.. Feeling I can't describe. Can't believe a video game from 20 years ago can give you this feeling
I am terrified of oceans. Not because of Ecco, though. I'd guess it's a pretty common thing, though. It's a vast, dark ecosystem that's pretty alien to humans with all its dangers. Kind of like getting thrown into space.
Scarier than space, there's nothing but dust in space, there's fucking monsters in the ocean.

I was already a little iffy on water when I played this game as a kid. The first time I encountered one of the Vortex Drones scared the everliving shit out of me. I pretty much turned the game off after that. I hadn't played the first game, so I had no idea what it was.
Needless to say, watching people play Subnautica on Twitch was a horror game for me.
@@knightshousegames , Yessss, I'll never forgot me and my friend playing this as kids, and we got to Two Tides, where the first Vortex Drone is and we shat ourselves when we casually came across it 😆😆. I couldn't finish the level fearing there were more of them deeper down.
Memories... First time listening to this after more than 10 years
Same!! O.M.G the feels...
Already 6 years since I commented this, time really goes by so quick.
The first time I heard this was on Sonic.EXE One Last Round
But now I have found the origins
Incredible soundtrack. So melancholic for a game about a Dolphin. But then Ecco was a really melancholic game!
Whenever I hear this track, I imagine gloomy windy day and grey, cold sky.
That was the day when I first heard this music at the video game store. Never forget you, 1998.
One of my first Megadrive games. Hearing this again almost gives me a chill.
+GSF * Almost? ALMOST?!
Me when im at a base while a blue hedgehog tries to kill me:
let me the fuck in dawg
finally someone who is aware someone uses this in the game😔- also fr😭
Every time I hear this song, I can see myself walking around Disney World in 2015 with Christmas lights everywhere and a cheery feeling in the air.
This was THE creepiest game I've ever played.
More than any Resident Evil, Silent Hill-- you name it. I've played em all and that shit doesn't even come close.
Did you play Project zero?...
@@milesr4609 Don't you mean Fatal Frame?
Everything about this game, not to mention the soundtrack, is so haunting. It's brilliant.
Such a soothing song to listen to when you're in an underground section of an aquarium.
I love Ecco 2 title music, just memories flooding back from 95'
Since Sega dropped ecco the dolphin and screwed up sonic the hedgehog I realized that it was probably better for ecco's legacy if he swam away into the tides of time, I do miss that little dolphin though
You know, that's a really good point. I still get bummed that Ecco 3 was never properly conceived, but you're right...it's a better fate than being bludgeoned to death and milked for every last drop like Sonic.
Maybe, but Sega is not only Sonic (wich i love, and grow up with) look at they other franchises, they do (AM2 in the old times) and they are doing really amazing jobs, Yakuza, Phantasy star online 2, Valkirya chronicles, the upcoming Sakura taisen, Shenmue 3, streets of rage IV or Panzer dragoon remake. SEGA is coming back and now is the time for some of his franchises to make a comeback.
I would realy love to see the return of (first of all) Ecco, but also Vectorman, Ristar, Nights and a Phantasy Star offline with Alis Landale as the main char, all these games made with the proper love and dedication they deserve. And then a new Sonic adventure to put the cherry on the cake.
We can only hope...
@@milesr4609 I hate Yakuza.
@@Nathan-rb3qp it's your problem mate..😒.
@@milesr4609 Sega already had a game very similar to Yakuza with Shenmue but Shenmue was pushed aside to focus on a much inferior product.
I woke up with this in my head despite not thinking about the game for years, so I watched a play through of the first one, and now this one, it’s so much deeper than I thought it would be, I love it.
These games have aged so well. So dark and mysterious. I would love to see a new game in the series but I'm afraid they will mess it up.
If they ever make a new Subnautica game, they need to take more design cues from Ecco
“Your time is over, buddy.”
Sonic.EXE OLR reference!!!
I've probably listened to it a couple thousand times. I vividly remember watching this opening sequence for the first time. That chord progression is so haunting, unexpected, and beautiful. It was an impressionable surprise to me every measure through the song, and I had the melody memorized right away. This track was in the back of the mind for the decade it took to beat this game. I often didn't know how to progress, but this was always an earworm for me. Afterwards, it makes sense as the overture to the deep designs that are at play in this story.
This was back when games really required some sharpened skills as well a whole hell of a lot of patience in order to complete.
That explains why I never completed it then 😆
The Tides of Time, What a Great Game!
Is it a problem that this games soundtrack kinda makes me wanna cry each song
+Daniel Diamondminer - diamond Man, I remember one time when as a kid I remembered this song playing in my head and I told my aunt that this song makes me want to cry.
TheOneZytel also it kinda reminds me of the time where All I had to play was a Nintendo 64 and a Game boy color (yet I'm only 14 :3)
+Daniel “diamond” Diamondminer Same.
Problem? No, I think it's what they were aiming for. Or at least I get the same kind of feelings.
Remember this game came out in the 90s & there was a heavy enfecices on environmental issues. Everything was the fault of ‘MAN’. It’s a great game but it made me feel sad & guiltily. Also the games difficulty alone made me cry.
This seems to scare a lot of people, but I find the melancholy sound mixed with the beautiful ocean to be the most fascinating look a game has ever had. Especially the bubbly sega logo at the beginning and the ring stages were a treat to look at
Such an old game, but probably one of the best game soundtracks ever.
I never did manage to beat it... got stuck later.
Perfect for running from a demonic hedgehog in a genius' base
Just remembered this after like 5 years and was hit with nostalgia
It sounds and feels so amazingly trite to say, but this game really had an emotional impact on me as a kid. I remember my best friend calling up that sega hotline, she was so horrifed over the ending. I remember her telling me all about it and having me play for the first time (I had the snes, a far happier system, I suppose).
That little dolphin, alone in endless blue, lost to the immutable stream of time.
2022. Still top soundtrack.
2023 now
this song makes me think of something old, that is wearing out, but still doing its job because nothing else can ever replace it. Something irreplaceable and special that is like nothing else. Something whose successor, if any, has a long way to go to replace it. ...Like the Ecco series itself. Whatever the song represents to you, it has one last job to do. Then, it can rest.
Ecco. It represents him in my opinion. I think this theme shows us something inside Ecco is broken after the first game.
Fun fact:
This song was made by recording actual sounds that sea creatures make to communicate to each other. Like whales, dolphins, squids.
No way. That makes this game even better
Huh, interesting. I can hear some clicks and squeaks in there, now that you mention it. What a legendary game
@@metalgamerjonny6410 it truly is.
Still, I think this theme shows us something inside Ecco is broken after the first game.
Ecco one and two is hard but above all it's surreal and unique.
this song stays in my head
can't forget all the time i spend trying to pass and discover levels when i was a kid
great game
this theme is possibly the greatest of all time. and I grew up on super Nintendo. never played this game until a couple weeks ago
26 years later and this song is still amazing and anxiety inducing.
This song made me feel very uneasy as a small child lol. Same kind of vibe the old Robert Stack "Unsolved Mysteries" theme gave me.
I remember Ecco the Dolphin being my favorite series. Really sharpened my skills as a gamer. They taught me patience, timing, and of course reading, lol. This theme still chills me to the bone.
who would've thought that a song from 1994 would be used 30 years later for a creepypasta made a game about bullying the pasta
The Ecco The Dolphin series has always been one of my favorites since I was a kid. It has a great mix of difficulty, horror, sci-fi and wonderous storyline.
*"Just give up all at once."*
*"Why do you keep looking for redemption? This is my world and you can't escape."*
¿Sonic.OMT?. i think because the robotnik demo have this music.

Its Still Relaxing.
Wow...the nostalgia...playing this for the first time as a kid, meeting fans online years later, finally beating the Vortex Queen (only to find there's 3 more levels)...
Good times
Hard to believe that one dolphin could do so much for the planet. Makes you want to rethink buying tuna ever again, lol. Btw, I'm very glad to see the entire soundtrack for this game up on the Tube, its easily one of the best ever!
Great song!!!
Why is that freshwater turtle in the sea.
***** lol
Beta5SASP bullshit that's how
Dolphins are time traveling, underwater aliens invading, and *that's* that you're questioning? lol
Me realizing games like this are why synthwave music makes me feel nostalgic.
Real shit man. It didn’t even dawn on me until reading your comment.
Epic song. Totally fits with the darkness of the game.
The stuff dreams and nightmares are made of. Thanks so much for posting !!!
Both games made such a good job making these stories so creepy it's unbelievable. Thanks Sega for this masterpiece during my childhood
how good does that sound!!!!!!!
Both Ecco games were a joy to play. One of the only "fuck me, this is hard" video game series I still couldn't put down.
I really RALLY HATE how people would always say that this game sucks or say "its gay" just because you're playing as a dolphin and then be biased againts the whole game and say everything about it sucks!!!
Well #@&% them!!! This game's graphics, music, and story is AWESOME!!!
Eccos choice to risk his own existence to protect the time continuum remains one of the boldest decisions in video game history
If only most real life dolphins were more like our hero, personality-wise... 😢
Ecco was trully one of a kind.
A very concise and accurate way to sum it up. The Sega CD version is one of my top 10 favorite games of all time. I preferred the music slightly over the Genesis version, and the history glyph cut scenes really added to the storyline.
They don't make em like this anymore.
I played this game to death when I was little. I just turned 30 this year and this theme STILL sends chills down my spine. I love this game so much, even if it didn't age all that well. ;w;
I feel like it aged pretty well actually. I just beat it for the second time last night and I gotta say I just love it!!! The controls are hard, but once you get used to it it's pretty alright. It's a game that tests your skills. Lol
Im 43 and this has been burned in my brain as long as I can remember. It’s haunting yet familiar like home.
This song is hands down one of the most brilliantly written video game songs, even my favorite ecco songs don't compete in terms of brilliance. (Not just talking about how awesome it is, but the actual composition that makes it up).
Did you know, what you hear isn't actually what's played? That's why remixes have such a hard time and can't seem to do it justice. It's also why the song typically provokes heavier vibes and emotions in people.
Listening to the song normally, and you'll hear a ascending and descending scale, a wave like feeling. But if you highlight left or right ears (or listen with only half of your headphones), you'll notice that there isn't a scale at all. it's multiple overlapping back and forths. Multiple layers of of similar and well timed patterns.
That's why it feels like it crashes upon itself while still flowing, in probably the most beautiful way possible.
December 2022 and still jamming to the ost.
stawg007 I totally agree. They were hard and that just made them more fun. I'm proud to say that I actually totally beat both Ecco games when I was 10 or 11. I was kind of a nerd though, I'd sit and play Ecco all....day.....long..... then have some kind of nightmare about those Vortex. Serious, I swear my whole summer vacation of off school that year that's all I did was play Ecco I loved those games so much.
Got this for my birthday when it came out. My friends and I spent all afternoon trying to get past the first few levels. Tough game! Geez
Buenísimo!!!
Lo mismo digo ;3
jeez christ. i haven't played exactly this game, but HOLY NUTS, this theme sounds so GODDAMN MAGNIFICENT. i really admire and like it. someone must do some kinda orchestral cover for it.
@poshpsylocke great concept! i was talking about the notion of dolphins evolving to a land/water species that communicate like us and how smart they would be. i love throwing ideas around.
Cool, thanks! Yeah this is quite possibly my favorite Sega Genesis / Mega Drive soundtrack. :)
Ah, love this song, and game!
Used in "Sally.EXE Continued Nightmare Eye of three" (high pitched)
Oh noooo why they must use it in bad exe games???

This song just popped into my head earlier today lol....classic
I remember sitting and just watching the password screen. A screen Filled with Moorish idols (yellow fish with black stripes), then if you take to long, a shark would pass by and they swim away.
This song makes the passage of time feel tangible.

So we'll fish him. Because he can take it. Because he's not our hero. He's a silent dorado. A protective porpoise. A Dark Delfino.

Amazing music. Game drove me nuts as a kid. One day i will finish it, one day..
i remember getting this game for my seventh birthday. i snuck it out of my parents' closet and played through the first few levels a week early, and then i re-wrapped it and put it back XD
so many awesome memories.

I've always felt like this theme sounded familiar. It's got that haunting Batman vibe. Anyone know of any classic piano tunes or orchestral pieces that sounded similar? This song is pure genius! Loved this game.
The villain was never even defeated it just escaped into the past.
