The theory that Mae is astral projecting instead of dreaming during the “dream segments” is very interesting, because of how much she sleeps. I wonder if during part of the time that she is “sleeping” she is astral projecting, and she sleeps a long time to make up for some of the time that she wouldn’t be properly resting. However, I agree, she most likely sleeps in because of her declining mental state.
Love your video so much! Love indepth videos about Night in the Woods. It's such a great game! People are SO rude when discussing Mae online though! It frustrates me that Mae gets talked about like trash all over forums and stuff. "She's just a spoiled brat who squandered everything because she's SO immature. Just look at her friends." Ok. Let's look at them. They all have HORRIBLE families that could not or WOULD NOT send their kids to college. Mae's family doesn't lock her up in the basement like Angus. They work unlike Bea's dad. And Gregg's parents literally abandoned him. All of Mae's friends had to grow up TOO fast. Mae is in a different place from all of them BECAUSE her family is the most healthy out of all of them. And she wasn't forced to raise herself or step into her parent's roll as a teenager... "Mae is ungrateful and lazy" MAE HAS A MENTAL ILLNESS!!! What do you want from her!! Christ! (And, in the context of the game, it's because an eldritch god is messing with her personally!!) For some people, an illness doesn't show itself until the person goes through A LOT of stress. (Like graduating high school or starting college.) My mom has bipolar 1 disorder and she had her first episode when she graduated high school and really bad episodes when she gave birth. My older sister, who has type 2, her first episode happened when we moved to a new state when she was 10. Traditional college just doesn't work with some people's health and that's fine! (My mom did not go to college but my sister has her DOCTORATE in neuropsychology. So don't think that if someone has a mental illness that means they can't do well in school. It's not the case. Like i said, it works for SOME people.) All that being said, Mae's not a failure! She's being responsible and removing herself from a dangerous situation. It's like being angry at someone for having arthritis and the fact that they can't work with their hands all day. School just didnt work out for her. There are SO many alternatives to traditional university that could work so much better with her health. I get that, in the game, Bea tells Mae (and the player) that Mae is an immature brat for ditching college but should we take her word as gospel? At that time she didn't know what Mae was going through. That would be WILD if she told Mae that she should have stuck it out and murdered her classmates just to finish college... Anyway I gotta take a break from the sub reddit 😅 had to let that rant out somewhere. Thanks!!
In the new community post, OwlBatross mentions how this isn't the last Night in the Woods video, just of the character analysis series. SO WE GOT MORE TOO GO!!!
I went into NitW bind just over a month now, after getting it in a steam sale, and falling absolutely in love with it! Your video's, and most notably channel, have been one of the BEST parts of finding this amazing game! In one way its sorta sad I wasn't here when the game first kicked off; but at the same time the game both coming to me when I needed it, and having the pleasure of going through all the old uploads of your, and other channel's, AND the community seeming just as strong, has lead me to believing I've chose the down right PERFECT time to get into NitW! Thanks for these amazing videos! To the future!
By the way, not only is Mae the first Borowski to go to college, she could be the LAST one as well. Mae doesn't want kids, and since we don't know Aunt Mall Cop's situation, the Borowski name could die with Mae.
@@sebp9882 "Eww, babies" Also when she's reminiscing about the picture she drew about her farm family, it's just her and her wife and some dogs, no kids.
I would love to see a video where you discuss what kind of support may should have received after the "killer incident" and how you believe it could have changed the events of her life
So glad to have been here for the finale, even if I was well late to the party itself. Thank you for making so any excellent videos on Night in The Woods!
This is it, boys. This series was awesome. OwlBatRoss, thank you for getting me back into this incredible game. I'll make sure to watch every one of your other videos.
I've always related to Mae and I don't know where else to express this, so to the comments I go. NITW came out when I was in middle school and even then I related to her - A LOT. I was going through a hard time. I was angry, afraid of myself and what I might do, fighting through long periods of derealization and depersonalization, felt like I couldn't do anything right. I was like Mae after the softball game. I'd been hospitalized twice in rapid succession due to my mental illness shit at 12 years old. I was labeled dangerous by my school counselor and even suspended after enough times being sent home due to what I would later learn were highly distressing intrusive thoughts, images, and bouts of depersonalization, things I didn't even know were a thing and simply believed were me actually wanting to hurt those around me. In my therapist's words, "they did [me] dirty". Now, as a college dropout, I relate to her even more. I had to drop out because of things outside of my control, and I feel so guilty about it. It might be for a different reason (chronic pain which I still have no clue the origin of) but my mental health was and still is in the gutter. I feel like Mae, truly I do. I'm struggling to come to terms with the fact that I'm getting older just like Mae seems to be. My friends, even after only one year, all seem to have changed except me. Still, there's hope, just like there's hope for Mae at the end of the game. I don't know, I guess this is just my way of saying thank you for this series and expressing how much the game means to me alongside how much I appreciate knowing others like it just as much as I do.
Good video but I also wanted to say thank you for being an Autistic support teacher. I had something similar to that in school to help me with my Autism, and I'm still friends with the person who helped me. Personally, I don't think Mae is Autistic, although I wouldn't be astonished if the game developers revealed that Gregg has ADHD. I'm not saying he definitely does, but the thought crossed my mind.
Thank you for this fantastic series. I do not think I would have loved this game so much if it wasn't for your in depth analysis of its characters and themes. Genuinely, you helped keep the fandom alive for a long while, and I can't thank you enough for it.
Man, I just came across your channel not too long ago and binged nearly all of your NiTW content. Truly appreciate your dedication to your theories and this game! Thanks 🙏🏼
This is definitely your best vid yet and even though I’m sad your nitw analysis videos are over I’m glad I was able to be there to see all of them tell the end can’t wait for whatever other videos you make about this amazing game 💜🦉
I remember in a premier I said I was working on a long nitw video, and you said you’d be excited to see it. To be honest I’ve rewrote the first part of the script a million times. I’m not sure how much there is that I can say that hasn’t already been said by established creators since the game came out. I’m also somewhat worried about if when I watch this video in the morning, I’ll realise you’ve covered something I wanted to as well. I’m sure I’ll figure something out eventually, and I’m really thankful for all your great videos.
My favorite series for my favorite game. The game and your videos have helped me get through so much and have positive perspectives on things. Truly. Thank you for this series
a note about mae being tired all the time in the long fall: i can, unfortunately, say from experience that for some people when you're extremely low mentally often times no matter how much you sleep you still end up tired either very fast or you don't get any proper rest while you sleep. so again, that can go either way in the astral projection-or-sleep theory. personally im more on the side of mae *is* sleeping but just not getting good rest. (though i do still believe in nitw's world having some paranatural phenomena about)
It’s honestly a bit refreshing to see someone who works with autistic people rather than being autistic himself talking about a character being autistic or not🙏
46:33 I agree that Eide is supposed to be a sort of mirror to Mae, but in a different way. I always interpreted him as a representation of what Mae could have become - someone who is so obsessed with the place they grew up in, they would do anything to keep it alive, even if said thing is joining a murder cult. I feel her sympathy towards the cult is more evidence to this, as she's someone in a situation like them. I also believe that Eide being mad at Mae and the others isn't just because of the crossbow - though that's 1 reason. I think the main reason is, unlike Mae - who has grown a lot over the few days she has been back, and now understands that time stands still for no-one - Eide is someone who has stayed in town, slowly growing old and rotting away, never getting over his obsession with what once was.
I love these videos so much. Your commentary on mental illness vs. Black Goat was right on, and made me tear up. Also, I'm an artist. I definitely volunteer to help with any art you might need. :D
This video made me realize I am literally Mae from this game, I need to straighten up and fly right and get a job. Or maybe I should find some devil murder cult in the tunnels underneath my small midwestern town and get rid of them like in the game.
A sentiment shared. At first I couldn't stand Mae; I thought she was emotionally needy, a brat and engaged in self-destructive behaviours for attention but then through the power of self-loathing I realised "...uh oh. I don't like Mae because Mae is _me_ ." I guess in a way it's interesting to see yourself reflected in a character like Mae because it makes you aware of some of your flaws and struggles and how your behaviour might look to an outsider, but also that sometimes it might not be as bad as you're catastrophizing. Navel gazing over. I love NitW even if they did Alec Holowka really dirty
So it was about my third playthrough when it finally hit me that Mae's discussion on the couch about her dissociative episodes, and how everything became "just shapes", were a meta commentary on the game itself. That the art style in the game wasn't merely an artistic choice but was also a narrative one, because, like the game she describes in that scene, the characters here aren't real, their dialog was all made up by writers, and the art style is very much simple shapes and colors. In hindsight it seemed rather obvious and I felt dumb for taking that long to realize that, but still...very meta, indeed.
That was a really great, very in-depth video! Regarding a remastered version you mentioned towards the end, I don't see the point of releasing one, as the game still looks, plays and runs perfectly fine. I do, however, wish they made a patch allowing us to play the guitar minigame from the main menu. There's just not enough opportunity to do that! (And as for NitW2, I don't recall if you mentioned that video by Wolf Godwin before, but man, does it look amazing!)
Im glad you didnt bag on mae too hard for failing and quitting college. Im from a town like hers and whether its something in the water or just similar circumstances the vast majority of us just cant complete college. Believe it or not yet many of those same people have no problem giving four years to the military or more. The military is preferable to college. Let that sink in. In my graduating class I know over 50 who joined the military two even died in Iraq but only about 6 (myself included) who could successfully navigate college. We need more options.
One little detail i love about Greg's defense of Mae at the end is that the game typically censors swears by just writing Eff. Like shes probably actually saying the word in the world of nitw. But when Greg is threatening Eide, it goes full comic style censoring, so Greg was using some very powerful language
So, mae says that everyone and everything became like shapes to her instead of people and whatnot…is this connected to the simpler art style of the game too? Because if you look at all the characters, they’re all rather simple shapes and such, so would the art style be a thematic choice along with obviously just being a really good art style? Idk just a thought but also I couldn’t word this as well as I wanted to
