For many years I slept under a poncho whilst serving in the British army. when done right ( with the right sleeping bag ) was really comfortable. A very useful piece of kit.
I purchased this pack in July 22 and found that the zipper for the bedroll has been updated to have two zippers. To reduce the drag on the zippers I ran a piece of paraffin to lubricate the zipper. I use the paraffin on all my zippers on packs. It not only helps waterproof the zippers, but also lubricates the zippers. I love the flexibility of the pack in how you can tailor for each trip need. I also purchased spray to assist the water repellency. Love the poncho as well except for the color, but it is well made and has multi uses. Overall, I agree with the review, it's a tad heavy buy built like a tank and totally adjustable for my needs.
Luke, I've been watching you since you had 1.5K subscribers and you have always provided REAL reviews. This one is a good example. Happy to see your channel is continuing to thrive and grow. Looking forward to your 4x4 adventures. Thanks.
He should say it however he wants to say it; it's his video. But people probably give him a hard time for saying "pouring THE rain," not "the pouring rain," or just "pouring rain." Everyone says "pouring rain," just not "pouring THE rain," but who cares. We all speak differently.
Look how young you are.. I've been watching you for a long time. You are super charismatic and like your views on just about everything in the future. Insane.2024wow you've come a long way.
I have heard a lot of hikers poo poo the poncho, however with "tie out points" the poncho is a great addition! That makes it a multi-use item - shelter or personal rain gear.
The idea of the split waist straps is so one section goes over your hip bone, the lower goes under. So as to be done up tight without undue pressure ON your hip bone and without squeezing your waist Thus the reason it is adjustable in height. You are running it too high. Try it again "over" your hips. You may be even more impressed!
I have the Explorer 4000 and I love it! I've hiked 140 of the Pinhoti trail with it and it held up great. Only issue I had with the Explorer 4000 was the bottom shelf ripped out in one corner by the zipper inside, not a big deal. Great to the point videos!
I was pretty much sold when you pulled the gear sling out of the bottom. I have a Kelty that I have used exactly once that is going to be replaced by this or the 5500. Probably the 5500. I figured I'd watched enough of your reviews that I needed to sub ... thanks for all the work you put in to doing this for us.
Firm believer in a poncho when it rains. A pack cover doesn't keep any of the padding dry which can add several pounds of weight when wet. Nice review.
Hey Luke! I've commented on your videos before and have been subscribed for a year or longer, and I just wanted to say thanks for uploading videos as often as you do. I enjoy your content and after every video I watch I either learn something new or appreciate something more or learn to appreciate something. I love your love for the outdoors. It truly is a beautiful piece God added into this world. I really like you and you seem like one of the nicest, genuine people out there. Stay that way because it's hard to find and people appreciate it when to do find it. Your an inspiration to a lot of people and you've been a huge one to me. Sorry for the long comment. I just really really love you, your channel, and it's content. Thanks! God Bless You Luke!
Hey Clayton, thank you very much for your kind words! I appreciate them and I appreciate you as well. It's good people like yourself that has made this channel what it is and what it is going to be. Happy Holidays to you, thanks again. - Luke
Hey want you to know your videos are well done, clean and honest. I (and I suspect many others) appreciate this. Well done sir! I will continue to respect your opinion when you review and enjoy your channel.
I prefer the use of a large poncho over me and the pack to promote air flow. Rain suits just get so soaked no matter how breathable they are. Plus, you can use the poncho as a tarp/vestibule etc. I like gear that has multiple uses. Seems like a very nice pack for the money. I would probably take off some of the neoprene sleve thingys to cut down on weight. not sure they are that useful. Nice review. Nice look on the video too. Very sharp!
I have been looking for a new pack for a while now. I have been using Kelty packs with my back country backpacking regular being the Redwing 50 (the older model). I have used that pack over hundreds of miles and it has been great. However, I took it on a 5 day trip in the Shenandoah wilderness and it was a STRETCH on space. I really had to pack it full and cut some quality of life gear. I think this is going to be my next big purchase to enable some longer trips. Thanks so much for this review it has sealed my decision on the Teton Mountain Adventurer.
I just ordered this pack and the TETON Sports LEEF Lightweight Mummy Sleeping Bag. Looking forward to doing some fall/winter camping this year here in Colorado. I'm hoping the 2 compression straps on the frontside of the pack are good enough to strap my snowboard in. I only wish there was more of a MOLLE capability on this pack as I have several modules I'd like to add.
Awesome review! I have the Teton Grand 5500 pack. I love it, 90 liters. Lot of space and very comfortable. Plus has the poncho like this pack does. These 2 packs are almost the same, just the one your reviewing is just a little smaller. Have a great day. Love your videos. Jeremy.
Hi Luke, awesome review, here's a funny little story, I ordered this the other day, while watching the other overnight video, late last night I thought it sounded pretty familiar, so i started digging around my pole barn, and I found this pack, so I had to cancel the order lol, I have tons of packs all over the barn, categorized and neat of course, and i also have a catalog of all my gear just like you, I was wondering if this has happened to you, that you forgot you had something and you ordered another one unknowingly. -Jake
I'm glad to see you reviewing some Teton Sports gear. I've been a customer of theirs for a few years and was curious to see what you thought of the products. I think you gave an honest review and I agree with just about everything you said (good and bad). I think overall, Teton makes great packs for the money, and I would recommend them to any beginner or intermediate level backpacker on a budget. I must admit, that zipper does look like a pain in the butt!
It's "pouring rain" here in Alabama today. I just ordered this off of Amazon, really excited about the purchase! Thank you for the exceptional video and review! p.s. 8 Osprey fan boys do not approve this video.
The price is great for this pack from what Luke showed. I was going to buy a 65L Osprey , but now I might buy this. If anyone has an Osprey , please chime in , Thanks
why are the pack covers and ponchos always orange or yellow ? come on pack makers help us out here od green or black would make more people happy ...just a thought
very cool review! Good to know that you don't have to spend hundreds and hundreds of dollars to get a quality backpack to get started at this great sport
I bought the 5500 based on this review and loved it. Highly recommend for the price. The only criticism I have is that it's not as sturdy as an external frame....but that's not entirely fair. For the money, I'd be hard pressed to name a better substitute. This pack is an incredible value.
It definitely looks to be on the lower end of quality and durability, but for the price, it's probably an excellent bag for someone on a budget who is hoping to get into backpacking. Thank you for the video review
There several useful features this pack is missing I.e. outside hydration blather shelve, multiple large hip belt pockets brain compartment conversion to fanny pack to name a few.....just keeping it real....tip panchos don't work well in heavy brush country .... but not bad for $137...if you're on a budget.....I would not say it's not nearly as good as my Osprey Xenith which cost a little less than twice as much....
Luke, you should try to get your hands on a Seek Outside pack to test. If you're not familiar, it's a hybrid of sorts between an internal and external frame pack. Lots of other interesting design features.
Yeah I got this for a backpacking trip I'm going on but I already had an issue the day I got it which was today. I am a bigger guy but most all other backpacks fit me fine but with this they did not give enough slack so I can barely get it to clip around me, Lucky for me though upon calling Teton they surprisingly have a Waist Extender. I just hope it gets here before my backpacking trip with mail and such running super slow and everything.
The backpack looks very good and price is great for what you get I had never heard of this brand before. Btw that Jääkäri puukko on your pack is one heck of a knife... you will enjoy it for sure.👍
It looks like the orange zipper pocket on the left side would fit a pistol in it. Just a thought. Also how’s the swing on this backpack fully loaded. Looks like Susie’s red one.
What is the pack material? 420D, 600D? packcloth? Cordura? ripstop? Curious design for the sleeping bag compartment zipper to have it covered from the elements when the pack itself is not waterproofed and is intended to covered by the supplied poncho. Yet the access zippers to the main body front and side are not covered?
Would love to see your review on the Teton Explorer 4000 ... 65 ltr back pack. This was my first backpack and I'm very curious on your review on this pack...
What do you think of the Explorer? I'm a bit hesitant to get it because of the extra weight and I really like the features on this one based on this review.
Great review, I’ve been looking at it for a while now and this review helped me pull the trigger on buying it so thanks for the money save! Quick question though, do they make a generic pack rain cover?
I apologize ahead of time in defense of the company and their marketing department is they were trying to show the backpack water is not an issue there they were just trying to show the backpack so you can't show the back backup is covered up with the poncho
DM's Productions I'm from California and that's about as un-southern as it gets and people say it there all the time. I think sometimes Luke says "it's pouring the rain" which is maybe a little more uncommon and possibly what the people were referring to.
What camera are you filming with? Excellent quality! Excellent video. My wife just went on her first backpacking trip with my son and loved it but wants her own pack and now I wanna upgrade!
Can you recommend a backpack that is similar in size/customizability, but is maybe 50% more expensive but better quality/less downsides? Shopping for a backpack is difficult for the newbie 😂 This backpack needs to be sturdy for living rough in an urban environment. Thank you.
I will be honest with you own 5 different 5.11 bags and I would not take them out over this pack. This has been my only backpacking bag and outdoor adventures are far more rugged than urban. However if you don't like the look I say go 5.11, they have some great durable urban bags to choose from.
would this be a good hiking bag to take on the Appalachian Trail the 4000 or do you think the 3400 it would be good enough which one is better thank you
Man thank you your videos are very helpful for people on a budget am doing a long distance hike next year about 1200 miles called the ice age trail so what cheap pack you recommend?
Love your reviews. Thank you! I'm looking to buy packs for my wife and for my 14 year old daughter. They are interested in joining me on hiking/camping trips. Considering the Teton Sports Mountain Adventurer 4000 or the Scout 3400... Which might you recommend?
great pack! you can not overload this pack also you can not use the side pocket. You have to adjust the shoulder straps exactly ,and i do not think you should go hiking with this pack more than 4 hours without a break
I really love the look of this pack but I'm getting the Teton grand 5500 (90 liter) for the extra space. Good video, man. Would you consider the adventurer for a long term backpacking trip during winter?
Manuel Siliezar Bedpad, the closed cell type might be much more comfortable than a tent. Could put the poncho there if rolled up, kinda like that idea better and it would deploy faster from there. Put first aid kit in the brain.
The poncho color is for aiding search and rescue. Thanks for the paraffin tip.
Luke, I've been watching you since you had 1.5K subscribers and you have always provided REAL reviews. This one is a good example. Happy to see your channel is continuing to thrive and grow. Looking forward to your 4x4 adventures. Thanks.
I guess it is kind of off topic but does anybody know a good website to stream newly released movies online?
@Mitchell Bennett Flixportal :)
@Rylan Raylan Thanks, signed up and it seems like they got a lot of movies there :D I really appreciate it!
@Mitchell Bennett glad I could help :D
I just got mine for 87.00 on Amazon.
Thanks for your video.
Adam
"pouring rain" Whoever gave you trouble over that phrase has the problem because everyone says that.
Larry Kramer I agree we say it all over Ohio. A very common phrase.
He should say it however he wants to say it; it's his video. But people probably give him a hard time for saying "pouring THE rain," not "the pouring rain," or just "pouring rain." Everyone says "pouring rain," just not "pouring THE rain," but who cares. We all speak differently.
Larry Kramer It’s raining cats and dogs. ⛈🐈🐕🐈🐕🐈🐕
That true, we in tropic have it 'the pouring rain' almost everyday
@Logan Decker Amazing that, with so many people stuck inside, that the TV just keeps playing the same crap. I'll try it.
Look how young you are.. I've been watching you for a long time. You are super charismatic and like your views on just about everything in the future. Insane.2024wow you've come a long way.

Firm believer in a poncho when it rains. A pack cover doesn't keep any of the padding dry which can add several pounds of weight when wet. Nice review.
The internal grab-handles are something I have never seen before. Very interesting idea.
That's different for sure. I like it! - Luke
Only saw this now, follow your Teton tent review June 2022. Sweet review. Poncho! Very nice
"Pouring rain" - common phrase in the UK!
Phillip John Evans same here in California.
Phillip John Evans same everywhere in different countries
I fold back my sleeping bag compartment flap where the zipper is back so its smooth for me

First time seeing you without the sunglasses! Finally get to see the full face. Better, in my opinion 👍🏻
Hey want you to know your videos are well done, clean and honest. I (and I suspect many others) appreciate this. Well done sir! I will continue to respect your opinion when you review and enjoy your channel.
I love Teton and their products, amazing quality for the price!! Great packs and sleeping bags!
I think it's technically 65+10L because of the design of the top of the bag.
I have the Explorer 4000, and it's definitely not 65L. At LEAST 75L.
we say "pouring rain" here in eastern canada
Zips for sleeping bag compartments are hard to operate on most every pack that has them.
I prefer the use of a large poncho over me and the pack to promote air flow. Rain suits just get so soaked no matter how breathable they are. It was really helpful..you have explained it so well..I was struggling to pack it effectively and your explanation helped me pack well.
That’s a great deal, definitely not ultralight, but well equipped. Looks very comfortable. Thanks Luke
*_"Luke,...The Force 👋 is with you young Hikerwan. But you're not a Hiker 🧗♂️Yet"_*
The 3400 is one damn fine pack.
The addition of a poncho is actually a great idea.
Ty sir for all the videos you post, i love watching your gear reviews and bush craft videos
Excellent review, one of the best gear reviews I have watched.

I'm from Kentucky so I say it all the time. Love being from the South. Good review brother and God bless.

For those looking to purchase a "bug out bag," this will work perfectly well and is affordable.
The price is great for this pack from what Luke showed.
I was going to buy a 65L Osprey , but now I might buy this. If anyone has an Osprey , please chime in , Thanks
Bryan Resch I have a osprey atmos ag. I would highly recommend it. Most comfortable pack I have.
why are the pack covers and ponchos always orange or yellow ? come on pack makers help us out here od green or black would make more people happy ...just a thought
just bought one tonight then found this review.... great video.... above and beyond ;)
very cool review! Good to know that you don't have to spend hundreds and hundreds of dollars to get a quality backpack to get started at this great sport
back to the drawing board for TETON engineer to straighten that bottom zipper. well done on the side zipper.
I bought the 5500 based on this review and loved it. Highly recommend for the price.

$100 on amazon currently and still as great and functional (also includes the poncho tarp!).
Got mine for $84 and I feel like I won the lottery.

Yea, we say "it's pouring rain," in NYC
Nice! Thanks! You prefer this one or Granite Gear Crown? Have a nice day!!
The backpack looks very good and price is great for what you get I had never heard of this brand before. Btw that Jääkäri puukko on your pack is one heck of a knife... you will enjoy it for sure.👍
That sleeping bag compartment zipper is quite anoying... I'm sold *BIG TIME* to Osprey Packs! 😜. They are pretty closed from perfection!
That truly is full featured and I guess for the weight that's pretty amazing. With all those features I would have thought it weighed more.
This backpack is very similar to the Deuter ACT range. Good backpacks!
I believe this is going to be the one i buy for my first pack! Thanks again Luke!
Thanks for helping me make my decision.
I was about sold up until the sleeping bag compartment part. I don't have the patience to play like that with something so simple.
on the weist belt the side without pocket it is for the rock climbing equipement.
Thank you. Ordering one now.
It looks like the orange zipper pocket on the left side would fit a pistol in it. Just a thought. Also how’s the swing on this backpack fully loaded. Looks like Susie’s red one.
Still like the pack? Except for the lower zipper of course.
Thnx for the review. I will be looking into this pack more. Great vid👍

Pouringor not, hopefully the rain will come to your part of the country my friend.Nice review!
It has arrived my friend! Thank goodness! We are now back into a rain pattern.
Hope you are well.

Can u review a ultra light sleeping bag for winter?
I say pouring rain in Southern California
The Fish Kid same.
do one on the granite gear backpack
Great review. I'd love to see them change the lower compartment zipper too but would also like some earth tone colors. atb Opal.
Earth Tones is a great idea Opal. - Luke
like your review on the pack I live in Utah were we have real mountains and we say poring rain to good job
Wonder if Teton still offers this deal? I don't think they do.
In New Zealand English we say pouring rain
Is this something you would recommend for a thru hike going sobo?
I have the 3400 and they say it's 55l but I doubt it. lol and also weighs in at 5.25 lbs
we say pouring rain up in michigan too. I didn't know that was weird.
It's said in Australia too.
Colorado too......maybe its weird that there is somewhere it isn't being said.
DM's Productions I'm from California and that's about as un-southern as it gets and people say it there all the time. I think sometimes Luke says "it's pouring the rain" which is maybe a little more uncommon and possibly what the people were referring to.
DM's Productions we say pouring rain in South East Pennsylvania too.
What camera are you filming with? Excellent quality! Excellent video. My wife just went on her first backpacking trip with my son and loved it but wants her own pack and now I wanna upgrade!
How would I know if the back support straps are the correct length for my torso and such? I'm 5 ft 7
Can a 1l Nalgene bottle easily fit in the mesh pockets? Some packs have very small mesh pockets making it almost impossible to get them in.
However if you don't like the look I say go 5.11, they have some great durable urban bags to choose from.
love those Teton packs!!! Great products!
Sting said "I have stood here before inside the pouring rain". Everyone says that.
would this be a good hiking bag to take on the Appalachian Trail the 4000 or do you think the 3400 it would be good enough which one is better thank you
I hope someone answers this cause I'm wondering the same thing.
I snagged this pack for $84 and feel like I hit the lottery.
Man thank you your videos are very helpful for people on a budget am doing a long distance hike next year about 1200 miles called the ice age trail so what cheap pack you recommend?
I’m buying this one. They also have a 5500 Grand backpack, but people tend to say not to go above 65l on long hikes/trails.
Long term review please
The Teton 4000 is better than Teton 3400? The 3400 I see you have goods evaluations in reviews and ranks. Tks for video!
Thanks for the review. 👍🏻😁👍🏻
They gotta fix that zippering on the bottom dam.. still an amazing pack
How would you compare this to the TETON Sports Explorer 4000,
Luke, how do you like the Gregory Baltoro?
Will you be testing it any soon?
Love your reviews. Thank you! I'm looking to buy packs for my wife and for my 14 year old daughter. They are interested in joining me on hiking/camping trips. Considering the Teton Sports Mountain Adventurer 4000 or the Scout 3400... Which might you recommend?
Can you swap the pouch to the other side in the waist belt?
Another awesome video !
Thank you Western! - Luke
great pack! you can not overload this pack also you can not use the side pocket. You have to adjust the shoulder straps exactly ,and i do not think you should go hiking with this pack more than 4 hours without a break
is this a good option for a backpacking travel ?
I really love the look of this pack but I'm getting the Teton grand 5500 (90 liter) for the extra space. Good video, man. Would you consider the adventurer for a long term backpacking trip during winter?
I think the Adventurer could fit that bill very well especially with that increase in space (90 later).
- Luke
how strong is the bottom neoprene sleeve? is it possible to attach a tent and it will hold? does it look like it will easy break?
Manuel Siliezar Bedpad, the closed cell type might be much more comfortable than a tent. Could put the poncho there if rolled up, kinda like that idea better and it would deploy faster from there. Put first aid kit in the brain.
My man I wish you would have wear your backpack and Poncho to see how it look like
