for #1: I have a "Coleman' brand wide mouth thermos with a handle. It is tall and has a wide opening which is great for a woman. The container itself is solid (not see-through) so discrete disposal is possible. Before I use it, I make sure I have the toilet tissue I will need ready (as in torn off for the correct amount I will need) and nearby, I unscrew the lid and hold onto the handle to ensure it doesn't accidentally get knocked over, I hold that handle the entire time until the lid is back on. Used paper goes into a trash bag. The container itself does not leak. I have used this technique for over 4 years. #2: for the 'emergencies', a 5 gallon bucket, topped with a pool noodle then a biodegradable bag that fits over top, otherwise, public restrooms or dig a cat hole when out in the wild. Super simple!

I found an empty 750ml or 1 liter liquid laundry detergent bottle with a molded handle on the side the best container. There is a plastic spout inside which you pry off and now you can hold the built-in handle firmly, the opening is a wide circle, and the cap is large and easy to grip and turn (even for older women or people with hand injuries). No leaks.
Bonus! If the detergent was scented that fresh laundry smell will linger for months in the bottle. Finally, if you need a new bottle just look around any launderette your washing your clothes in for empties - free is always the best price.

As a female I use almost the exact same jar - came from the tinned fruit section. And yeah, sometimes I use it when I don’t want to leave my room in the middle of the night 😆
I’m voting for a how-to video, because newbies have genuine curiosity. Oh, and by the way, a small supply of appropriate cat litter makes all the difference for emergency number twos in a bag - no smells & buys you some time if you can’t get rid of it right away! Keep up the good work Eric 👍

@@squakke I use a one that’s small granules made from plant material that I’ve used for my cats for years, but was amazed how well it worked for my needs - I won’t go into details 🤣! You need something that’s small enough to encase it properly, so I don’t know how effective those crystal types would be. Horse pellets collapse if it’s moist enough, otherwise I’m not too sure about it making a good seal. Maybe the clay type would be effective. I use Max’s Cat Litter, if you happen to be in Australia 👍 Happy pooing 😄

I am an older woman and can't always wait to find a public restroom. I have a 3-1/2 gallon bucket with a screw-in lid, which is both watertight and airtight and prevents any odor. Separating the liquids from the solids is KEY for easy disposal, so I use a wide-mouth plastic jar placed against the inside front wall of the bucket as a urine diverter. I place a plastic trash bag in the bucket in back of the jar for solids; then just use pool noodle pieces slit lengthwise to fit over the bucket rim for a seat. The urine diverter is an empty laundry detergent jar so it is opaque, and I can dump it outside on the ground or in a public toilet, then rinse and re-use the jar. The trash bag containing the solids I just dump in the trash can at the gas station or wherever --- it is more or less the same as a throwaway diaper. However, it really is essential to separate liquid and solid ---- otherwise you have sewage, which is heavy and can leak, etc. I keep the bucket inside a small wood crate, which makes it very stable and no danger of it tipping over. Yes, it does take up space; but I can also use it as a stool and I really HAVE to have it.

excellent ideas for small van living. I like having a pee container even in the house since I share one bathroom. Walmart sells its own brand of epsom salts in a 4 kg container with a wide mouth and a sturdy handle. I put a line of painters tape vertically down one side and painted the container white to hide the contents. Then I removed the tape so I have a view of how full it is. Works wonderfully. Pee is a nice nitrogen fertilizer tho diluting it is better for most plants.

Hi Eric, thanks for all your videos. To comment on the Toilet one, we use similar options for bathroom needs when camping with our van. However we decided that the jar format is good for both of us. Also I drop a small amount of white vinegar inside the container before or after use. This prevent odor from building up over night (1 table spoon can neutralize 1 litre of urine,). I also have a medium size spray bottle filled with bio soap and water to spray inside the container as cleaning method. We use it also to wash hands or when we have only little dishes to clean. Very economical on soap and water also.

Finally, I've been waiting for the new videos!!! I use pee funnel that was connected to a silicone hose that is attached to a 5L container because its for me and my 2 kids. I generously spray the pee funnel with a mixture o bleach, soap and water to "flush " and to disinfect after each use. I secure the container to make sure it won't get spilled while driving, and the hose is long enough for us to use it with ease. It doesn't smell even after 24 hours. The bleach and soap solutions helps to eliminate the odor. As for number 1, we use a collapsible toilet. It's not glamorous, but when the kids gotta go, they need to go soon!! I hope you continue making videos!

Another great educational video from you. Thank you for sharing your simple solutions to everyday problems. Great to see you again! As folks get older, they tend to need to use the restroom more often overnight. I have to use the restroom at least twice nightly - sometimes for #2. For me, it made sense to invest in a small collapsable toilet. I found one on Amazon that was inexpensive, compact, and fits nicely into a small bag. I use a small ice cream bucket to hold toilet paper and commode bags (which I double up during use, but pull only one out for disposal as long as there isn't a small leak - i've never had a leak yet). The system fits nicely into a little niche in the back of my car. If needed, I could use the toilet system to hold a trash bag for garbage during the day, but I don't usually take it out of it's storage spot until night time. Your videos are always easy to understand and you have smart solutions! Thank you for making the videos!

Great video as usual, covering all the important points!
For ladies, there is the "she-wee" (and similar products), which don't take up much space, and mean you can pee into the more common narrow-mouth bottle which is easier to carry, store, empty and replace. It takes a bit of practice to learn to use properly, but a great invention all the same!
And instead of toilet paper to clean up after a pee, there is a product called a "culo" - a silver-impregnated cloth (so it doesn't smell & stays hygienic for several uses) that was designed for hiking, and just as useful for van living.
To clean up after a #2 in the outdoors, you can use a bottle of water with a bidet attachment instead of toilet paper. The bidet attachment is similar to the lid of a sports water bottle or the lid of a toilet cleaner bottle (for a sideways squirt) and fits on an ordinary small water bottle. (You might want to use a bit of toilet paper to dry off afterwards, but it will be cleaner and you can use less of it, so less unpleasant to carry away.)
(This won't work in a makeshift toilet in the van of course, where you don't want liquid in with your solids!)

It's important to dispose of pee 100 feet from any rivers and lakes to avoid contaminating them and hurting any people or animals.
Great video. Short people can save a little space by using a 3 gallon bucket instead of 5 as others mentioned (plus pool noodle section to pad the rim, and bags to cover the assembly during use). You can store litter and tp inside, and use the bucket for other purposes.

nr 1: funnel and plastic (vinegar) bottle with handle. Rinse it with water and soap, good for months. nr 2, public toilet, but if emergency: just in the bin on top of the waste: without liquids, the smell is not too bad. Knot in the bag and dispose immediately. Diet is a huge factor: when I was still vegetarian/vegan: I had so much more waste. Now full-on carnivore: less waste and way better under control (1 + 2).

For a female pee jug I find a wide mouth, cleaned, mayonnaise jar is good, but does not have a really watertight seal. (I like the idea of the masking tape cover leaving an uncovered slit to see how full it is - thanks to the person who posted that!) In our Sienna it rides in the cubby/armrest where the 3rd row seat used to be (which is now a bedside cubby) which also holds the silver-impregnated cloths. For emergency #2, I carry the Potette-brand liners that are made for a toddler’s portable potty seat - they have an absorbent pad in the bottom (but I don’t pee in them) and the handles tie pretty tight. We stow it,and the dog’s poo bags as needed (we hike in areas without trash cans), in a BLM poop tube: 12” of 4in ABS sewer pipe fitted with adapters and RV black tank waste valve caps. Completely odor-tight! It fits under the front passenger seat until we get to a gas station with a trash can. We don’t do van life but we like boondock, no-trace camping.

I use an 8-cup Stasher bowl when tent camping and i don't want to get out of the tent at night for #1. It's a good size to hold up against myself, seals well in case it gets knocked over afterwards, but has a flat bottom so it can and does stay upright. No TP, just a Kula Cloth.

ooohhh. That canister looks like it would work well for 1 & 2.
When I was passing through a more urban area, when it was inconvenient (like night time), I used the 1 containers, and had a specific small backpack so when I walked to a toilet when convenient, I could dump the contents discretely.
And since they were cheap, from water jugs in the first place, when it was time to replace them it was easy.
Anyways, I feel that canister itself would work for 2 in any e situation.
Last step, simply a set storage spot for them!
Hopefully I get this new van soon! I'm excited to be able to get out and travel again!!!

A "bivvy loo" is the luxurious version of the collapsable bucket. Nearly as comfortable as the home standard for nr2. I always recommend to double the bags for safety reasons. Using a pop-up tent adds convenience - also for showering and clothing purpose in flat roof vans.

Thanks for this! Wife and I currently travel for weeks or on month long road-trips in a Prius C and my main (and almost only concern) is bathrooms (especially #2s). We're going to be upgrading to a small van and have been considering portable toilets for a while. Life on the open road would be amazing if it wasn't for the constant, daily need for washrooms. ;)

I got a good laugh at the "fire hydrent" comment! I've had to use the pee bottle often over the years, and one thing I learned about them is to choose one that is not too large. That way, you are not tempted to let it sit for a while before emptying it. I like Gatorade bottles myself. Chrome at the Vancity Vanlife channel is a big advocate for the Luggable Loo bucket that can be found at Canadian Tire and similar stores around. It's a running joke, and he even has a t-shirt that says "I poo in a bucket"! When not in use, he uses it to store toilet paper and other cleaning supplies, as well as garbage bags.

I have used the Gatorade for a while. It’s just that the volume is not so much and the risk that the bottle tilt while driving is scary.

Great ideas, Eric! Thank you for an informative video.
Why use toilet paper at all? Horrible stuff. Use water instead and a small cloth to wipe yourself dry. Wash the cloth occasionally. Use a 'personal hygiene water bottle' or a 'bidet sprayer bottle' from Amazon or any Hospital supply shop. The nozzle is meant to give you a strong spray when you squeeze. This cleans well. No paper mess or waste.
Smell you say? Get a Bernzomatic propane torch (auto igniter type). Attach a propane bottle to it, and flame it inside the van in the air to burn off any gases. No smells. This is why they light candles in bathrooms. This torch is useful for creme brulee, burning off old cobwebs (don't kill spiders), and to light BBQs and campfires. Handy thing to have.
However, I would still take a small porta-potty with me. You can add a bag inside to throw away #2, and just use it for #1. Dump that on trees, it is urea fertilizer. I would add a small box outside my van and keep the #2 there if necessary till I got to a dumpster. Your system of sink pan - how do you sit in it? You have to squat over it, not pleasant. You can also get a portable Loo which is similar but more comfortable and folds flat.
That canoe ride in the Everglades looks enviable. What a place!!

We used Thetford Curve toilet with Thetford Campachem. I specifically ran the test, not cleaning the toilet for 10 days despite the heat and time whatever came out was just a deodorant smelling green water. It broke all number two and neutralized pee. And I can assure you, my sh!& 💩 is not holy. but I’m not insistent on anybody. Everybody is different with different demands but honestly, I prefer to use public bathroom if I have to during my trips.

Hi Eric , I’m getting ready to start my Bucket List road trips. I currently have a 1994 Mazda B3000 truck with cap on it. My plan is to add your a bed like your design and some of your other ideas.
My first trip will be this Fall, I’ll travel from Ste Anne Manitoba into US and go west to Washington then down the coast to Southern California, over to Arizona north thru Utah, WY and Montana. Hopefully 4-5 weeks. My main interest is foraging seafood and surf fishing along the coast and hiking and mushrooming the interior states on the way home.
I’ll likely take my 10’ pack canoe or my SOT 10’ kayak. A trip like this should help me learn what I need to adjust for my next trip to Maritimes.
Oh…I’m from Kipawa Quebec but now living in Manitoba.
Do you do any foraging or fishing on your trips?
    Steve (68yrs)
