This was literally around the corner from where i live. The lunatic cut his own throat after slashing up his wife, a man who tried to help and a police officer. Paramedics spent a long time stabilising the criminal. Why did they bother saving him, he made his choice.

It's only a matter of time that someone reoffends unless they are rehabilitated. Only very rarely are people rehabilitated 'on their own' from sole confinement in prison.

They legally have to. "Innocent until proven guilty." Considering how often the wrong person gets arrested, it's an important distinction to have. Sure in this case it seems obvious, but still important to leave it to those who know all the details.
