VIDEO INTRODUCTION:
With a rising number of startups and the presence of many existing players in the industry, customer acceptance of home delivery services is growing by leaps and bounds. Living in the current era, we are surrounded by an increasing number of eCommerce platforms that offer almost everything and deliver all of these things right to our doorsteps.
It is true that most of our daily needs are satisfied by the old and the newer players that are dominating the home delivery services, but for some of our daily needs, which are always in demand, like fresh milk, and groceries, we often find a crunch, even if it is for a specific product. This is why many startups have solely dedicated their businesses to meet the growing requirements, thereby aiming to achieve a demand-supply equilibrium. One such startup that aims to take care of the fresh supply of milk and more is Milkbasket.

As a delivery executive in Delhi I would like to share my experience with this it's not 3 hrs part time job it's more than 5 hrs job
Point no. 1 it's not easy to deliver 60 packets
Point no. 2 it's not easy to carry the weight of around 60* average 2 kg
It's just one side story
Earning 5k is nothing in metro cities with this kind of hardwork so to say this is a kind of an abuse to the unemployed youth of our country sorry to say the truth but that is a reality hope u understand. You will witness the fall of this company very soon 🙏

What you said is true.... This is exploitation...
This is what is creating what I call povertification of our country.
All these platforms are slowly but surely squeezing labour.
Look around n see the state of these delivery staff.
It's now heading to contactors. To reduce cost even more.
When more n more people are pushed to lower income .... Don't expect economy to boom.
I don't feel this is a great model. But a damning one for our people n economy

Sir,
In back 2021 during lockdown me and my friends started e-commerce in my town . We don't had to many people to work for delivery . So we decided to do delivery work also at between 4-5:30 pm and rest of day we took orders because we don't have time to do for whole day because we are students preparing for JEE exam at that time . The idea limited only on paper and meeting only , at the time of execution families refused it because fear of corona at that time. I live in a gated society where bb daily and mb are the two competitors for supplying milk. My dad used to convey me to order milk through milk basket than bb daily because they used to supply milk through a blue plastic pouch which can be used as a dustbin cover later😂 I started to see more other people doing the same and this lead to closure of bb daily service in my gated society due to less daily order as people preferred to reduce the cost of buying dustbin cover also mb sold each milk packets 3 to 4 Rs less than bb daily
Ur Father destroyed bb in that society 🤣

I apologize for any confusion caused. Please note that the cost of fuel is typically not factored directly into the delivery charges. Personal opinion : Sometimes, in order to make your case, you just make up numbers. Even while comparing there is bias towards the case. E.g. for this video, salaries for dark store full time employee and milkbasket full time employee.
Also to add to that, in order to achieve the order numbers, the radius of the delivery addresses from the house will increase which will decrease the number of orders per delivery employee. Which I think is also a factor to consider
I also feel that about number like these apps are gonna work on metro cities and I don't think that anyone is gonna work for 4-5 deliver 60 package for just 4-5 k it's too low and the imaginary salary of 30 k for dark store is too high
We did. But numbers are exactly what we found. Cant make them up so easily. Source say what they say. This is the closest we can get to the comparison of different philosophies.
Yes you didn't but you can also find sources where they do make it up, it isn't exactly trust worthy is it? Can you please provide the sources of your information?

I don't know now but when they started there was a big issue that I saw in my society faced by them, many neighbors face the issue that their packages were stolen by someone else or Dogs damaged their parcels, because of this many faces trust issues with the company and also no one knows if they actually delivered the parcel or someone stolen from outside their flat. One point which i dont think is mentioned here is that milk basket supplies to societies/aparment complexes/gated communities only. they do not deliver to individual houses. so the way this helps many people in the society place orders together, and the delivery is further optimized as the delivery location is the same for a large batch of orders.
Great analysis, I think Country delight also follows a similar model but milkbasket really used the market insight of daily milk purchase to its advantage
Your videos are very informative and this is the best youtube channel I have found so far.

In theory, this looks great. But there are some practical problems here. Eg. Stickinesss is a big issue. Majority of the days, customers just order milk. And associate the app with only milk delivery. It is very hard to cross sell other products.

I'm still confused. Why can the Milk Basket delivery guy make 60 orders/trip while others can only make only 25 orders/trip? There's no change in the storage capacity of the vehicle, or the number of customer orders to be satisfied.
Right
Same question
We used supr daily back in 2021 which is what I studied on, milk basket is doing same thing. Supr daily was acquired by swiggy, if they weren’t they could give competition to MB
I was thinking about the same.
No, you need to have a cash rich co like Reliance backing you, SuprDaily had a distress sale to Swiggy.
HOW ARE YOU GOING TO GIVE ANNUAL INCREMENTS TO THE DELIVERY BOYS? WONT THAT INCREASE THE COST? YOU CANT KEEP THEIR REMUNERATION STATIC. IF YOU DO SO, YOU WILL FACE A LOT OF ATTRITION.
You are doing a commendable job. Very informative video. Thanks a lot
I have never heard of milk basket. I thought it was something of a similar case like zepto, blinkit, etc. But it turned out to be similar to Country Delight. And country delight is something i have heard over the past few years
I don't know how
for other companies the warehouse cost and delivery cost goes up from 30k to 35k but why 17k for full-timers in milk basket.
of course, 5k for part-timers is understandable.
One more thing, the Milk delivery system in India is already stable as there is no delivery cost for milk delivery, and especially in a state like Tamilnadu we are getting additional subsidies for monthly milk subscriptions.
The delivery of monthly subscribed milk is 3 rupees less than the same milk we buy in stores.
So penetrating through this market is tough for milk-basket.
Additionally, a customer will not order some products with milk daily, even if so on average they might order 30 rupees product daily. Why because in price sensitive market like india, people order only once a month for their groceries.
Country delight also uses this same strategy sir. Love your case studies ❤

Hi Ganesh, according to me in the long run startups with scheduled delivery will prevail over "Quick Commerce" startups as I think, Indian consumers are more of cost conservative than being time conservative . Sir, I would love to hear your opinion on this.
Correct, we Indians will choose lower prices over quicker deliveries any day.
It's all game of per capita income . If India grows from low income group to the high income one people will start affording to choose convenience over costs. That's already happening where many people have started choosing subscription models of ott or UA-cam over free but advertising heavy model of free consumption. Even premium subscription of UA-cam is on rise. Only those will survive who have deep pockets enough to keep experimenting thru such process of constant evolution of new technologies, innovative business models as per changing technologies and changing public perception due to changing economic environment of the economy. Deep pockets is the only saviour in this unending long drawn corporate battle of survival. Your ability to raise capital continuously thru all thick and thins is the only big differentiating factor in all this corporate battle. Jio's success story over that of Vodafone idea or anil Amani group teaches you this costly lesson. Bansals of Flipkart had to surrender to Walmart's to take ahead their battle against Amazon. Only innovations and talent aren't enough. Ur financial ability to remain committed to your business venture is the only differential. Even milk basket takeover by reliance retail is the testimony of what I'm trying to convey you. After two decades to be able to serve your high paying customers choosing convenience over costs in higher per capita economic scenario you need to be able to survive that long at first place which is not the game of shallow pockets.
We currently value money over time. So everything is cheap but slow. In countries like usa, they prefer time over money so they try to do everything as fast as possible and burn through money because they sell products with larger margins.
We cannot do that because we sell stuff with low margins.
Thus during inflation, their prices increase making demand low whereas during inflation in India, we keep prices same or don't increase it by much while we make the product using cheaper items.
Ex: To keep mentos price to ₹1, they made mentos smaller.
To keep kitkat price lower, they started using less chocolate cream.
Just see the difference between a kitkat chocolate from UAE, USA and India.
UAE one is expensive but has a LOT of cream, usa one is a bit cheaper while Indian one is very cheap but we have like almost no chocolate around the wafer.

It is a direct delivery from Dairy to Doorstep with no middleman or adulteration.

@@user-vh4mf4ux2m In cities like gurugram (mostly working class like 9-5 PM job), it can happen 30-40k deliveries per day. But in tier 2/3 cities this is a huge number, its like acquiring almost 70-80% customers in tier 2/3 cities which already have local kirana stores within walking distance from their home. It will never work out in these cities. Also they prefer their daily milk from nearby daries/farms (90% in tier 3) and (60% in tier 2). Packaged milk is only for emergency/special day purpose.

Hi Ganesh. First of all, thank you so much for all the efforts you and your team put into making such detailed and informative video case studies. I have been a viewer and follower of Think School for more than two years now!
I have a concern with respect to the case study this time - while it mentions Milk Basket/Reliance cracking "Quick Commerce", the business model of MB (and similarly of BigBasket and Country Delight) isn't quick-commerce but scheduled delivery. This is vastly different from what the likes of Zepto, Dunzo and Blinkit are doing. Quick Commerce is basically addressing the impulse purchase needs of consumers through e-commerce via dark stores. The concept of dark stores is having regular 1000 sft warehouses within local catchments to supply deliveries within 15-20 minutes. Any warehouse that's 15 km away (as mentioned in the case study) and is as large as 60,000 sft is a regular warehouse and not a dark store. And thus, MB doesn't fit into the definition of a quick-commerce company (at least for now, with their current BM). So actually, MB's acquisition by Reliance is its competitive play on Tata's acquisition of BB (much like how Tata acquired 1Mg and Reliance acquired NetMeds).
Saying that I completely agree with your insight of MB's successful strategy of building stickiness with the user through a daily consumable product like milk.
Pardon me for pointing this out! You are doing an amazing job, and I look forward to more such in-depth case studies from the house of Think School 🙏🏼
Sir, according to me in the long run startups with scheduled delivery will prevail over "Quick Commerce" startups as I think, Indian consumers are more of cost conservative than being time conservative . Sir, I would love to hear your opinion on this.
Very true
@@parthlimbani8415 You're quite correct! India has a deep penetration of mom-and-pop retailers that are reachable within 10 minutes by foot, if we consider basic groceries. While Metros (and a few Tier 1 cities) have the disposable income to pay for convenience to offset their impulse needs, the majority of the country doesn't but on the contrary, have more time at hand. Thus, QC would largely remain an ultra-urban phenomenon unless there are innovations in the last mile delivery that could drastically reduce the costs (drone delivery, etc.). However, SD businesses can be made viable even in the deeper parts of the country as they are based on the fundamentals of driving repeat purchases.
If a delivery executive works only 3-4 hrs and delivers 60 orders on average - he has to deliver one order every 3-4 minutes - seems unrealistic.
exactly
Its possible. Given the large volume of orders, the density of deliveries would increase for an area. Like delivering to multiple apartments in a building.
@abhayanaik6429 each delivery boy delivers 60 orders doesn't mean that he'll travel to 60 points. Each order consists of 4 to 5 products so he'll hardly have to travel to 15 points
@@Ducktility makes sense
@@harisonstuart6241 that's not how orders are considered. One order can have multiple products in the basket. One order is usually one transaction or a basket of products. 60 orders would typically mean 60 different customer addresses given the nature of business mentioned.
I believe comparing Dunzo/Blinkit with Milk Basket is not right comparison. Both of them have different business model. So the comparison itself is flawed.
Its 2 different philosophies.

Investment is the key to achieving success with the current pandemic slowing down so many businesses aww
Your content is awesome but i think the back ground music was distractiing. thanks 😁
Good video and simple explanation ❤
One more advantage is that most people prefer delivery in the morning so that missed deliveries during afternoon or evening is avoided.
This delivery model is not always convenient for customers as other apps provide a convience of 15-30 mins delivery which is very imp to be shifted to that app in case of urgent requirements (which can be the case in most scenarios)
And so they can provide milk as well.
As a consumer if I only have to order milk daily instead of paying 149₹/m I'll pay 30₹ extra to a nearby dairy who can provide me same milk that too at the same time.
But competition in this space is a good for customers afterall so I'm happy to see one more option
I just wanted to share some more reasons why I love using Milk Basket for my daily needs. Milk Basket is awesome because it doesn't have a checkout button. You heard me right, no checkout button. You just add the items you want to your cart and that's it. You can keep adding or removing items until midnight, when the cart freezes and you get your order the next day. It's so convenient, trust me.
For example, if I use Big Basket daily and I add some onions to my cart for tomorrow morning, I have to pay for them right away. But what if I change my mind and buy some onions from the market in the evening? Then I have to cancel my Big Basket order and go through all that hassle. But with Milk Basket, I just remove the onions from my cart, and I'm done.
Or what if I need to buy something at 11:58 pm at night? I don't have to wait for OTP or anything like that. I just add them to my cart, and they'll be delivered to me between 5 to 6 am.
Imagine if Amazon did the same thing. Just by adding items to your cart, they would ship them to you the next day. No hassle of checkout or cancelling at all.
This also gives Milk Basket another superpower: the Milk Basket wallet. I always top up my Milk Basket wallet so that I can enjoy this checkout-free experience.
Also, the monthly 149rs fee is deducted from my Milk Basket wallet, which gives Milk Basket a stable income and the money in the wallet is an interest-free loan for them.
Thanks for such a detailed analysis
Future group was also doing the same thing, according to the past it majorly depends on the level of big pockets if something goes wrong.
do a country delight VS milk basket comparison .
Before you said "lets look at the macro factors", the economics part that you explained just before that, was that from micro eco perspective?
Not sure bout other cities but in Hyderabad interestingly Milkbasket customer base is shrinking and people are shifting back to big basket owing to higher monthly subscription charges
