John Lennon on Dick Cavett (Complete show) 2nd Appearance with live Performance

  • May 12th, 1972 John and Yoko talk with and perform for Dick and Shirley McClaine. John defends his use of the word "nigger" for his song "woman is the nigger of the world", in addition to explaining his deportation and custody dilemma.
Shirley McLaine talks out of ass for most of the show, watch her repeatedly praise John and Yoko off camera and be politely dismissed. While being interviewed, she states she has no belief in spirits and paranormal things--which she must have forgotten later in career when she started selling that nonsense. Shirley also demonstrates the lost art of the uncomfortably long hug with Yoko.

That's a pointless remark. Firstly, if someone really wants to kill another human being, they will find a way. Secondly, John would have eventually gotten citizenship, regardless if Nixon got his way.

John came in such a strange package. You first have to transport yourself back to the time he's a product of just to get close to understand where he was coming from. He was so controversial throughout his life. I can't even imagine a song using that word even for a good cause today (2023). I'm not sure if John realized how much a target his "Concepts for change" made him. They wanted to deport him, people burned Beatles records, maniacs showed up at his door..etc. He'll certainly be remembered particularly as a genius creator and performer. Both John and Yoko were moving a mile a minute.

@@brithaddenhadden8383 She's not kind. John was besotted with her because she played the oldest trick in the book that all narcissists play - that mysterious "unavailability". All that "empty". She didn't love him. She proved that when she barged into the song he was doing with Chuck Berry on the Dick Cavat show. She has no talent yet she followed John on stage banging on a tambourine. Then she decided to join in, vocally screeching like a cat in a room full of rocking chairs trying to drown them out with that tuneless screeching kookaburra noise she does.
Take a look at how pissed Chuck Berry was with that selfish cow trying to ruin what John had dreamed of for so long - singing with his Rock n Roll hero. I'm not hateful, just stating the obvious about her completely selfish behaviour. You can have her. She didn't love John, she just hurt him. Look at how she pushed Julian out of his life and even made him give her money for Julian's memorabilia from John. Any decent person would have gone out of their way to make him a gift of those things. Julian is a beautiful person and deserved better. All she wanted was John's money.

Everyone always seems to blame Yoko for taking John away from Julian but lets be honest the neglect and mistreatment of Julian had been going on long before Yoko hit the scene, really Cynthia may had well been a single mother. And to be honest watching this interview it is a bit rich how he basically went all out to find another women's child while he all round neglected his own biological child.

John spent far to much time trying to be a controversial YOKO Activist & this hurt his career as opposed to helping him. Who really wanted to hear anything she had to say, nevermind attempt to sing? Not me. The shows would have been much better had he just come on by himself. You didn't see Linda McCartney attached to Paul's coat tails, at all times, like Yoko did with John. I don't think there was a chance in hell that he would have sang such an offensive song had she not been so annoyingly present & influencing everything he did. The N word is not something that a white man could throw around then or now, in the USA, without causing offense. Gone too soon, that's for sure. It might have been a classic recording had it not been for Yoko getting a live microphone and making stupid noises.
It was a rare shot of John Lennon playing blues doing some kind of ' cat blues ' and Yoko had to make stupid cat noises.

shirley mclaine really impressed me here! what a pure energy
and natural empathy and heart. I recorded some of her words
as samples. john and yoko, so happy to see this next Dick Cavett interview of theirs. I think Shirley, John, and Yoko could have a long and equal discussion
as she was participating in campaigning for McGovern to represent the needed
orientation of government to the service of the people, and not to
anti-human anti-nature corporations and international banks.
    ---
I see the potential relevance here, of the deportation.
Like the U.S. govt. was saying we will either ship you out
or we will kill you/send a christian gun enthusiast slimeball to shoot you
and take the blame and fall.
why would he be such a target of the Establishment?
the same reason as many other activist voices in the 60's 70's
and again today in the 10's of new millennium - they were coherent and honest.
The christian Inquisition of any non-christians still continues today
against those of us that speak on levels beyond their cage of lies and fear.
the men like who shot Lennon, and whose values still cage this culture
believe 90% what the Vatican Inquisition believed when they killed for 500 years in Europe, any non-Christians they couldn't convince with fear.
73 books of original Catholic bible - 66 maintained in Protestant Reformation.
only a 10% difference in consciousness between the European Inquisitors
and the U.S. Protestants, today. so they continue killing and fearing and hating any who remember Nature, and who have natural power and will to live.
John represents a needed coherency, and his philosophy and thoughts
recorded in his songs will eventually be part with those of us today,
who finally overcome the unsanity and anti-nature of christian fundamentalism, and anti-Earth alienism mindset of those worshipping
an unsensable overlord, while forgetting their oneness with Earth and Sun.

Did Yoko try to hook up with McCartney first prior to getting her teeth into John? Then she denied knowing who The Beatles and John was initially. In pursuing him she even climbed in Johns limousine and sat herself between John and Cynthia according to Cynthia Lennon. She totally manipulated the situation from the off. When Lennon was due to meet with the band to sign contracts to dissolve the band she told him not to do it as the stars were not right and he obeyed her wish. I'm sorry but Lennon was naive. Some of the tricks she got up to in keeping Julian out of John's initial estate point to a very calculated person.

But I have to admit that I watched her performance here twice, and started getting into it. Very progressive in a crazy way.

In this heavily PC society that we find ourselves in today there's no way their song would have gotten air play. Either on tv, or radio. I find it strange how things seemingly were "freer" over the air waves back then, but not now. There's more stations now than then. But they were "freer". I hope things begin to even themselves out in that area. I find this song eye opening for equality, and social justice. Great song, and program. Thanks for this upload!

Just because someone loves John doesn't mean they HAVE to accept Yoko regardless of whether he loved her or not. She was a fucking whack job and filled John's mother complex. I'm so sick and tired of people saying John loved her so accept her. NO have you never had a friend you liked but HATED their partner? What, you HAVE to like their partner because you like them? Hell NO! People put up with her enough because she was John's love but every time John would play live there she was screeching!

If her husband went around murdering people then she became a murderer, she wouldn't be justified by saying, "well he did that." Also, I was referencing Yoko not letting Julian have any of his dad's stuff, as well as separating him from his father forever. I also feel bad for her getting unwarranted hate but, her treatment of Julian for a very long time has been disgusting.

Great artists but they didn't do anything different to others before, just did it their way which is what it is all about. The Beatles actually changed popular music forever and paved the way for all that followed. All pop acts at the time only used 3 chords and classical was the only music that progressed through more chords and sequences that modulated ect . The beatles took this classical approach and used it to write pop/rock. They were the1st, I must add they're not my favourite band .
