Aftersun is such a masterclass in emotive storytelling. I knew a bit of what this movie was about and while I was expecting a tragic story, I didn't expect it to be so well-crafted. I also didn't expect their last dance scene to be the moment the entire movie comes into focus and punches you in the gut.
@@TheLeftistOwl to make you feel worse, I believe this dance is in her mind only. I believe she projected that last dance with her father, she says before the music cue that she doesnt dance.
Her imagination is heartbreaking. He’s never happy in the scenes she’s created of him alone, the ones she could never have seen, to address the gaps in the video footage or in her ‘mind camera.’ EXCEPT when he is doing tai chi alone in their room - he was the same motions he was doing while she was on the phone with her mom. Such a beautiful meditation. Props to Frankie Corio for an amazing child performance. (And Paul Mescal should have won that Oscar instead of Brendan Fraser - the LA Times wrote the most amazing opinion piece that came out the day before the noms were announced, and it basically crowned Paul Mescal as the best film actor working. )
The use of Under Pressure is just devastating. Perfect lyrical alignment: 'Cause love's such an old-fashioned word And love dares you to care for the people on the edge of the night And love dares you to change our way of caring about ourselves This is our last dance This is our last dance This is ourselves
My favorite scene is when they're in the clay bath. The way Calem is super distraught over realizing his selfish action of leaving Sophie at the resort and her forgiving him so tenderly made me bawl. On top of that shortly after that scene was when Sophie got the strangers to sing for Calem's birthday and it immediately cut to him sobbing alone. My interpretation is that he was overwhelmed by the love that was shown to him in those moments and that was the closest he got to changing his mind about ending himself.
The Losing my Religion scene felt like somebody punched me in the chest really hard. Of course it was not just the scene, but every little detail before that made this scene feel like an explosion. I think the last time I felt this sad, was at the ending of Dancer in the Dark.
Great take on this beautiful film. It really is an experience that explaining the plot will do no justice. By the end you'll just feel broken inside, but also strangely moving.

what was it about their last dance scene that punched you in the gut?
@@blaisetelfer8499 that it was their last dance and she was clinging on to him, hoping she could ground him and let him know he is loved

Tender, Losing my Religion, and Under Pressure now hold extra layers of feeling for me :(
