Her imagination is heartbreaking. He’s never happy in the scenes she’s created of him alone, the ones she could never have seen, to address the gaps in the video footage or in her ‘mind camera.’ EXCEPT when he is doing tai chi alone in their room - he was the same motions he was doing while she was on the phone with her mom. Such a beautiful meditation. Props to Frankie Corio for an amazing child performance. (And Paul Mescal should have won that Oscar instead of Brendan Fraser - the LA Times wrote the most amazing opinion piece that came out the day before the noms were announced, and it basically crowned Paul Mescal as the best film actor working. )
really well put. one of my favourite movies, you did a stellar job, creative take, imho spot on
I’m baffled by how the UA-cam reviewing/reaction community hasn’t picked up on this movie yet, I absolutely love it!! 🥰 thanks for this great video
Man, this has been my favorite movie for years now. I really love the details you pointed out, especially the cinematography and facial expressions which spill out the emotional weight in the story. Well done.
I don't think Kit Kat's accident came out of left field -- we are explicitly told multiple times that things aren't working out well for her; we just end up glossing over it because Tim doesn't register it
This is a great video. I'm excited to see your channel grow.
Christopher Nolan is the most overrated director in cinematic history
Great take on this beautiful film. It really is an experience that explaining the plot will do no justice. By the end you'll just feel broken inside, but also strangely moving.
Just saw the movie in cinema and it was amazingly sad. Good thoughts
The use of Under Pressure is just devastating. Perfect lyrical alignment: 'Cause love's such an old-fashioned word And love dares you to care for the people on the edge of the night And love dares you to change our way of caring about ourselves This is our last dance This is our last dance This is ourselves
My favorite scene is when they're in the clay bath. The way Calem is super distraught over realizing his selfish action of leaving Sophie at the resort and her forgiving him so tenderly made me bawl. On top of that shortly after that scene was when Sophie got the strangers to sing for Calem's birthday and it immediately cut to him sobbing alone. My interpretation is that he was overwhelmed by the love that was shown to him in those moments and that was the closest he got to changing his mind about ending himself.
My favorite movie of last year
Aftersun is such a masterclass in emotive storytelling. I knew a bit of what this movie was about and while I was expecting a tragic story, I didn't expect it to be so well-crafted. I also didn't expect their last dance scene to be the moment the entire movie comes into focus and punches you in the gut.
what was it about their last dance scene that punched you in the gut?
@@blaisetelfer8499 that it was their last dance and she was clinging on to him, hoping she could ground him and let him know he is loved
@@TheLeftistOwl to make you feel worse, I believe this dance is in her mind only. I believe she projected that last dance with her father, she says before the music cue that she doesnt dance.
brilliant essay man, keep up the great work
Much appreciated!
i wish that one day somebody will accept the fact that i like tenet too haha. also one of my favorite essays on aftersun! free sub ngl
This movie uses songs and lyrics in an amazing way. Tender, Losing my Religion, and Under Pressure now hold extra layers of feeling for me :(
The Losing my Religion scene felt like somebody punched me in the chest really hard. Of course it was not just the scene, but every little detail before that made this scene feel like an explosion. I think the last time I felt this sad, was at the ending of Dancer in the Dark.
Just got recommended this video and I absolutely loved this video wish it had more views because it’s really well edited! Keep up the great work!
Glad you enjoyed!
Such a well written, well edited video essay. Thank you for encapsulating the movie in a way that resonated with me!
Just discovered channel, quality stuff. Wish u published more frequently.
That’s the plan!
The « I like Tenet » statement, got you a new sub. Thanks for your analysis and this whole essay vibe mate.
Hoho nice vid. Really enjoyed it
A fine interpretation!
Welcome back king!
Laurence how are you so good at everything?
It all started when I was young Cade (I disagree but thank you that’s very kind)
I went into this movie watching it for Margot Robbie and Rachel McAdams but ended up really enjoying the movie. It’s a good movie but it played with my emotions leaving me happy and sad. Appreciate the little things in life.
very insightful analysis Laurence; you made me appreciate this warm and touching movie even more!
Luv dis movie, very good
I love that movie and this video said everything
Oh hell yeah
This, for me, is Curtis' masterpiece, which is sadly underrated as the slightly more high-concept premise (and just the fact that he had done many other iconic Rom-Coms before it) put people off it compared to his simpler outings such as Notting Hill or Four Weddings and a Funeral. Though the glorious, tangled web that is Love Actually will forever be my personal favourite (which also gets better with multiple rewatches as you realise how characters are connected to other characters and even notice the background characters who were cut from the film). I love the way there is a clear arc to learning the time travel powers, and it plays around with audience expectations of "I would do this" only to show why that doesn't work, and eventually delivers the central message of the film, making the time travel medium the perfect way to deliver the story, not just the inciting incident of a story (such as Back to the Future, though I love that film as well)
I like to read your comments about other Curtis' movies, thanks for sharing, I will definitely have a look at the ''glorious tangled web'' of Love Actually =)
wow only 460 views at this time, really underrated, keep making videos like this and you'll do just fine!
The glaring plot hole doesn't have to be a glaring plot hole if you consider that he didn't go back in time there, his dad did. We see earlier that you can take other people back in time with you when he took KitKat to the new year's party so I always thought his dad just took him to his timeline That completely negates the whole child switching problem since it wasn't actually "Tim's line" it was his dad's that he piggybacked onto
Holy shit you’re right. Okay it’s a perfect movie in that case!
I dunno, they show a shot when they go back and both of them are doing the clenched fists and thinking about going back. If he was taken back, he wouldn’t have needed to.
The only movie I cried while watching, I love this movie so much
I agree
You've done it again.
Probably the best Rom-Com film ever made honestly This and Notting Hill
Oh damn, Ben from Canada was right, get ready to blow up
Teach me big bro
This articulates so much of what I love about this movie.
Brilliant video Laurence! I remember watching this film a couple of years ago and absolutely loved it. I might just give it a third rewatch this evening.
Thank you! It’s a great rewatch. Hope you enjoy it tonight 🙌🏻
Now I’ve got to watch this, thanks for the recommendation Laurence!
Laurence back at it again with a banger
