I’ve never owned a dog but recently my neighbor threw his dog out the door (out of anger), and he scratched my door during the rain. My little guy finally has been in my home for a month taking away some of my depression, made me more active and in general so happy. I’m very sad he got kicked out that way but so glad he is in my home as my first best friend ❤️

My jack russell was 16-17 years old when he died. He went deaf at about 14, milky eyes at 15-16 and started barely eating in his last year. He had no health issues prior to that. He was an absolute legend and a lot of fun.

We had a Jack Russell, I’m still grieving to this day and cry whenever I see one. His name was Cosmo, we had him for 18 and a half years. Jacks are a very special dog, I sadly just lost mine. She gave me 11 of the best years of my life. Maggie was her name, she was so smart and jealous. She would pout when she was unable to be between my wife and me. I miss her so much. They definitely make you laugh, Maggie brought so much happiness to us, she was friendly, great with kids, loved to go for a car ride, especially to get ice cream. If you are lucky enough to have a jack, take great care of it, love it, as it will love you back unconditionally. I miss mine very, very much.

@@heatherraworth8549 thank you, you are right, they are very very special. It still baffles me that some people that have dogs are very unaware of how much dogs understand. I know that jacks are smarter than most people but all dogs have a very good sense of what is going on around them. I have heard many so called experts say dogs don't know what you are saying but only pick up the tone of your voice. I talked to Maggie like I would talk to my wife or kid, she always knew what I was saying and exactly what I meant. Almost like she was reading my mind. NEVER had to tell her anything twice, she remembered everything. I miss her so much. I know I will never find another one with a personality like hers, she always knew just what to do to cheer me up. Like I said, smarter than most people. Thanks again Heather, you take care of yourself and your Jack.

@@heatherraworth8549 loved she was, actually she still is. My wife and daughter always told me that I love Maggie more than them, I guess in some ways there is some truth to that. She was very jealous of my wife, I thought it was funny. My wife would argue with the dog and all too often would lose the argument. She was usually a step or two ahead of the wife. Thanks again Heather, it does my heart good to remember how special she truly was. Take care of yourself and your Jack, they continue to get smarter every day. I think that is some of what makes jacks so special. Their little brain is like a sponge absorbing everything they see and hear, and they don't forget, even years later. It's actually pretty amazing.

I researched this breed after I became a single mom many year's ago, and wanted a house dog. A breed that was compact but with strength and a big dog attitude. Also that had a loving and fun disposition. I found it all in the JRT. My first time raising a JRT and after all of these year's I must admit that my experience has made me very partial to the breed. ❤
Sadly, I very recently had to say goodbye to my sweet old shortie Jack Russell Terrier as he crossed the rainbow bridge. 19 year's of our wonderful, happy journey together. He was an absolute delightful bundle of energy as an 8 week old puppy, when I first braught him into my life. He was quite the comic relief and guardian as an adult dog, then a wonderful snuggle bunny, couch potato and confidant as an senior. I do not regret a single moment, day, week, or year with my furry friend. What a gift of unconditional love a dog gives. His name was "Mojo" and chosen because he completely stole my heart the moment I saw him. What a lucky lady I consider myself to be to have had such a great dog. He was highly intelligent and very sweet. He is most certainly missed, but never forgotten. 🐾

Oh the life of a JRT parent. Speaking from experience (mum of 3), these little workhorses never run out of energy even after 2 solid hours of running and constant play. Smart from birth and extremely protective of their human family members. Loud and brash, big brains trapped in tiny bodies and lovers of everything rubber, these darlings are going to make you laugh each day. Fondly sleeping on their backs outside or with their backs pressed against a wall, they never cease to amaze. True athletes and bold little friends all around great and longtime family members.

Don't forget to put sunscreen on your JRT if they spend a regular amount of time in the sun.
Because of their white fur, as with all dogs with white fur, it can make them susceptible to skin cancer, unfortunately.

I take him and the other dogs for three walks a day every day in every kind of weather but he still only sleeps for short periods of the day. This week alone we took them to the beach every day for hours each trip and when we arrived back he jumped out of the car and went looking for his tennis ball. I cannot tire this dog out!

Absolutely - big mistake to underestimate them in any capacity !!
My little bloke had no qualms biting and holding onto a 6' potential ' mugger ' during an attempted robbery. He sunk his teeth right into this idiot's ankle - I could hear the gristle. The bloke screamed like a wee girl Call you dog off or I'll shoot it (with What?) ... it just made Fergus sink his teeth in al the harder.
Even I thought he deserves a VC. !

Hello, Just wanted to comment on your post. I got my Jack Russell terrier when he was 5weeks old and had him the next 17 years. He was our Boomer Baby. Boomer started acting very strange like a drunk person 1 day. The next day I took him to the vet. He had developed a brain tumor, and we had to have him put down just that fast. My heart still hurts for him. It has been 3 yrs. He was my best friend and the best protector. All the drive-in restaurants new him and all of the people wanted to know where he was. Alot of the people cried.Boomer was the best one of my kids,as a matter of fact my human kids referred to him as there little brother. I am just letting everyone know that J.R.T. are wonderful. If I ever get another baby, I would want a Jack Russell. He was not aggressive unless anyone tried to come near us or came next to his babies (my grand children.) I had him cremated and he sits on my dresser. I talk to him every day.I would not have changed a thing!

My jackrussels are 15 and 17. I lost my youngest 3 months ago fro m cancer. There great dogs I recommend getting 2 so they keep each other occupied with doggie door to out door fencing with 7 to 10 year old kids.. kids grow up and move out..doggies don't move mine was momma and daughter, son joined marines when they was 7. They are very hyper dogs keep 2 so they keep each other occupied. Momma and daughter are best for results.. like I said momma 17 ..still strong her and daughter did have tourn ACL surgery, that's normal for long legged Jack's. They used to jump in my truck window 4 ft. Without problem. Now I open door and pick momma up.. that's my baby

My female JR, Dolcie was a beautiful poster child markings. Solid white body with brown mask on her head. Long legs, semi rough coat. Docked tail. She was not spayed. And as a result, she developed many tumors on her belly. Surgery removed the tumors but they were cancerous. She had to be put down at 12.5 years of age. Damn, that was a very hard love to loose. Broke my heart. I cried like a seven year old boy and that was back in Apr 2016. Still have not gotten another pet because I don't want to go through the pain of losing them again...

I adopted a Jack Russell 2 and half years ago. She had her owner died, and she was adopted a couple of times but came back at the pound She is so smart, and does everything I tell her. When I take her out at night and there is a opossum is out in the yard and I tell her to leave it alone and she does. She loves her cats and thinks she is their mom. She never gets up and take food. I walk 4 miles a day on my treadmill and if I don't go back to the room she stands at the door saying you need to walk. I take her to the store and she stands up on the cart and people say she is so cute, and she never barks at anyone in the store. She has given me so much joy. I take her to the Dr with me and she gets up in the chair with me and goes to sleep for 45 minutes, and my Dr says that is the best behaved dog

I have some tips and tricks:
Don’t free feed them and give them meals in a routine (around 2 times a day)
Make sure to give them walks daily or maybe give him a dog walker to get a day for you to relax
If your jack Russell is crazy (like mine) and barks all day long, put one sheet of paper on the window and he will still be able to see outside
Sorry if this doesn’t help, I just tried to tell you what I do with mine

His name is Alex and we all love him very much. He’s mischievous and gets distracted easily. I think he’s adorable, and he always makes us happy. Alex can be funny too, and makes us laugh. We’re currently going through a divorce and we just said goodbye my childhood home today, it was heartbreaking and I cried for a long time beforehand. But now at my dad’s house, Alex is able to be more of an indoor dog and he makes us feel better and forget our troubles. I’m only 12 turning 13 and I just wanted to share. 🙂

When I moved out of the family home, I got another Jack Russell, he was 16 in January. Arthritis has set in (due to an injury) and he doesn't go on walks very much because of this. He had a check up in early February and they said he's absolutely fine. The injury took less time to heal than they thought. He still goes up and down stairs on own. Still gives the 6 year old cat her own back when she tries to bite him (playing). Their bond is beautiful, she even washes him on occasion. X

I’ve been here with 2 JR’s. As long as they still seem interested in life and interact with owner, they will be fine. You should really know your dog by now and if they seem to be ready to go, then it’s probably time to put them down. I can’t explain how you will know if they are ready to go but you will. I had many long moments of welcome attention which is a sign of saying goodbye on their part. Most don’t want to be held long or be bothered. I know it’s hard. I just put my boy down a couple of weeks ago and he was 16.5 yrs and he looked great. He was nearly blind and deaf and I could tell he’d had enough. It tore the heart out of my chest to put him down but the pet can’t suffer due to an owners selfishness. If you have a good vet, they will let you know when it’s time as well. Another note; the quickest way to recover from grieving is to get another one, if circumstances permit it. Once you’ve had a Jack Russell from cradle to grave, no other dog will do. They are a very special breed. Good luck!

Totally agree! When I got my Jack Russell Terrier, Milo, he was 8 weeks old puppy. He's so little cute puppy and very curious one. So I decided to teach him a lot of tricks and even Maths :)

My poor JRT got lime disease from a tick when she was about 12 years old and she lost so much energy but even at 14 with lime disease she's still as energetic as my shar-pai. Her favorite thing is playing with kids and waiting for the mailman so she can bark. I think in her mind she's scaring away the mailman because for the next two hours after she's so proud of herself.

I inherited a 6 year old Jack Russell named Minnie who quickly adopted me. She passed away in November at 15 and a half. I miss her terribly. She was my little doggy angel.

I had a jack named jack. he raised me, from 5 years old to almost 20, he lived for 15 years on our farm. he was a mama’s boy, mom would tell him dig a hole and he’d dig it, helped her gardening. never bit the chickens either. always protective, I could never go for walks without him, mom would let him outside and soon he would find me, even down in a river. he’s stood up to lots of animals from raccoons to treeing a cougar in our backyard. sadly he passed last year from cancer, and my mom passed 5 years before him from cancer as well, he was her dog really. but in the end I knew him for longer than my own mother, and I love and miss that dog so much. I’ll never ever forget him, or have a love quite the same 💔

I currently have a Jack who's six, turning seven in December. She's adopted and was left at home a lot as a puppy by the previous owner due to his job (which is why he found her a new owner in the first place). She was already an adult when we got her, so she does have some anti-social behaviour. She barks at dogs, bikes and anything that runs past us when we're walking, and sometimes she'll stop and growl at anyone walking behind me. She also enjoys barking when people walk past the garden. Other than that, she's a gem and very gentle and loving to those she's gotten to know. Even though she doesn't do well with dogs while on walks, she's gotten to know my sister's dogs very well and loved playing with them before the lockdown. Her favourite toys are the ones she can swing around. I can confirm that Jacks have very strong jaws since it's almost impossible to get a toy out her mouth once she's got it. She sleeps in a bed next to mine and I feel very safe having her next to me. Definitely not going to get burgled unknowingly with her around.
