  • How can communities rethink ownership to remedy poverty? In this powerful talk, Eric Kornacki shares the story of his journey carrying lessons learned from Central American sweatshops to empower the transformation of a now-gentrifying neighborhood gripped in poverty in his hometown of Denver.
    Driven by the belief that building a sustainable world begins by creating viable models that are place-based and empower people to own the solutions within their community, Eric Kornacki co-founded Re:Vision in 2007 and today serves as its executive director. Under his leadership, Re:Vision has grown to a staff of more than 25 people with an annual operating budget of more than $2 million. Re:Vision’s work to build a community-owned food system that increases access and affordability to healthy food while creating economic opportunity in one of Denver’s most vulnerable neighborhoods has created the largest community-led urban agriculture program in the country, with more than 400 families now growing their own food.
    This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

    Excellent presentation
    Growing food first will give you power and confidence not to mention healthy lives and wealth.
    I believe and has been doing organic gardening for a few years now, that food security can create strong local economy and the people. Let's build gardens on empty plots in all cities. There are 4 or 5 areas that we need to work on- food, housing, community(clean, safe, fun), healhcare, and education,
    New co-op can be started in housing, energy, food, safety, education, healhcare, recreation, entertainment, technology, commercial building, construction, etc. where residents own them.

    Thank you!
    What books would you recommend on this concept of 'Place Based Economy'?
    Books that can be used as manuals or guides for this system (please, and thank you).

    I would hope that this is more than a short term solution. Kudos for new energy and fresh minds. But change needs to be made at the top too. I fear this model will be viewed differently in 20 years when goverment, economic and cultural pressures keep Kornacki's vision from flourishing. But as for now great work.

      When people cooperate to become more self sufficient they take power away from the abstract powers of business and state. If the world was composed of in place self sustaining groups cooperating with one another there would be no dependence on powers that would otherwise control and manipulate for their own ends.

      Thanks for watching and for the comments! You are correct in pointing out the challenges to building this model. But in today's economic and political climate, I think place-based economic solutions are needed more than ever. I hope you join the movement!

    Why are you trying to rebrand "co-ops". Just title "Why Co-OP is the solution to poor community" or something. Thanks for the speech though.

    How do you transmute the drug trade that is ever-present in these places?

    • @REVISIONintl
      @REVISIONintl 6 років тому +4

      Hi Jennifer, what drug trade are you referring to? Seems like a pretty broad generalization, not to mention a prejudiced point of view.

    • @markelcreek56
      @markelcreek56 3 роки тому +1

      well since most drug trades are in high expense urban areas, where rich people can go buy drugs I don't really see your point.

    based on a grant from the government. but it is a step up. Rational Exchange does have a more powerful model however.

      Hi Robert - thanks for the comment. Actually, the majority of our work has been funded by local donors. We have received several government grants to help launch what we hope will become a self-sufficient economy. Thanks for watching!

      its not a political system, its an economic system that keeps there wealth inside the community.

    • @TheJayman213
      @TheJayman213 3 роки тому +4

      @@markelcreek56 It's an economic system that keeps wealth with the workers, instead of it going to a minority of owners of the means of production. That's socialism. What makes you think socialism isn't an economic system?

    • @davidwetterer9776
      @davidwetterer9776 2 роки тому

      @@TheJayman213 It's still capitalism. The workers/owners still had to exploit labor &/or have theirs exploited at one time in order to buy/rent property in Westwood to begin with. They are free to sell their homes/stakes in the co-op as they see fit or are still at the mercy of a landlord if the rent goes unpaid. They're just making the best of what they have essentially. It's not a political system either, as no one in the neighborhood is forced to participate just by nature of living there. Just because you see poor people happy or anything else you don't like or understand doesn't automatically make something socialism, despite what you may have been indoctrinated to believe. Please believe also that capitalist governments would not be making donations in the form of grants towards anything they deem threatening to their precious capitalism/very own existence. Stop watching all western main stream political TV. If you love capitalism, then you should be DEMANDING much better social benefits from the current American system, lest the electorate come to the realization that capitalism is too exploitative and unlivable, and actually starts to demand true legitimate socialism.

    No one told him the better solution is deportation and stronger border security. Growing food doesn’t fix a bad culture that produces these communities
