You don't need a kindle, a kindle app is fine as I have tested it out before. thought I did use different programs but they were basically convert the book to epub.
One clarification, and a tip. Firstly, some books can come from Amazon without DRM. TOR, for example, doesn’t put DRM on their books. As for making quicker/simpler, Calibre has some automation features. Somewhere in the setting you can specify a folder that it will auto import books from. Set that up and then if calibre is running and you put books files into that folder they will automatically be imported. There is also a setting in preferences to automatically convert books when importing With that automation in place the process of importing and converting becomes pretty painless, but you’ll still have to download the books individually
Thanks for the very useful video. A hint from my side: As long as you connect your Kobo to your computer, a button "Send to device" appears on calibre. After importing the Kindle ebook into calibre and converting it to a drm-free version, you can just click on the "Send to device" button and the ebook will be automatically uploaded to your Kobo. No need to drag-n-drop it.
Thank you so much.. That's something I wanted to know. I prefer to use the option Calibre gives me instead of copy and paste or drag the file to Kobo's folder. Thanks!
I've been trying to do this very thing for maybe 10 years. I'd give it a try about once a year, and it never worked. Your bit with a couple of steps around uploading the serial number was the secret sauce that made it work for the first time. Thank you.
Thanks for making this easy! I don't have a kobo yet but the sheer thought of having to do this for 400+ books kept me from really looking into them despite wanting to make the switch. I think I'll start converting some of my library a little at a time so that when I do switch I won't have as much work to do
That's what I'm doing...a little at a time. I have way too many ebooks and not enough time or patience to convert and send them all to my kobo one by one!
YEEES OMG really thank you for this video! From Spain i've been 2h trying to understand how to pass the books from my mom's kindle to her new kobo's ebook I gifted her and thanks to you I could My mom said that she loves you for this🤣🤣 Xxx!
Dylan, THANK YOU. After a couple of hours of Reddit research and trial and error, I tried UA-cam. This video got me set up perfectly with my new Kobo. I also spied your Scripture widget on your computer and the 'The Name of the Wind' file on your Kobo. Very nice, brother.
Very helpful! I don’t know how I missed this when it posted. I see a lot of folks are ditching Kindle and moving to Kobo to retain ownership if Amazon gets squirrelly with removing books we’ve paid for. I’m about to jump on that bandwagon.
Thank you Dylan for such an easy step-by-step video on how to do this! I just bought a brand new 11th gen Paperwhite back in February. Just recently had the "tree screen of death" happen on mine and have had ZERO luck from Amazon to get this resolved. Buying my wife and I our own Kobo Libra Colors and moving all of our books over to that. Cheers!
If you're having issues with Calibre crashing, it's likely you need a newer version of the deDRM plug it. The current version may be found here: github.com/noDRM/DeDRM_tools/releases/tag/v10.0.3 (you can also find this new link in the description)
Dylan, genius. Since yesterday I've watched more tutorials than I can remember, from 2024, and yours was the one who solved my problem. It works. Thank you from Argentina.
Thank you so much for this video! I've been thinking of getting a color Kobo, but I was hesitant to take the plunge since all of my ebooks are from Amazon.
Amazing video! Very easy to follow and worked perfectly! I do have to say you can bulk upload to your kobo, at least on Windows. I just selected all of my books and clicked "Send To Device" up the top. Everything worked perfectly, thank you very much for making this vid! I picked up my Kobo Libra Color today and was a bit sad to not have all my books on one device, problem solved 🤩
You saved my day! 🎉🎉🎉 I've just received the Kobo Libra Colour and I have so many kindle books .. to have all my books on one EReader. Perfect! Thank you sooo much!! 😊
This is perfect and a very timely video tutorial cause I just finished preordering the Kobo color Libra and was wondering how was I going to read my Kindle books in the Kobo. You’ve just solved my problem. I have the items and software already so I’ll be ready to follow your instructions once I receive my Kobo. Many thanks!
Thank you for showing how to get the DeDRM plugin to work. Everywhere I have looked on how to install it, never mentioned entering the serial number of the Kindle. Now that I have that missing piece, it works.
Thank you so much!!! This was so helpful and honestly took the headache out of moving from kindle to kobo. I was so worried about losing hundreds of books but so far everything has worked great 😁
Yes - me too. I was instantly regretting buying Kobo - there seemed to be fewer books, and generally more expensive, and that really nasty trick of forcing you to preauthorise payment methods for future purchases. But now I can see that I can still buy books on Amazon and just transfer them. It's a shame that Kobo does that preauthorisation forcing move as I shan't be buying many books from them. Thanks for these tips. My 4 Kindles are long since in the graveyard, but my Amazon account still recognises them.
Finally got this set up and holy cow it works! Previously, I couldn't remove DRM from newer books, but I just did it your way and it actually worked on the newer books!
oh-oh. I just tried loading a third book and it says I don't have a compatible device registered for this content. My Kindle is an old one with the keyboard so I'll probably need a newer Kindle. Strange though. It didn't have any trouble with 2 books published in March but did with a book from February.
This was so helpful, Dylan! Thank you. I pre-ordered the Kobo Libra Colour and was sad I would have to start all over regarding buying books I wanted to annotate with the stylus. Reddit always talks about Calibre and it just didnt compute with me. This helped me so much.
Thank you very much for this video! I just got my Kobo and there is absolutely no way I would have figured this out. Day one, and my Kindle library is on my Kobo! Thank you, Thank you!
This is excellent. I’ve used calibre and Apprentice Alf’s plugin since 2018 but I didn’t know about linking to a kindle device. I’ve just downloaded a kindle book on computer (using an old version of the kindle app because my plugin can’t remove drm from newer books or books downloaded on new app), then dragged and dropped those books into calibre. I’ll get things set up the way you’ve done it to see if it’ll remove the drm on the new books. I’ll be sure to get the same drm plugin you used. That’s a nice recliner, btwv
Thank you so much! Unfortunately it is a headache to get started, but once you have everything up and running the process is pretty easy. I wish there was an easier way!
OMG THank you sooo much. If only I'd found your video 12 hours ago! Thank you for mking the process so simple and easy to understand. You sir, are a legend.

Ive had a heck of a time finding the right Calibre version and the right DRM tools version the last few years. I’m going to download your video and go thru it step by step and try again with your links. Wish me luck and thank you!!
Great presentation of this, followed along and got my first book transferred over with no issues. Mind, I am already a Calibre user, and am computer savvy.
Thank you for this! I've really been wanting to switch from kindle to kobo and this made it easier--I was already dreading this part but its not hard at all!

Thanks for the video! In this video you download Dedrm v7.2.1, but when you go to install it, you install v.10. Where do we get version 10? After i installed v.7.2.1, Calibre kept quitting when I went to update the DeDRM preferences
Hi. Thanks for the video!. Did you tried to remove the DRM from kobo books too? so you can read your books bought on kobo store on your kindles? My sole objective is to have all my legally purchased e-books free to read them on any device.. thanks again!
When you "transfer" your Kindle ebooks over to the Kobo library using this method, are the ebooks automatically removed from the Kindle library? Or does this essentially just "copy" the DRM-free version to the Kobo?

This was a really useful video! Thank you very much. You pushed me over the edge from my Kindle (I've been reading on a Kindle for 15 years or more) and into a new color Kobo reader. I'm assuming that with the DRM removed that you can highlight and take notes on books? I'm also assuming the Kobo has a dictionary function similar to my Kindle?? Again, thank you for the great video.
Thank you so much, you just plugged a very stupid hole in what was going wrong with mine. I was downloading books "to" an older Kindle to try and avoid downloading with the newer KFX file type, but I used a different Kindle serial number in my KFX plugin so I kept getting errors. Is there any way to do this without having a kindle? I have a kobo (that I love) but some books aren't available on the kobo store unfortunately that I'd like to read. I've never had a kindle though

You don't need a kindle for this. You just need an older kindle version for your pc (version 1.17). You can find your downloaded books in documents -> my kindle content -> then take the book. You only need the big file and calibre will know what book it is.
Thank you so much for this video. I was kind of stressing about getting my purchases on my Kobo Libra Colour from Amazon. My other question was with you converting the book to epub then are you able to use all the features on the kobo like increase/decrease font, change font, annotating etc??
Great tutorial, thanks! Even if you bought the ebook, unfortunately the United States' DMCA makes it illegal to circumvent ANY form of copy protection (DRM) even for personal use. You can buy 100 copies of an eBook, but if you circumvent DRM on books you bought, it is illegal in the United States according to the DMCA. Even for only your own personal use.
what should i do if it wont let me download the plug in? my computer says it's invalid because it does not contain top level "init" file are there other alternatives?
Great video! Just FYI- I tried to copy and paste my serial number from the Amazon website, but it didn’t work. When I typed it in, though, it worked great!
Hi Dylan, Thanks for the videos, I'm a fan. I purchased a Kindle reader, when they first came out. I also still have my Kindle DX. I wonder if you have any area where someone can ask an in-depth question, or two. Thanks again! (That chair looks so comfy!)
This definitely works for getting them on my Kobo Libra, but I do have an issue I'm running into. To start, I don't actually have a kindle so I can't add a serial number to the plug in, yet seemingly it still gets transferred. The issue I have is when actually trying to read the files on my Kobo. Aside from the cover/first page, everything is zoomed in to only show the top left each page, with no option to zoom out, which makes reading manga, or pretty much anything impossible. Would having a kindle serial number fix that, or am I doing something else wrong?
Hi, so i also just use the kindle app and i want to convert my books to my kobo. You say it worked for you but i can't seem to make it work. How did you do it?
Hmmm - Do you think I could tweak this for a similar process of reading a kobo book on a kindle? My local independent bookstore sells ebooks but they say (Kobo ebook) next to the title so I have always been worried that I wouldn't be able to read them on my kindle. Would love to support my local bookshop with ebook purchases!

You can buy 100 copies of an eBook, but if you circumvent DRM on books you bought, it is illegal in the United States according to the DMCA. Even for only your own personal use.
That's what I thought! I am afraid of trying, even not being in the USA but close enough to be in trouble
what should i do if it wont let me download the plug in? my computer says it's invalid because it does not contain top level "init" file are there other alternatives?
I've noticed everyone who's asked this on this video isn't getting a response. The same thing is happening to me and I have yet to find a solution.
Great video! Just FYI- I tried to copy and paste my serial number from the Amazon website, but it didn’t work. When I typed it in, though, it worked great!
Awesome video. Super clear. Thanks!!
What if you dont have a kindle but use the kindle app?
It won't work because you need the Kindle serial number to complete the process.
@@keljo60 There is a button in configuration for kindle on Android and Mac/PC.
I honestly think this is why I'd opt for a eink tablet
Absolutely masterful, Thank you very much Dylan.
