A friend of mine a while back put me in charge of selling his Joe collection. It's almost all gone. The Phantom is one of the things but he mentioned he'd like to collect the jets again so I kept it to fully restore anything that needed to be replaced. Those cockpit rails are a huge problem. I was able to fully restore the jet using any original parts that didn't need to be replaced and got the repro stickers to get new stickers and put them in the correct spots ha ha. It looks amazing.
I was just going into 8th grade when I bought mine at Hill’s Department Stores. I paid $12 on sale. That was the last GI Joe vehicle I bought. Sadly, I threw away the pristine box when I moved my parents out of their house about six years ago, but the X-19 is in near perfect shape with all the parts!
I remember those concept images of the stealth fighters that came out in the late 80s, figured it wouldn't take long for GI Joe to hop on it and come up with something similar.
The Phantom is one of my favorite Joe jets. I initially thought I couldn't get one for Christmas in '88. I'd shown my dad the Joe catalogue and asked if I could have the jet. He said no, it was too big. I was confused and disappointed because my brother had a Conquest and had gotten the Mamba in '87. I had a TTBP. There's no way the X-19 was too big. Turns out, my dad thought I wanted the MCC (which, of course, I did but wasn't about to ask for something that big), but I clarified that I was asking for the stealth. I ended up with getting it as my first Joe jet and my brother got the Skystorm. A few years later, a family friend gave us a Christmas present to share, which turned out the be a 2nd X-19. Since I still had mine (w/ the original pull back landing gear mechanism) the 2nd one (w/ the updated pull down gear switch) went to my brother. Good times.
Great review of a plane I have long dreamed of and hope to find one day. I am guessing the Ghostrider name may have also been borrowed from Top Gun which was still very popular at the time this came out.
My thoughts exactly. Both Maverick and Cougar used Ghost Rider as designation for their aircraft (Cougar specified he was Ghost Rider 117) suggesting they should have been members of VF-142 Ghost Riders. 1988 was just two years after the movie, and F-14 models based on the movie were still hot commodities then.
I still have *most* of mine from when I was a kid. Three guesses as to which parts are missing. As for Ghostrider *wanting* to not be noticed... well, I can relate. It’s continued to this day, unintentionally. I’m 6’5”, 250lbs, and I somehow can sneak up on people, even in full view of them.
I always liked this jet. Underrated toy. Still has the retractable landing gear system, the rubber tires, the dual seat cockpit, and the huge scale and presence. Great piece. The next jet that was released in the GI Joe line was the Cobra Hurricane, and it is a massive, massive step backwards from this, the last great jet in the line. I'd go so far as to say the only better jets in the line were the Skystriker and the Night Raven. I love the Rattler dearly but it's not got the sheer size and wow factor of the 'big 3.'
Man I used to always look at this thing in the pamphlet that the time it came out. I never knew exactly how the pilot sat inside it, but there is SO much wasted space on jets, especially this one. It's still an awesome flying vehicle and that landing gear mechanism is crazy.
Great reviews! A small suggestion: it would be very interesting to know/remember what these figures, vehicles, playsets, etc. cost at the time of their release. It would give your content even more context.
I agree. I remember what lots of things cost back inearly 90s near the end of line. I remember that the cheapest joe I bought was $2.97. I still have the price tags on some of the od boxes and figure cards.
i got this for christmas in, i think 88, and it seemed very extravagant, and was fun to play with... for a little while. my other flying gi joe vehicles were the skyhawk, the fang, the trouble bubble, the claw, amd a couple of other 3 3/4 jets, like captain power. all of those could be flown around mostly one-handed. i had many skyhawk/fang battles by myself. but the phantom was so big, and felt so delicate, that it took two hands to really handle it. to me, that limited its play value, and it didn't take long before it mostly became a grounded mission objective, while later additions to my hodge-podge air force like the toger rat, mudfighter and batwing were much favored...
I had never seen this landing gear lever in action before! How have the rubber bands on the landing gear doors held up over the years for everyone out there? It would have been great to be able to have paid $250 for this package almost just like it was but....
I hope the retro line eventually sees a x-19 release. I had a thrift store special of this jet. No weapons, no landing gear, no canopy, but it did have the price applied with permanent marker.
I remember the US DoD saying that the supposed F-19 wouldn't be able to fly, most likely because of its lack of wings. Regarding the toy, if it were real it too wouldn't be able to fly. Nor would it be any good as a stealth plane due to all of the angles and outboard weapons. Even planes like the F-22 and F-35 carry their missiles in weapons bays in order to avoid detection by radar. I don't think the name "Ghostrider" (singular word) is able to be copyrighted due to a USN squadron existing at the time with the name. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VF-142 Tom Cruise's character in the movie Top Gun also used the callsign "Ghostrider".
I will be honest, I've never had an issue with the canopy falling off my X-19. I took the seatbelts out of mine and managed to fit the modern Ace figure that came with the 30th Anniversary Sky striker in the back seat. Mine is pretty durable, which is mildly surprising considering how dirty it was when I got it. Your example might have been stored improperly before you got it.
I had this toy, during all the stealth plane hype! It did have easy to detach parts, but wasn't too heavy. Mine had the backwards sliding retractable lever for the glanding gear. The red scarf was a nice feature for the pilot as well : )
It is probably most based on the Northrop Stealth Fighter proposal, which is known to have been nicknamed the Phantom. Preliminary designs for that are where most of the speculative stuff comes from. That was the one with the smooth curves. You can see some of its design lineage in the YF-23. I don’t think it ever made it as far as actual prototype, but some various mock ups were made. The noteworthy elements of the Northrop proposal/bid, that seem consistent with most of the various “F-19” speculation is the inward tilted twin tails, the top mounted engine intakes and the smooth curved fuselage with small topside canards.
When he appeared in comics, I thought that Zandar changed his allegiance to G.I.Joe. The whole thing with notbody remembering his name was strange and the only similar person described in comics was Zandar.
For anyone who is thinking about restoring your X-19 there two parts that are kinda hard to come by, first is the original rubber nose cone for the front of the X-19 there are sellers on eBay who make 3D print cones but if you want to an original be prepared to spend about $20 or more, the second part is the pilots red scarf by itself
I got this for my birthday when I was little in the UK, I absolutely loved it and the ghost rider guy inside, he always reminded me of that German guy in the Three Amigos 🙂
i remember getting this as a kid at xmas. my brother and i had to share it. such a fun toy to play with. now as an adult, ill probably pass on the jet and just get the pilot, ummmm, yea the pilot and make him co-pilot in the tomahawk. another great video, thank you hoody. see ya in the next one, cobra!
I remember this vehicle but with a different pilot.I believe his name was Ace and he was also featured at the Sunbow cartoon series.I remember it as the largest vehicle in my collection and i got it from my brother by giving him the space themed Crusader.
I have Gi Joe comic books from the 80s. I bought the stealth fighter from Roses for 29.99. Still have it today and other Gi Joe planes. When toys were made to last. Nuff said
Sometimes you guys, you and your buddy Formbx257 are too harsh of a reviewers. This is an excellent looking toy. Sure, the hidden machine gun wing thing fals off, if you pull it too much, but it's not like we're playing with it at our age. I've personally never had any problems with opening and closing the canopy. The pull mechanism for the landing gear is awesome. You're right. Ghostrider himself is a great looking figure. The Phantom logo is awesome like you said. The one problem I have with this vehicle that you declined to mention was the winged missiles slide off easily. But, it's totally worth having in your collection. The colors are cool. It's a beautiful toy.
Thanks for sharing your inspirational to the toilet collectors you are the man GI Joe and stuff Kevin I need to watch more of your videos thank you again
That $12.97 price was strange. I bought it for $20-25 at Zayre in 1989. Looking back, I think I was only drawn to the size and sleek design. I didn't have a G.I.Joe fighter, so I especially wanted this to go against the Cobra Night Raven.
I'm sure people can correct me here but I had read somewhere that the reason why they called the pilot Ghost Rider it was a nod to the squadron name in the movie Top Gun...
I happened to get a Ghostrider figure with a Mudfighter. It also came with Windchill in the window and a note stating that Dogfight was on reassignment.
The F-19 design still gets used a lot by people who want to argue that the "Aurora" super secret SCRAM Jet exists and it was just a psyop to keep it secret. It is the reason that the word "Aurora" and phrase "Model Kit 19" were outright banned discussion topics on a lot of early aviation forums
I owned one of these. It was soo awesome :-) Also, it's really cool because it was Hasbro's design right before the real stealth aircraft were released like you said.
Hmmmmmm... just based off of that thumbnail, this ship looks suspiciously similar to the big chrome "Naboo Royal Starship" from Star Wars episode I. the prop/ship designers for Star Wars were known to take parts of plastic models and toys, and repurpose them into new ships. i wonder....
I'm curious if the design team of this GI Joe craft were inspired by the fictional X-19 Ghost Rider stealth planes mentioned in Tom Clancy's 1986 war novel, "Red Storm Rising" which both seem to be similar in description but different name (except having the same military designation of X-19). I listened to the audio book version of that novel and almost forgot about the similarities between this 1988 vehicle and the 1986 novel.
I had that awesome plane! I wish it had been re-released during the 25th anniversary run. Cool thing about the design, that movie Stealth featured a similar plane.
This was the time Walmarts was coming into different areas, and what they would do is take this toy and under price it to the point Walmart took a loss, and made it impossible for the competitors to compete. Hills and othere department stores took a beating at times trying to compete, to the point they lost money, but could not absorb the lost like Walmart could.
I didn't hit target marketing age for GI Joe until about 1986 - mixed in with everything else awesome from 1986. I had this toy - but, it just doesn't hit my nostalgia vibes for some reason. I guess I was into the Shark Tank thing (there's some generational marketing weird for everybody) - and I really wasn't into vehicles. It was the characters driving my imagination... Snake and Storm, and here we are today, I guess... We created this.
It looks kind of like an aethersprite fighter from the Star Wars prequels and Clone Wars series. Only the cockpit forward instead of towards the back and no place for an astromech droid. 😜 16:44 "You can always tell a Milford man." Best Regards and Happy New Year!!!
I do wonder if that torso for ghost rider had been intended for a updated Mainframe figure. for some reason it just has that vibe to it . over all its a cool jet , mines missing a few parts but mostly complete. plus I never knew about the different lever for the landing gear mine is the one that slides straight out and back in again
Its amazing how the Hasbro designers gave some thought about heat signature with the engines by having then retracted and I am sure there are materials surrounding them to help also.
@@maxbrandt6 True but the weapons are retractable so I would assume by the time the pilot would be within range of the mission target the stealthy properties would have done the job of getting the plane in and many out.
I had the other variant of the X 19 with the pull back lever to activate the landing gear. My only real issue was I could never get the lazers to stand up when deployed. I as a kid was a Gi Joe Dr. Frankenstein I mixed and matched parts of "lackluster figures or found better combinations , in this case I found Ghost Rider's head to be a better match to Air Patrol Commander Skydive's body and vice versa. Sadly my X 19 was lost in a storage unit debacle, but I still have Ghost rider/Skydive and Skydive/Ghost Rider in my figure collection
Isn't it possible Ghost Rider was meant to be a refernce both to the movie "Top Gun" and the real life Navy squadron VF-142? VF-142 was the Ghost Riders and both Maverick and Cougar's F-14s are refered to as Ghost Rider in the movie (Cougar states he's Ghost Rider 117 and twice when Maverick requests a flyby the air traffic controller responds "Negative, Ghost Rider, the pattern is full", both times leading to Maverick buzzing the tower). More young boys were more likely to be familar with the the movie than with the Tom Clancy book.
@hcc788 love your review. Don’t know if you are aware there is a European / UK version ware you don’t get ghost rider instead you get Ace from the sky striker
I was enjoying this video until I saw the goddamn Hills sticker showing it at $12.95.... oh my GOD! I found one MISB for about $75 some years back. I have seen some recent prices that have really gone up.
A friend of mine a while back put me in charge of selling his Joe collection. It's almost all gone. The Phantom is one of the things but he mentioned he'd like to collect the jets again so I kept it to fully restore anything that needed to be replaced. Those cockpit rails are a huge problem. WOW, I think my last GIJoe vehicle was the Night Raven purchased at Hills.
$12.97 oh man those were the days (granted time period and all). Hills used to have an amazing toy department "Hills is where the toys are"
Great choice! One of the best Joe aircrafts ever produced.
I remember those concept images of the stealth fighters that came out in the late 80s, figured it wouldn't take long for GI Joe to hop on it and come up with something similar.
It looks great. I could see this working as a spaceship as well .
I remember having this when I was kid; probably 1989. So many good memories.
The Phantom is one of my favorite Joe jets. I initially thought I couldn't get one for Christmas in '88. I'd shown my dad the Joe catalogue and asked if I could have the jet. Very nice piece, now I see what I missed out on back in the early to mid-90s when I was collecting the toy line.
For my money, the Night Raven is the best looking Joe/Cobra jet, but the x19 is a close second.
i got this for christmas in, i think 88, and it seemed very extravagant, and was fun to play with... for a little while. my other flying gi joe vehicles were the skyhawk, the fang, the trouble bubble, the claw, amd a couple of other 3 3/4 jets, like captain power. all of those could be flown around mostly one-handed. i had many skyhawk/fang battles by myself. but the phantom was so big, and felt so delicate, that it took two hands to really handle it. to me, that limited its play value, and it didn't take long before it mostly became a grounded mission objective, while later additions to my hodge-podge air force like the toger rat, mudfighter and batwing were much favored...

Like you, I never had the canopy come off, but that rubber tip was lost within the first month.

Love having you back at the classic Joe reviews HCC!
I had this vehicle! I was 11 or 12, at the time. I loved it! I always pretended it was a space plane.
Brings me back, I use to have this as a kid

2022 is gonna be, like, the coolest year ever.
I remember getting that on Christmas in '88 had a lot of fun with that one
That invisible tech would make the Predator jealous.
I remember this vehicle but with a different pilot.I believe his name was Ace and he was also featured at the Sunbow cartoon series.I remember it as the largest vehicle in my collection and i got it from my brother by giving him the space themed Crusader.
The wing tips were the real pain of the jet but I loved my Phantom. I had the one that pulled straight back which would jam
I have Gi Joe comic books from the 80s. I bought the stealth fighter from Roses for 29.99. Still have it today and other Gi Joe planes. When toys were made to last. Nuff said

Simply an incredible plane along with a great figure. Definitely top tier.

That $12.97 price was strange. I bought it for $20-25 at Zayre in 1989.
Looking back, I think I was only drawn to the size and sleek design. I didn't have a G.I.Joe fighter, so I especially wanted this to go against the Cobra Night Raven.
Some people still think Aurora is/was a real Lockheed stealth plane, and that it pretty much looked liked this.
Excellently done, bravo!
I would have been tempted to keep saying "Goat Rider" 🐐and "Bantam X-19" 🐓 all throughout....
🚜🚜🚜
😆 🚜🚜🚜
i had this as kid i remember getting it for my bday in 1990. i never had any problems he just mention tho.
I got this still! I just watched the 87 movie and decided I'm pulling out everything tomorrow from mom's basement
Had this. My grandmother got it for me. Christmas 1988!
Hoodie, thanks for a great start to another year of your reviews. Welcome back.
i like this and had just the bare bones of this jet. it was hard to find a place to go with it and take care of. much like my poor raven.
I have this figure minus the scarf, minus the plane I think he is complete. 🙂 cool figure!
$12 dollars!!! Dam I missed thatZ. Even in the 80s that’s an awesome deal
I never knew this one existed. Thanks for posting.
Ahh...a vehicle that I didn't know about because I was out of GIJoe by then. I want this beautiful toy..
This was my first ever large gi joe toy as a kid I worked all summer long to afford that thing good times
I owned one of these. It was soo awesome :-) Also, it's really cool because it was Hasbro's design right before the real stealth aircraft were released like you said.
I love this jet. My only gripe is that the plastic is a bit brittle.
great vid and i have not seen a hill sticker in so long . i got so many of my old toys from them .
So cool! You're a lucky man. I would love to have your collection
I never knew there were different controls for the landing gear. I have the sliding one.
So glad you're back!!!! I picked this up last year and it looks great 👍. Thank you for the review
Hmmmmmm... just based off of that thumbnail, this ship looks suspiciously similar to the big chrome "Naboo Royal Starship" from Star Wars episode I. the prop/ship designers for Star Wars were known to take parts of plastic models and toys, and repurpose them into new ships. i wonder....
I got this and the rolling thunder one Christmas, I had a hell of a time finding room for the things!
What an awesome design
Just got my first one oh darn only missing the vertical trail fins
I'm curious if the design team of this GI Joe craft were inspired by the fictional X-19 Ghost Rider stealth planes mentioned in Tom Clancy's 1986 war novel, "Red Storm Rising" which both seem to be similar in description but different name (except having the same military designation of X-19). Good to see you still have the scarf. Great video.
I had the version with the slide back landing gear tab.
My bother and I had this. It was great. Fit right in with the other planes.
I had that awesome plane! I wish it had been re-released during the 25th anniversary run. Cool thing about the design, that movie Stealth featured a similar plane.
I used to have the X-19 as well as the Tomahawk
“Targeting rival toy company, Kenner.” LOL…stay classy Hasbro

Thank you so much
I do wonder if that torso for ghost rider had been intended for a updated Mainframe figure. for some reason it just has that vibe to it . over all its a cool jet , mines missing a few parts but mostly complete. plus I never knew about the different lever for the landing gear mine is the one that slides straight out and back in again
I received this for Christmas. 88 ? Never played with really. If I remember correctly the landings gear broke early on
This beauty is still on my wishlist.
I'm not into G.I. Joe, but that thing is effing cool!
Great review! I need that dang nosecone.
Its amazing how the Hasbro designers gave some thought about heat signature with the engines by having then retracted and I am sure there are materials surrounding them to help also.
But because it's weapons are external it's radar cross section would be very noticeable!
@@maxbrandt6 True but the weapons are retractable so I would assume by the time the pilot would be within range of the mission target the stealthy properties would have done the job of getting the plane in and many out.
12:06 It also helps make him look like a Kamen Rider. Seriously if you pulled those big green bug eye googles down, he'd totally pass as one.
Thank you for another great video!
Inflation. Holy crap you’re not kidding. I still have this in my parent’s basement completely in tact but I lost the pilot at some point as a kid.
I agree!!!
The map on Ghostrider is certainly Ohio, but Cincinnati is more towards the lower left portion of the state than what his target sight is marking.
Works very hard at not being noticed. Wears a bright red, highly visible scarf.
The code name issue probably wouldn't be an issue these days. Marvel likes having lots of people with the same name.
More young boys were more likely to be familar with the the movie than with the Tom Clancy book.
honestly this feels more like a cobra vehicle than a joe vehicle
The vehicle may not be very practical in play or reality but damn it looks good
@hcc788 love your review.
I remember seeing this vehicle at Costco or sams club all the time as a kid but I never had it. It didn’t appeal to me for some reason.
i already forgot the other considerations, you mentioned for....whats his name
