Easy how-to guide for overclocking an AMD A8-3500M /3850MX cpu to 2.84GHz using k10stat. Very stable on A8. This config also works with A6-3400M.
This was done on an HP Pavilion dv6-6135dx. Sweet sweet laptop!
Configuration:
STATE, FID, DID, Voltage
B0, 26, 1, 1.35
P0, 30, 2, 1.087
P1, 24, 2, 1.05
P2, 18, 2, 1.025
P3, 16, 2, 0.987
P4, 14, 2, 0.975
P5, 12, 2, 0.962
P6, 10, 2, 0.93
Thanks for the video.
I was impressed that this laptop ran newer games to begin with, but the difference after overclocking like this was instantly noticeable. Awesome.
Update of 2022: It can run so newer games like Workers and Resources: Soviet Republic... But only in low resolution!
The wonderful thing about overclocking is that every single chip is completely unique, and no two chips will achieve the same clockspeeds on the same voltages. So, listing clockspeed/voltage settings for someone to use is essentially the same as telling someone to put random numbers that may or may not blow something up into their computer for no reason.
Thanks for the video on this utility. There's no official manual or guide that I'm aware of for it (and the readme file seems to be written more in japanese than english); so, this provides a helpful start for someone wanting to play around with it.
Unfortunately, I got distracted as I was watching the video when I felt compelled to try and figure out which of my smoke detectors had a dying battery that needed to be replaced. Later, I realized the chirping was on the video. ;-)
People complaining that they can't get it to work. U have to right click it in the icon tray in the bottom right and check "enable clock" for it to work. it won't actually change on cpu-z unless u hae something running or click the "lock" feature and click on P0. this program does work. quite well infact. i use it to run many games i cudnt before
1) right click on the battery icon in your taskbar-->power options
2) select "high performance" and then "change plan settings"
3) "change advanced power settings" -->processor power management-->Max Processor state
4) make sure both "plugged in" and "on battery" are at 100%, apply everything--> OK
wow this worked great did ur exact settings on my HP-DV6-6144CA and increased my processor power from 1.5GHz to 2.3 GHz.
My biggest thanks. My laptop is actually able to play games on high now. You made my week, sir.
my pavilion dv6 (A8-3500m) max voltage is 1.2750v. at that voltage, I start overheating at about 2.8-2.9Ghz, but i dont BSOD until 3.2Ghz! My current setup is this:
B0: 30-1-1.2750
P0: 12-0-1.2125
P1: 9-0-1.1875
P2: 6-0-1.1500
P3 16-2-1.050
P4 20-3-1.0250
P5 11-3-0.9500
P6 Default
Keep in mind the default max speed for this laptop was 1.5Ghz!
You can set P0 to 2700 with the ~max voltage
That was great man ! Very well explained cheers on the video ! Ihave applied this now on my amd 6400. And i hope it will help me with Planetside 2
Amigo The Mack Sparrow, eres fantastico, mi laptop nunca habia tenido una evaluacion tan buena. El rendimiento es buenisimo y ademas estable.
Gracias.
i've been messing around with various clock frequency and voltage settings all day and this one TheMackSparrow has put together seems extremely stable. was able to play SC2 for a few hours on high/ultra with no issues and fraps was showing higher framerates from stock settings, 30-40fps average. was expected since SC2 is cpu intensive. also ran prime95 benchmark and this OC is significantly better than stock. this is on a dv6-6135dx
In regards to the settings that Richard provided: Remember that no two CPUs are exactly the same, even if they are of the same model. Therefore, it's usually not a good idea to take someone else's settings and use them off the bad, especially if they're more on the extreme side. If you decide to use these settings, bring down the clock speed by 200mhz~ or so and play it safe.
Thanks, Sub and Like. This really works!!! Now I run Arma 3 twice as well. My computer is a
HP Pavilion dv6-6135dx
@TehkProductionZ the cpu has a boost to go to 2.4 ghz as it's highest setting, and this tut makes it so the cpu can boost to 2.84 ghz when running some apps (like games.
My laptop is also a 14", a Samsung one. I solved the overheating problem by simply opening a hole (sound's crazy, I know) beneath the fan, so that the air can flow freely and be casted out really quickly. Of course, I polished the hole and used a metal grid on it, so it still offer protection for the fan, but the air is sucked easily. I overclocked my A8 3500m to 2,3 GHz with overdrive and my max temps (playing heavy games) is about 77-80° C. 55°C under normal use, like Internet or Office tasks.
Appreciate this video man, subbing
I got a HP DV6-6135dx
thanks a lot to u and the uploader. but can i ask how u came up with settings? they work but i just want to know is it just random settings u were trying or do u have indepth knowledge about this? thanks either way :)
I have a hp dv7-6165us and these settings working great along with an Overclocked 6750m
@TwilitAssassin121 Hi Twilit: Yes, I keep this overclock setting on constantly and have had no problems. You would think that such a high setting would fry your chip but it does not stay @ 2.3GHz constantly. The chip will alternate b/w the various lower power states based on usage. For example, if your laptop is idle, it will stay in the 1.3-1.8GHz range.
P.S.My overclock is actually at 3GHz B0 and, again, I've had no have had no issues. For a 3GHZ boost do: FID=29; DID=1 ; V = 1.28
@SatoshiHirahara Satoshi, thanks for the feedback!
I've had an HP dv7 laptop w/ a 3400m for about 2 years now. At the time I didn't know about the overclocking potential, but once I learned about it I've had it running @ 2.6 any time its on AC. I've torture tested w/ Prime95 and it tops out at 86c after about an hour, but during my normal routine I'll usually max out @ 69.3c according to Open Hardware Monitor - so obviously this chipset has plenty of room to juice over the stock 1.4 and the difference is substantial. It basically turns this chip from solid to burner, all things considered.
@TheMackSparrow Thank you for the fast response! Just got my laptop today, been playing TF2, about to overclock it thanks to your tutorial!
Testing both Macksparrows and Richard128272's setting on my HP DV6 6110us model with AMD A6 3420M processor. So far Macksparrows setting though very useful and informative, caused a blue screen of death for me in about 10 mins. Richards settings however seem to work just fine thus far. Will report back tomorrow after running more tests.
I too tried this with this with my toshiba satellite, same specs as the 2 above. Luckily I used core temp to warn me if it got too hot and put it to sleep. and it did within 5 min. From what I can figure out theres really not too much point since it can overclock itself to 2.5ghz anyway. I can play just about every new game Skyrim, Rage, mw3 on high, Battlefield 3 is the only thing i've had to lower settings for but its still very playable.
@cursedreject This config will bump up the normal processor speed from 1.5 to 2.3. It will also automatically boost up to 2.84 as needed. The highest clock speed it can achieve is the "overclock speed", hence 2.84.
@caseezay Hi Casee yup, that pretty much sums it up. With this overclock, the cpu is running at a base level of 2.3GHz most of the time and kicks itself up to 2.84GHz when a more demanding task is at hand, like gaming or video conversion. However, boosting will only happen if temperature permits; it won't boost up to 2.84GHz if it is too hot. inside!
Hi guys, regarding the voltage issue:
1) If you cannot get 1.35, 1.28 is absolutely fine for B0. Not sure why K10 is acting wacky and not letting you guys select 1.35 but I have tested all the way down to 1.21 for B0 with no issues at all.
2) I cannot make promises but it is highly unlikely that you will damage your laptop by doing this. Remember, out the box, AMD gives the chip a voltage of 1.4 for B0, so we're actually making it run cooler, believe it or not.
Abuals. U r right. Mine has same color upgraded to Windows 8 a night before its release. Mine is overclocked and boosts up to 2.6 GHz. So far it's working great.
@bstore2 Bstore, that's very odd and I've heard from a couple who this has happened to. Try 3 things: 1) uninstall any other overclocking software 2) apply "profile 1" in K10 to reset everything and uninstall K10. 3) Download the latest K10 and reinstall it.
awesome this works like a charm about to try some games
my processor has gone up from 6.5 at preformance index to 6.0!!!!!
it realy works!
there is a way to make a k10stat auto start upon startup/wakeup. make a shourtcut to k10stat and put it in the startup folder located in Start/all programs/startup. after you put it in there go into the k10stat shortcuts properties and at the end of the target data space twice and type in "-loadpstate -nowindow" this will automatically make k10stat startup in profile1. be extremely careful about what profile you put in 1!!! you dont want to auto load into an unstable profile setting!!!
@stones117 Nothing is guaranteed but this configuration seems to be very stable on the A8 chip. I had this same config on my A6-3400M with only 2 crashes in 6 or so months. This being a more advanced chip, it can easily handle this modest overclock, in my opinion. So far so good!
@FunAndJokes Laptop doesnt get hot all, even when gaming. As far as performance, I convert alot of videos to different formats for schoolwork and that has drastically been improved in terms of time taken. I would estimate a 10% improvement.
Too high overclock for my hp 6126sl with A8 3510mx .... it goes at 85°C after 2 minutes of stability test. However thank you, that helped me a lot!
@TehkProductionZ Hi Tehk, this is exactly what overclocking does. Your new base speed will be 2.3GHz. You will see it drop below 2GHz when the cpu is not being used.
4) once you apply the above configuration, you can close K10STAT. No need to keep it open.
5) As far as these errors I am seeing in the comments, I really don't know fellas. I've overclocked 6 of these chips in the last 3 months following the exact steps in this video with no problems. If anything, please make sure your power settings allow the chip to run at these fast speeds. See my next post.
@sergeimeercat You should be able to right-click on the desktop, then click graphics properties which should open a program to adjust video/graphics options, then find a page called cpu power, and adjust it from there. :)
Great video, this is very stable! I have the same laptop and have been searching for a way to make the 6750m the primary card for overclocking. Have you had any luck with this or tried at all? Thanks for the video!
after few testing did not take long. It seems the highest I can get on boost mode B0 is FID23 which is 2.6Ghz maybe I got a crap CPU? oh well at least it is working and it is faster than before for use. I tested it with online CPU Speed testing site so thanks for making the video and hope others will it as helpful as I did.
My friend has a Acer 5560G laptop w/ A6-3400M APU and HD 6650M GPU, I managed to set up his P1 state to 2.6Ghz using FID 24, DID 1 and 1.1375V Voltage and he could play games for 2hrs @90c max (COD 10 which uses 80-95% of CPU time, very intensive load). B0 isn't a big deal since it's just a boost which is used for a short period of time so 3.0Ghz and @1.2875V's not a problem.
The OP here could also try P0 2.6-2.7Ghz (1.15-1.20V) to push it to bounder.
B0: 3.0Ghz
P0: 2.8Ghz
P1: 2.5Ghz
P2: 2.2Ghz
P3: 1.6Ghz
P4: 1.2Ghz
P5: 900Mhz
P6: 800Mhz
и снова я здесь и снова ты помог мне ,спасибо что ты есть
Replace the battery in your smoke detector.
great vid! thanks!
Thanks, great video... the only problem I'm having is similar to bstore2.... at b0, I can't up the voltage past 1.3125. I have a dv6-6135dx and it's brand new, no other overclocking software, and I tried reverting to the default profile and then trying again but again, after selecting 1.350, it just changes back to 1.3125. Any idea why this might be happening? Also, can I run this profile with a voltage of 1.3125 for now, or can I damage something running it that way. Thanks!
hey man it worked when i lowerd the clock, thanx for the reply!
@TheMackSparrow thanks i followed your instructions and it helped
Hey guys, some answers to your questions:
1) Yes, you have to re-apply these settings in K10STATS when you restart or upon sleep wake. One of the small gags of this homemade program, I guess.
2) Yes, this will increase the performance of the GPU because the processor unit can pick up more slack when it is running at higher states.
3) After doing some research, overclocking the gfx card on this HP 6135DX is not worth it. A "safe" overclocking will only yield 1-2+ FPS while +++ voltage by 30%
I just upgraded a clients laptop (hp pavilion g6) from an a4-3300m to the a8-3520m. The benchmarks were a little bit underwhelming for the new processor for me so I overclocked to the 2.2 with 2.86 boost. Prime 95 pumped out 80c after 15 mins and I doubt the client will be using 100% of all cores for longer than that so thats what I left it at. What's interesting is that Windows benchmark was a 7.0 for the processor which means they must have left no headroom what so ever lawls.
hey i've been checking out ur vids and they've been helping. question though... I have AMD A8-3520M APU with Radeon(tm) HD Graphics with AMD Radeon HD 6620G quad core processor...I havent messed with kstat as im not an avid gear head. But the question is, does the AMD overdrive actually overclock my cpu? it feels like it isnt because i think my bios is locking the mhz at 1.6k when the amd overdrive is offering 2.6k mhz. if so how do i unlock it? thanks! and you've earned a sub :D
Works on dv6-6126sl AMD A8 3510MX.
Thank you!
@Quashawn51 Great point... I didn't even notice... in the video, TheMackSparrow tries to put 1.35 for voltage in B0, but it defaults him to 1.2875. It seems everyone is having this issue. I don't know what the consequences of running at a lower voltage in the boosted state are; if anyone can shed any light on this, it would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!
Hey guys I did the overclocked but tweaked the B0 to FID 20 DID 1 and voltage to 1.125 now its hovering around 2.410 and kicks up to 2.8 when needed. Since the 3510mx is at max 2.5 why not 2.4 so when boost is needed to 2.8.
Thx for the guide. These Chips are the best. So far so good.
@TheMackSparrow Hey Mack thanks for the reply. I look forward to a video on this! Good luck working it out.
Are you using the 65W adapter, or did you buy the 95W adapter? I'm not sure of overclocking mine because of the adapter.
@TwilitAssassin121 Twilit, yes! Make sure your AMD power settings in catalyst allow the computer to reach 100%. Sorry forgot to mention this guys.
Acer Asphire 5560-Sb613 A8-3500m/6620g. Did not work on mine using settings provided. After apply/ok was clicked, windows start bar and scramble action and then no program would load to then a bsod. Unsure if under volting it was issue, but it clearly does something to laptops unlike what William Pealer says... It changes the cpu clock multiplier.
I reviewed the video and reversed the settings to get back to what I was and seem to be ok again.
Thank you anyway for the attempt :)
I've tried your settings and it worked but suddenly got a blue screen. Is there anyway you can come up with a stable setting for dv6-6b47dx, amd a8-3500m? Thanks
You're not supposed to use his settings for your laptop, you need to use what works for YOUR laptop. Every CPU is different some can handle higher clocks and lower voltage than others. Just play around, Raise your clocks start higher with your voltage and keep lower your clocks/voltage until you find a stable setting. Make sure that the temp doesn't go over 85 C.
You're still listing it out and saying it works. And, actually, they don't have the same voltage. CPUs are binned with a default voltage to run their rated speed. If they fail to meet that speed, they're given a higher voltage or a lower speed until they work.
I don't know a ton about overclocking so bare with me!
I was wondering, when you checked your speed on CPU-Z, you said it was running at 2.3, but the title says you ended up at 2.84. Is 2.84 when it was maxed out, with lots of stuff running??
@drewnashty It looks like it's a DV6-6117dx. It has 4 gbs of Ram with 512 mb of that going to video.
So far so good here, but quick question. Do you know of any good underclock/undervolt settings? I'd like to have a profile that can save a bit of battery power and save the overclocking profile for the when I'm plugged in.
Remember to disable "PowerNow!" in BIOS.
That was too easy man! thanks again!
@TheMackSparrow Sparrow, I was wondering if you actually run YOUR laptop at 2.3ghz 24/7? Because I was wondering whether or not that would harm the cpu?
same exact one ! and alright ill try it, thanx :)
@TheMackSparrow gfx card? its a radeon 6750m not nvidia gfx!
Records video with a hand held camera and apologizes for the quality, uploads in 1080p.
it just works :D many thank :D
It's not going to stay at 2.8 ghz the whole time, it'll drop if you aren't doing anything processor intensive. But if you run a game or something, it'll jump back up to 2.8
I followed Macksparrow's advice on my Gateway laptop with A8-3500M but saw no change in CPUID (still showed 1.5 - 2.4 range). Further, when I try to run Passmark to see if performance had indeed improved, I get a BSOD with this message :"PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA"...not sure if this is related to the overclock, but it's frustrating. Maybe I'll try Richard's settings.
@TheMackSparrow Why such the drop in voltage? Cooling I assume?
im new to overclocking and ive got some questions. does it matter what FID/DID you use to achieve a frequency? cause you can get the same frequencies using a higher FID and lower DID or lower FID and higher DID, does it matter or is one preferred over the other? is there anything like a rule of thumb to use as low a DID as possible? any pointers would be greatly appreciated
My Toshiba Satellite has the exact same configuration but using your settings and the one provided in the video have caused my computer to crash to a blue screen. Has this ever happened to you?
After reading more about K10 software and just testing. I used all the numbers in the video all but the B0 which is the turbo boost? In any case on my laptop I lowered the B0 to a FID 20, and keep voltage at 1.325 the system works fine. and on CPU-Z i have a base core spped of 2300 and jumps to 2500. I guess I can increase the B0 FID up little at a time till it freeze on me again. but at least I got the base speed to 2.3!
i think i have the same laptop as you. is it stable to run on those settings? you never get any hardware/cpu/heating problems?
feedback would be much apperciated. thanks
@TheMackSparrow man i dont see difference i think the computer its not saving the profile i made any suggestion?
btw excellent video
Hey Macksparrow, i have the same make/model you got, and am just so "dulled out" with the 1.5ghz...is there a way to manually keep or force the turbo boost? (preferably in BIOS)and you're saying that "safe" overclocking is a waste as 30% voltage only gives 1-2 more fps...
Does the settings stay perm or do you have to restart k10 everytime you restart your cpu and also does 3500 mean all the 35 class for the A-8?
Hi, uploader have you tried fusion tweaker? It is another overclocking program for amd a8 llano processors. Plus it has a setting for these to change the settings permanently. Would I use basically the same settings for that?
Hey My computer is a stock dv6-6c48us with A8-3520. It seems to overclock itself when it needs more CPU speed. I open CPU-Z, and look at CPU speed and it idles at 1.6 ghz. If I ask the computer to do something demanding it will alternate between 1.6 and 2.5 Ghz automatically.
If I unplug it it will idle at 800Mhz per core to save battery
I did the settings you did and I have a Amd A8-3520M in my Hp Pavilion Laptop.
It crashed after about 5 minutes
i now see some changes it moved from 1426.68 mhz to 2828.52 mhz i assumed thats over 2.5ghz
Hey when you do this overclock what kind of temps do you see? I overclocked mine to 2.533ghz and 10 minutes of Prime95 got it to 73c...I know this is perfectly acceptable for a desktop but what's the safe range for this laptop??
How about the temps at heavy loads? My 14"laptop goes hot REALLY quick with Overdrive set to 2.0GHZ (3520m). Temps hit 91C if heavy loads continue on 4 cores. I'm not pushing further... Actually, i'm thinking going to 1.8Ghz... (better than nothing)... What do you think?
disable crossfire to get a 6.6 rating on graphics...also k10stat doesn't allow setting the voltage over 1.275,i overclocked mine to 2.6gigs instead a the 2.8 and still got a 7.0 processor rating
What is better an a8-3500m or a8-3520m for overclocking and what program is better fusion tweaker or k10stat pls reply me.
Did exactly step by step as you showed. In the b0 I couldnt up the voltage past 1.275 If I selected higher it would just default to that.
It shows no change though after hitting apply. I got cpuz and it hovers around 1300mhz.
Are you sure you have the same CPU as he does?
It could be many different things, just try lowering the clock little by little :)
@TehkProductionZ Well honestly, I think I can tell a SMAAALLLL, difference in speeds. As for gaming? I doubt this really affects your computers performance. ESPECIALLY since every time k10stat is exited and then opened again the cpu goes back to profile 1 in k10stat. If theres any change in performance its minimal, I still have k10 but dont feel compelled to use it because the increase JUST ISN'T THERE.
Hey i too have a DV7-6C20US.. bought in june 2012 i guess.. how is it going? mine is steel grey... what about u?
Would it be possible to set the P0 to a higher value while ignoring the B0 value completely? Say if you'd like to have it run constantly at like 2.8 ghz, would it be possible?
another thing, you said put 1.35 in B0 but you put 1.2875 in your video so which one is better
d
@RacingRyan0 all 1080p videos should load slower than lower res videos o.o
@101schmitty101 100% agree, thanks schmitty
I'm using HP Pavilion dv-6c20us with A8-3520 APU. I bought it last July 2012 and I right away upgraded it with Windows 8 Pro. I tried it ran & it showed me an error not BSOD but something interrupted the Windows & it restarted it, Thank GOD nothing happened, but I wanted to try. Win 8 task manger shows every performance of your hw installed RAM, CPU & all. It looks like it does not work for Win 8.Have you tried on Win 8? On CPUid I did see higher speed but not on consistent basis. It doesnt work
i have a dv6 6b47dx comes with A8 3510mx
i see my stock voltages are lower than those you had on stock
is it still safe to use the overclock ? any particular setting you can share?
