Yes, very informative vid! Thanks so much for sharing your time and advice. I was thinking about picking up a used radio for my boat but...not if the MMSI registration number needs to be changed for/to a new user. I'll skip that process. You just helped me with that decision! The lake is way high right now - surpassed 2017 levels. As always people, play safe on the waters!
Actually, I've since learned that here in Canada, the registered user of an MMSI can be transferred. I had to do that when we bought the current #Boogaboo. I'll try and do an update video on that process...

Shmerpy No worries, man. Sometimes I gotta shake my head when watching videos as well. In the future, I'm gonna try to be a little more 'location specific' when it comes to these types of vids.

Well done. I am a scanner listener and took my VHF radio course from PCS in Toronto in 2010 and also have my DSC endorsement. Unfortunately, I don't have a DSC radio and only an older VHF handheld and I am also a ham radio operator, which gave me a leg up with some of the calling procedures and phonetic alphabet.
Nice to hear the old CMB at the beginning of the video too, rather than the current computerized copy and paste voice which we hear as of 2016. Love your videos and keep up the great work.
Sounds like you have more knowledge on correct procedures than 96.94% of the operators we ever hear on the radio. Can be very frustrating listening to some of the exchanges coming over the airwaves :-/ It's too bad that the only place in Ontario that the average boater can go for a radio course is through the Power Squadron. I'm sure that for many - myself included - that is constraining and reason #1 for not taking the course. Don't know why it's not offered online. . .
And yes, the old human voices providing updates could be a hoot. One didn't know if their command of one of our two official languages could make for some humorous (and even confusing) reports. Recalling a particular NOTMAR safety bulletins from back in the day (which seemed to repeat through much of one season), I still hear/say 'Pigeon Lake' as Pigggon Lake ;-)

Very informational. I have ordered a Standard Horizon GX2200B. It is in the Mail. Your video game me a heads up. Now have a MMSI # through boatus. The security part for the MMSI change is interesting. I'm getting it refurbished. It will be interesting. This technology is as good as radar, and complements it when combined. Even little boats need this onboard.

Thanks Paul. Very informative. we also have a portable for use on the SeaDoo, and it's modern...but the VHF on the big boat needs to be upgraded. Thanks for 'splainin' I will make sure to incorporate these features properly when I buy and install.

When we got our boat I took a Canadian Power & Sail Squadron course on VHF - was very informative and really helped to know the correct radio protocol. They were saying that 90% of users just don't know how to use the radio correctly. Highly recommend it! Paul, great vids ... truly enjoying them and following your adventures
Hello, 'Ohana, glad to have you aboard :-) I'd have to agree with those figures regarding VHF radio 'unworthiness'. My favorites are the little kid playing on the radio, the guy who keys the mic and forgets about it for the longest time, and #1, the person who has to repeatedly call everyone he/she knows over and over, without any replies . . . Fortunately, the Coast Guard has about as much patience and usually shuts them down after awhile.
Sadly, it corresponds to the 50% of boater who are, ahh, less than adept at running/docking their vessels :-( Thanks for following along on our grand adventure I'm sure you are aware of our plans to sell the house (working on that right now) and move aboard our boat full time next season . . ? Your following along helps us with that goal :-)
And, speaking of 'Ohana, I have a fun little video that I'll be sharing later this week of our encounter with a not-so-little boat by the same name, taken earlier this year in sunny Florida. Stay tuned . . .
***** Yes I'm aware of your grand adventure - sorry to hear of the reason behind it but happy for you that you have the opportunity to do so. We are about the same age and we have the great loop on our bucket list. Although I don't think I would do it on our 340 - would like a 40' sedan bridge for that trip. We currently are boating the Rideau Canal ... so your Trent-Severn videos are interesting for the similarity and that a trip to Georgian Bay is on the list in a couple of summers.
I think I've seen the 'Ohana you are referring to ... my 340 would be the tender for it! :) We thought it was a very unique name, were disappointed to find out that someone else had the same thought!

When I got a handheld a few years ago, they (transport Canada) gave me an MMI, not an MMSI, because I didn't have a boat at the time. Then when I got the boat a couple of years later, they gave me an MMSI for the boat, leaving the older MMI still assigned to the handheld.
Cool. As I believe I mentioned in the video, my handheld was the very first in Canada to get an MMSI assigned to it. As you can imagine, it took a bit of explaining to Transport Canada the what's and why-for's ;-)

DSC is problematic with handhelds in that handhelds so equipped are really linked to the one boat. If you switch boats then you can't use that handheld VHF because DSC will misidentify the boat.

What I got from this video: Canadians want to have 2 MMSI numbers!! If you get 2 all US will demand 3... and... WAKE UP CANADIANS!!!! lolololololol
No, my friend, what I was referring to was the fact that since I have two, separate DSC capable radios, I chose to get separate MMSI numbers for them. Keep in mind that each radio is 'assigned' to the vessel that it is associated with. So, for me, the fixed mounted VHF radio has an MMSI number that carries the description for the big boat. The portable radio is associated with our inflatable dinghy.
Reason for this is that in an emergency, the Coast Guard, marine police or even other #boaters would be searching for the type of vessel associated with the radio registered to that particular #boat. It would be kinda useless if I initiated the automated distress call from our dinghy and have the Coast Guard looking for a 40 foot cruiser, don't you think??
And you thought all of us Canadians were asleep ;-)
