  • Fort Bragg, California. Every year we have a family or two of Coastal Deer show up in our field. This year so far, two does two fawns and later we should see a buck or two.
Coastal deer in California typically refer to populations of the California mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus californicus), a subspecies of mule deer. These deer are commonly found along the coastal regions of California, ranging from the northwestern coast near Oregon down to the central coast near Santa Barbara.
These deer are crepuscular, meaning they are most active during the early morning and late afternoon. They tend to stay near water sources and are often seen browsing along the edges of forests and clearings.
Natural predators of coastal deer include mountain lions, coyotes, and bobcats. Human activities such as urban development, habitat fragmentation, and vehicle collisions also pose significant threats.
The coastal regions provide a rich and diverse ecosystem for these deer, but they are also sensitive to changes in their environment, making conservation efforts important.
