I’ve never seen anyone review this novel. When I read it many years ago I found it fantastic and fantastical. Instead of drawing me out of the story the magical realism pulled me into its humanity. At the time, and I was young, the gravity of the political subtext washed over me-yet the residue of the political and social devastation on the people in the novel left me with a necessary and haunting unease that came back to me much later. It was a difficult read much like reading a recounting of a dreamworld. I read this for school so did not know this was a trilogy. I just knew I loved this book. It definitely twisted my head.
Ooh this sounds like a book I need to get to asap ! This sounds amazing ! Fab review man !
I’m so happy you enjoyed it as much as I did. My mum, who read it back when it came out, kept disturbing me to get it for her, so I did, and just before giving it to her read it and was enthralled!
🙌
Did you read the sequels? Love to know your thoughts!
Thanks for reviewing. I have a copy myself and look forward to hearing your views on the rest of the trilogy
I agree, this was great and I want to pick up the next one soon, I think maybe one this month one next month...
Your analysis is so spot on and insightful. 👏👏👏 I also absolutely loved this book. It has one of the best final lines of a book I have ever read.
Thank you 😊 I cannot wait to jump into the sequels. Have you read them?
I’m hyped for this Kieran!!!
After Ngugi wa Thiong’o you should jump on this one!
@@KDbooks that's the plan! this and kintu are on my list.
Sounds interesting as a trilogy looks like your hooked. Great to see!
I am hooked! Now I need to find a time to jump into the sequel
Damn it, Kieran! Why you gotta keep adding books to my TBR? 😂😂
I didn't know it was part of a trilogy. Need to stick this higher on my list of books to read. Brilliant review.
I love dialogue like the sort you read out. It's like you have your ear to the door trying to hear it as closely as possible
💯
Great review but shocked to hear it was 91 as that means I read it 30 years ago! I can still remember that I thought the first couple of paragraphs were beautiful. I also read the second book but for some reason the third is still unread on the shelf so I hope your reading it makes me pick it up!
I have an exam about this in a couple of days thank you so much
Good luck mate 👊 Hope it goes well
@@KDbooks thank you sm! 🙏🏼
So when will you finish reading the trilogy?
It feels odd seeing you do a positive review for once - like I was genuinely surprised when you started saying nice things about the book 😭🤣
