  • Family Fishing Fun provides an introduction to spinning reels used for fishing. We try to answer the following common questions from beginners. What are the parts that make up a spinning reel? Why does my fishing line coil off when I open the bail? What are the different sizes of reels? Are there left and right hand spinning reels? What is drag, and how is it set? How to spool a spinning reel with fishing line.

    Very nicely explained in a comprehensive n simple way thanks bro i love fishing n i recently bought a 6ft classic series rod n reel but fumbling to use it dont know abt it i m accustomed with casters this video is helping me alot

      Very glad we were able to help. I think the biggest revelation for me was that larger diameter spinning reel spools, in general, have less problems. I used to think, "small line, small spool", now I think more "how big of a spool can I get away with on this rod?" Thanks again for watching! I hope you enjoy your spinning reel and I hope these tips help you avoid lots of hours of tangled line and frustration!

    Without knowing how braid acts in wind and other factors, I caught hell the first couple of times using braid. Wind knots, random knots, and it wrapping around the pole with the lightest breeze, but the casting ability, strength and sensitivity that braid gives is amazing.

    thanks for your invite to ask questions! i’m an absolute beginner. i have a shakespeare seven foot salmon rod, lake or sea in wa. i think it’s 12lb test, can take up to 20. i went to cast for practice and the line unspooled. i couldn’t get it back. what did i do wrong? i reeled and reeled, but the line wasn’t spooling up. is that the anti-reverse? does it need to have tension on it? what’s the best way to bring up slack without a tangle?

    • @FishingFamilyFun
      @FishingFamilyFun  3 роки тому

      Yes, if the reverse is turned on, it's possible to reel backwards and the line will never go back on. Also, you want a little tension or the line can just spin and create tangles. Lastly, if the drag is all the way off, it's possible to reel without making much progress reeling on the line.

    Excellent info. I am beginner and I have not a single fish in past 3 weeks. I don’t know if my hooks or spoons are right. I am in Toronto, Canada. Want to catch a fish before winter.

      Up there, you probably have a host of different fish than we have here in the south of the US. I would guess you have some smallmouth bass, muskie, pike, walleye and maybe some salmon. When my wife and I are having a hard time catching a fish, we use small lures, or switch to live bait. I would imagine a small minnow on a float would catch fish anywhere there are predators. We fish 4-6lb line and small lures often, but not sure you can get away with such light line, since you've got all those toothy critters in the water. If you're able, try to fish areas that funnel fish, or make great ambush points. One of my favorite areas is a overpass/bridge. I hope this helps! Let me know if you catch some fish!

      Sorry for the late reply. This is a classic, in my book, it's an All-Star 7' (the brand is still sold at Academy Sports, but I believe they are now owned by Shakespeare or someone like that, and are no longer made with the same process).

    As a beginner, after watching this, I still don’t know how to cast, the difference between open nail and closed bail, how to spoil a line onto the reel. All I got was your preference for a larger reel on a small set-up. How is that a beginner’s guide?

    • @FishingFamilyFun
      @FishingFamilyFun  3 роки тому +1

      The beginner guide was based the questions I was asked often when I worked at a sporting goods store. Most starter reels come with line, but I'd original intended to make a video just about putting line on. Casting, you put the line under your index finger, flip the bail over with your other hand, then when you cast the lure, let go of the line with your index finger. I hope this helps.

    Hi, I'm new in Fishing and I'm kind of lost here in terms of equipment to purchase, I live in Puerto Rico and I would like to start inSpinning fishing in shore, what do You recommend Rod / Reel?

    • @FishingFamilyFun
      @FishingFamilyFun  3 роки тому

      Personally, I prefer the brand Pflueger for price & quality. I've had a Presidente for almost 8 years and never done any maintenance besides cleaning the outside and changing line. www.tacklewarehouse.com/Pflueger_President_Spinning_Reel/descpage-PPSS.html?from=ikedup
      I like a 7ft. rod. Two good actions are medium and medium light. Abu Garcia actually makes a travel rod with interchangeable tips (Medium and Medium Light actions) www.tacklewarehouse.com/Abu_Garcia_IKE_Signature_Series_Travel_Spinning_Rod/descpage-AGIS.html?from=ikedup

      I'm sorry, I missed that this was inshore fishing. I would recommend getting a reel that is designed for saltwater, but I fish mostly freshwater.

    i'm new to fishing, recently purchased a penn pursuit 3, each time i attempt to cast the line just bird nest out of the reel, i've learned from you video its called line memory, also the bait dosn't go far , for the mose it will go about 4 feet. cant you give me some tips plz

    • @FishingFamilyFun
      @FishingFamilyFun  3 роки тому

      Sorry that I'm replying after so long. I have another video about birds nests. Be sure you're using a line that's not too thick. Monofilament is more forgiving than fluorocarbon. Depending on what you're fishing for (I mostly fish for sunfish like bass), I don't like anything over 10lb on a spinning reel.

    The first rod which u use was of which brand...??

    • @FishingFamilyFun
      @FishingFamilyFun  6 років тому

      The first rod is a Shakespeare micro, I've owned this rod for almost 15 years, so not sure it's available. The reel on that rod is a Browning, my wife and I have had issues with this reel (the handle comes off). We have another Browning where the line reels in between the drag and the spool, so I would be wary of these. The second rod, I believe is still available, it's a Phlueger, we got it at bass pro, but I think they have something comparable available on their website www.pfluegerfishing.com/pflueger-combos-spinning-combos/pflueger-trion-spinning-combo/1315408.html without the blue colors.

    Your explanations of the “5.1:2” or the label on the reel itself is very obscured; I still do not understand a single word of it. I do not know what the number represent or what is it for...:(

    • @FishingFamilyFun
      @FishingFamilyFun  3 роки тому

      5.1:1 means If you turn the handle one time, the bail (which puts the line on the reel) turns 5.1 times. The number after the colon is always 1, as it always represents 1 turn of the handle. A 7:1 reel will take line in 2x as fast as a 3.5:1. You can't say how many inches, as the diameter of the spool and the amount of line on the spool dictate how much line gets wrapped on the spool as it's wound back on.
