This is the first NASCAR race that I ever went to. Loved every bit of it! Haven't been to a race since the 1999 race at Michigan.

And this is the race where the tradition of kissing the bricks began

Where Kyle Petty hit the inside wall after blowing his tire in turn four was exactly where Swede Savage crashed in 1973, Bobby Unser and Mike Mosley slammed into three parked cars in 1971, and where Dave MacDonald crashed when both he and Eddie Sachs were killed in the 1964 race. Fortunately, the angle of that wall was removed after the 1973 crash, or this crash, as well as other IndyCar crashes that occurred in the same area, might have been even worse. To this day, that's the worst crash in the history of the Brickyard 400, and it was very lucky that both Petty and Sterling Marlin escaped serious injury in that one.

@Andrew McFadden He did sit out the races at Michigan and Bristol and was replaced for those two races by Jim Sauter, though he did run at Watkins Glen, the same race in which Dale Earnhardt won the pole position (his final pole position) with the broken collarbone he suffered at Talladega the week before this race.

Compare this crowd to the 2017 race. It illustrates the current state of NASCAR. Need I say more?

NASCAR heading in a different direction, the wrong one. Drivers of today, do not compare to the drivers during this era.

It's not just the drivers. It's the changes they made to the race format

RYR was making some strong ass engines for the 88 and 28 back then, sometimes they were a little too hot, I can remember both cars engines grenading in the same race. Spectacular HP though..lol

now dis was truly da hardest day of Dale Earnhardt's entire career, u can just hear da pain in his voice at both 17:10 and at 19:10-19:19:15, he was completely torn aprt having 2 relinquish his car. He at least came back for da next race at Watkins Glen and won da pole, dat's who Dale Earnhardt always was, a tough man's hero, his death as most say is never a tragedy, he died doing what he was best at, he will forever live in NASCAR and in hearts of those whose lives he touched including mine.
