This song itself is serious. It was protest song from the 60's.
It's from the 70's
@@dcummings4834 If I wanted to be petty, I could point out that decades run from 1 to 10 (1961 - 1970). So, technically...But, yeah, I missed it by a year. Still, very much a 60's vibe
@@jefferyparker4277
Still mostly sh:tty music from that time plus all the useless hippies.
He wrote it on a road trip to CA and the scenery was obscured by so many billboards
Yes, original done by Five Man Electrical Band and released in 1971, but Pushed HARD by the GenX'rs when released by Tesla in 1990. 80s teens were BIG On Acceptance of ALL Good people No matter how they Looked on the Outside.
This has all gone way too far NOW. WE FOUGHT FOR EQUAL RIGHTS FOR LONG HAIRED HIPPIES AND ALL SORTS.. But we NEVER imagined the mentally ill would be released from the INSANE ASYLUMS and begin Running this Free Country. ... ... ...
Since the late 90s Being PRESENTABLE has gone out the window With SANITY.
This is NOT a silly song, it's a serious song that they covered for a Live recording. Great message!
Great message of you don’t want to put out effort in life. Go to work. I owe you nothing.
@@Qpoueoor Pulling your own weight has nothing to do with the message.
@@Qpoueoor lololol that's Not the Message though 😁 DON'T JUDGE PEOPLE ON LOOKS ALONE! ❤️😁🔥💯
@@da_blade5040 i love when foolish people try to tell other foolish people what a song is about, and i love it even more when the foolish people argue over who is right and try to prove each other wrong. How is it possible in 2022 that not every single human who has half a functioning brain doesn´t realize every song has 75 different meanings to about100 different people.? People, I hate to break it to you, you´re not smarter than the guy who thinks this song has a different meaning than you think it does, you didn´t solve any riddle and you don´t understand songs better than everyone else. Art is here for interpretation, how one interprets it typically has to do with ones past experiences and sometimes just a situation one went through while hearing this song when he was younger. There is some schmuck out there who believes this song has to do with signs on a beach and he will argue that point until the day he dies because when he was 15 years old with his buddies the beach patrol chased them off the beach at 11 pm pointing at the signs that said no beach access after 5 pm....btw they were preppies, short hair and dressed well. In short, every song mean something different to everyone else.
Seems like a great message until you get some property and don’t want people trespassing on it…
The Most Underrated Band of the 80s and still going strong. Amazing songs. Thank you for listening to this one.
yessir, i seen them live recently and it was awesome
Think it literally means he's tired of signs everywhere, telling him what to do, how to to it, and when to do it. Your right, should be paying attention while driving but there are freakin signs everywhere!!! Lol. So damn true! This song was so right after all!!!
Lex, I complemented you the other day for absolutely nailing the lyrical content of one song.
Today, good Lord, you couldn’t have been more off base.
This song was originally done by a band called Five Man Electric Band, in the late ‘60’s. It was a monster counter culture/ protest song.
Tesla covered it in 1990, on an album called Five Man Acoustic Jam. And the point was basically that over 20 years later, nothing really had changed. But the song was NO JOKE. This was a serious protest anthem. Tesla spiced it up a bit with a little aggressive language, but it is probably what the original guys wanted to say anyhow, but ‘signs’ would’ve prohibited that.
Les driving on the historical Route 66 in California was horrified by the sad amount of Billboard Signs blocking out the scenery. Also on the trip, he, who had late 60's hair, was told he could not enter a couple of places, due to his "looks". When he returned home to Canada, he wrote down his adventures.
She kind of got it at the end of her response. Telling us what we can/can't do. What we HAVE to do if we want to do something.
How or where did people protest with this song? I don't remember any of that.
@@garrett6064 The concept of the song is, in & of itself ‘protest’. Not that the song inspired throngs of people to protest.
The existence of signs everywhere telling people where to go, how to live, etc…
@@Willie_McBride yeah, without those throngs of people it's really just him complaining about too many signs. Everything out of the 60's and early 70's doesn't have to be labeled a 'protest' song.
Actually this is an anti-establishment Anthem released in 1970, by Canadian Band, The Five Man Electrical Band, and became an anthem for a generation.
I Remember them!! ❤️
@@da_blade5040 The writer and lead guitarist just passed away, RIP Les.
@@toddstevens13 That's Sad 😢😢😢
@@da_blade5040 It is, so many great players and singers have gone lately.
@@toddstevens13 I know...right Suxx! Now we lost Meatloaf 😢 It's so Sad
This was recorded at a bar in Philadelphia while they were on tour in the early 90's (with Motley Crue I think). They took a couple of their free days on the tour and booked gigs at some local bars to do a full acoustic set. Of the 5 shows they did like this, this is the only one that got recorded and then released as a live album called "Five Man Acoustical Jam" in a tribute to the original writers of this song the Five Man Electrical Band. This is by far my favorite live album ever with all the covers and even how their own big hits change when they perform the acoustic. The best one from this show for my money is the version of "Love Song" they perform. I know you have already reacted to the music video/studio version of that song, but the acoustic is a lot better in my ever so humble opinion.
It was recorded at the Trocadero a music venue that holds 1200 people . The Tesla album 5 man acoustical jam kicked off the mtv unplugged rage in the early 90's .
The best part of the acoustic version is when they come in with the electric guitar during the main solo, hard to convey that emotion with the acoustic.
@@billwicketvogel1787 Sadly it closed. I frequented the venue as a teen and muh later found out my grandfather used to go there when it was burlesque.
@@hmpz36911 yes I know that is closed a few years ago. Philly has changed so much. That's really interesting about your grandfather! Awesome
@@billwicketvogel1787 Dude I went to South Street a few months ago and barely recognized the place. Then I realized that the last time I was really down there was around 2008 to see G.B.H. and Anvil.
Not sure how one can think this isnt a serious song. The lyrics are right on screen for you
Lex is not the lyric person. She just rides the music.
All the things in the song are things black folk heard during segreation days.
@@TanisHalf-Elven a lot of people have heard these things from a lot of different people. I think that's the point of the song right?
Very Under rated band from the 80's/90's IMO. These guys were very good musicians and song writers. It's a shame that they didn't get the recognition they deserved.
On point. They came along at the tail end of ‘Hair Metal’ (of which I’m also a huge fan) and they got pigeonholed into that genre when they were really so much more than that. I’d say that the band Great White had a similar situation. Arrived on scene around the same time, were lumped in as a wannabe hair band, but were actually an OUTSTANDING Bluesy Rock Band. The unfortunate tragedy in the Rhode Island Nightclub notwithstanding.
@@Willie_McBride absolutely. Both bands never really got a chance once everyone started trashing the Hair Metal scene. Another band was Slaughter but they fit that scene a little better...lol
@@carmelaruck7116 Great White’s House of Broken Love! Is fantastic Jack Russell such a great dirty sleazy bluesy vocalist.
You do know they didn't write this song right?
@@lunax71 Yes I know this was a cover of Five Man Electrical Band.
Tesla started the acoustic concert fad that ran into the 90's. The concert was recorded at a club in Philly (The Trocodero, I think)
Ive seen Tesla 5 times through the years…great band…not a hair band not a metal band just a great Rock Band…they are still releasing material…
This was a cover of a Canadian band - Five Man Electric Band from the 70's (?)
Tesla performed this acoustic set in 1990 at a theater in Philly... it was recorded live and released that yr as the 'Five man acoustical jam' album and 'Signs' actually became a hit single after 'Love song' off their previous album.
60’s…
Tesla is my all time FAVORITE band, 2021 made 13 times I’ve seen them live since their debut year (1st row) in 1986!!!!! They still sound just like that !!! Great reaction…. Now u’ll be noticing all the different Signs Signs everywhere Signs!!
This song is a comment on society in the early 1970’s by the Five Man Electrical Band.
I had the privilege to see them in concert some years ago. Love Song is one of my favs but when they did Signs...everyone in the arena was scream singing & we all felt the same thing: fck da man!!! 😂
Honestly don’t think this was a joke, it’s a lighthearted song about shrinking freedoms made to make you think. The 60’s & 70’s started using music to get the masses to question government and societal conventions
and the sign says you got to have a proper mask to get inside. Song still seems relevant today
You probably have to live through this period in order to really appreciate it. During this time Tesla stripped down from most of the the electric stuff and pretty much started the Unplugged series that aired on MTV. This was from the 5 Man Acoustical Jam album. Many bands followed doing their songs unplugged.... One of my favs is Caught Up In A Dream, Heaven Nine Eleven, Song & Emotion, and Freedom Slaves..... My favorite band!
Great band and very underrated. My favorite... Modern Day Cowboy!!!
Tesla! Definitely do more Tesla.
While out on tour, when they had days off, they would book club gigs under an assumed name. In other words, Tesla was NOT on the marquee. They decided to record one and release it as an album.
One of the best things about you guys , you don't fool around, you jump right into the song. Others have rhymes, dances and overall looking for a little spotlight. Thanks guys !
I totally agree, so (most) other reactors have a way to long intro, I just hit skip ahead to the start of the song, I like how Brad and lex just get right to it....
Tesla covered this so well....... and to this day it still stands true, every word, every sign.
The Brad back and forth sway in full effect! Tesla's first album is one of the best debut albums ever.
Thanks guys!
Please, please, PLEASE react to Tesla's tribute to Steve Clarke.
Frank Hannon of Tesla and Steve Clarke of Dep Leppard created a bond while touring together.
When Steve noticed how much Frank loved the sound of the Gibson SG guitar, Steve gave him one.
Frank said no one ever gave him a guitar before.
After Steve died (way too early) Tesla wrote SONG AND EMOTION as a tribute to Steve.
And they composed the guitar style as Steve would have played it.
This was a protest song from 1970. I always thought they wanted to protest segregation signs without actually mentioning them.
Five Man Acoustical Jam was a terrific album.
"Signs" is a song by the Canadian rock group "Five Man Electrical Band" 1970. Tesla spin was " 5 Man Acoustical Jam"
Tesla & Firehouse was the first concert i went to without my parents
I'll always have love for this song
This song was recorded during a "unplugged live" performance. Before everyone else started doing unplugged live performances... The original was performed by the "Five man Electrical Band", this unplugged album was titled the "Five man Acoustical Jam". It is not a joke song
When I was 15 back in 1982, I was a long haired freaky type. I got a job, sight unseen over the phone, at Chucky Cheeses, and when i showed up for work They put me in the furry suit where I wouldn't scare the moms. After the first shift I went back to the break room to get my stuff and leave, and there was a big sign on the board that said "Long haired freaky people need not apply!".
That's funny. In the 90s, i was at a job interview. The job was a slamdunk, i kinda knew the boss, knew many of the workers, and had years of experience at literally all areas of the business. Interview went awesome, then, he asked, "how do you feel about cutting your hair?". I answered, "i don't!". And that was that, on to the next one.
If you really dig this track I'd suggest checking out the entire album sometime. Tesla: Five Man Acustical Jam is great.
RIP Les Emmerson.....writer of this song and front man of the Five Man Electrical Band.....passed away this last December in the Ottawa Valley
so glad you reacted to this version instead of the sanitized radio version where they replaced the word 'fucking' with 'blocking'
This Song represents what we heard our neighbors and family purring down men with long hair.We as children loved it sang it.We didn't agree with the adults but we couldn't say crap.
This song is a remake of a major hit by the Canadian band. 5 man electrical band. Released in 1971 and became an anthem of a generation. Canada ❤❤❤❤
Good cover of the Five Man Electrical Band. Always loved how the Tesla album was called the Five Man Acoustical Jam.
Miles Away is a great song, with great lyrics and meaning.
from the concert that really started the Unplugged trend 🤘 Five Man Acoustical Jam
Great version! Love this song, reminds me of high school lol
Just bought Tesla tickets today for June outside of Sacramento.. pretty excited it's my first time seeing one of my favorite bands from the 80's
The 5 man electrical band`s original version is awesome as well.
Back when I was 15-21 yrs old and going to a lot of concerts in the Knoxville Tn area in the 80's , Tesla and Cinderella were the opening acts on soooo many shows , and often put the Headliner act to shame .
Little Suzi and Modern Day Cowboy are my favorite Tesla songs .
Y’all are great! Check out Tesla - Paradise (Lex, you’ll love the guitar duets!!) and Heaven’s Trail as well.
Great tune! Still rings true!
I love this version!
A few Tesla songs to check out are; "cummin' atcha live" "modern day cowboy", "hang tough", "makin' magic", and "little Suzi", among other great songs from them
In 1990 Tesla were on tour with Mötley Crüe, for whom they were opening US dates in promotion of the album Dr. Feelgood. On June 2, a day off occurred, during which the band decided to put on an acoustic show in which each member would choose a different cover to perform. Singer Jeff Keith decided on Signs, a song by the Five Man Electrical Band he grew up listening to in Oklahoma. However, his bandmates did not know the piece, so Keith gave a copy to each of them so they could learn it. [6]
The performance was so successful that Tesla decided to repeat it again for a couple of charity dates, including one at the Trocadero Theatre in Philadelphia, on July 2, that the band decided to record almost by chance, for personal use and consumption only. A few months later a local radio began to broadcast the recording of Signs performed by the group that evening, which quickly became in demand by listeners, triggering a real word of mouth among fans who pressured the record company to publish the entire concert.
The album was released in November under the title Five Man Acoustical Jam, in homage to the name of the Five Man Electrical Band that had composed that Signs capable of allowing the immediate distribution of the album in stores. [6] The single became Tesla's biggest chart success and pushed the album to #12 on the Billboard 200 in the United States. [7]
As has been said. This was a very serious song in its time. If you had long hair and a bell bottom jean you were a target. Signs not allowing you in stores or bars. Even signs not allowing you in parks. I lived in those times and i would always get people driving by throwing eggs at me because of my appearance. So Ya this was a rebellion song for sure.
Clearly from your reaction the song did exactly what it was supposed to do!
lol...this song brings back some memories. this one here is a cover but at the time the original came out, i got my 1st ride on a mini enduro. i was so short then that the seat on a yamamha 90 came up to my eye level! lol verg good stuff!
Another blast from the past. I love it!!! Tesla was amazing and Jeff Keith had the sexiest voice!
I highly recommend Modern Day Cowboy and EZ Come EZ Go. BANGERS!
This is one of the lyrically great songs and one I regularly sing to myself when driving
They covered the Beatles “we can work it out “ live also !! Awesome cover!!
Not a silly song in the least. And recorded live at the Trocadero in Philly. I was lucky enough to have been there that night. One of the greatest acoustic sets ever recorded.
This is from a live performance recorded for a live album. It was made in a small Philadelphia venue. If you react to more Tesla the versions from the “live acoustical jam” performance are just incredible.
what you give is my fav from Tesla. Not sure if yall have reacted to it, but it's one of the greatest ballads ever!
This takes me straight back to high school- riding around with friends in a jeep with doors off just singing along….
Keep going down the Tesla rabbit hole. Absolutely the most underrated and best band from the 80’s
Back in the 60s and early 70s, guys with long hair were frowned upon by some. For some reason, they thought it was a big deal. This song was about that and rules in general. It was out in 71, Tesla redid it in 91
Brad I agree with you completely about signs painted on the road " they are backwards " you know what I mean
This is played at the legendary troc in Philadelphia pa, I was there couple hundred people, tesla sold out the spectrum that sat 15000 people they recorded out of the blue full on acoustic awesome
They did it before MTV started the Unplugged series.
Basically started the Unplugged series.
Tesla Live are an Amazing band .🎼 Rock N Roll at it's very best. Phenominal Lead 🎸Guitarist🎸.3x Live in Colorado USA🎼🎼🎼🎼🎼
Check out the Forever More album. They were famous before their time. I went to their show one time and Jeff Keith the lead singer drove my drunk ass home in his RV. Were from the same hometown Granite Bay, CA and grew up with his kids
It was written in response to the massive increase in advertising commercial property. With the highway building explosion of the 1960’s. Which leads into another similar protest song “Superhighways “ by Ballin’Jack.Another great listen .
I love this song. The lyrics are spot on, right to the point. As another comment says, is such a great protest song.
Yes definately lisen to the original version of this & as others said back in that time it was a song about the opression of things & peaple in society which is why it became such a hit cause of its message.
Saw them live and they were sooo good!!!
Silly but so true. It makes me think of a nice scenic ride ruined by the damn signs everywhere.
Hey love you guys - throwing it out
Five Man Acoustical Jam is a great album and yes it was made in a bar.
This was written by Bob Dylan....Awesome song and Tesla is an awesome band!!!
Y’all are kicking on all 8 cylinders!!
Great picks lately
This is a cover song from a 60's group called The 5 man Electrical Band
Belive it or not my local radio station used to play the unedited version of this all the time.
It came out in the 60's/70's about the clash between the hippies and the establishment
Love this song!
ooo I love this cover!
Tesla Amazing Band 👏 Great live music 🎶 🎵 🙌
Would NOT consider this song silly.
One of my favs from Tesla!!
Isn't it interesting that science shows the colors red and yellow induce hunger. McDonald's, Wendy's, Burger King, Arby's, Carl's Jr./Hardees, In-n-Out, all include these colors. Advertisers use signs to constantly trigger unconscious reactions from us.
Great Song, Original and Cover
Love Song from this same concert is a good listen
It's a cover song. The original song is from 1971 from a band called Five Man Electric Band.
This was from a cover stream they did.
You should go in front of your management office and BLAST this song LOLOL
(When you're moving out... of course)
Great band, great song.
A bit of enlightenment for those suggesting that this was the inspiration for Mtv Unplugged:
That show was actually inspired by Jon Bon Jovi's and Richie Sambora's acoustic performance on the '89 Music Video Awards.
I love this song!!!!! Tesla is a great band!!!!
Tesla has some great songs, What you Give is great !
Song and Emotion is a great Tesla song
Yes, the changed up the lyrics a bit from the original by the Five Man Electrical Band ( out of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada). The original was "BLOCKIN' OUT THE SCENERY" (not F***ing Up" And then when he makes his own "LITTLE sign" (again NOT "f***ing sign") NO way would the radio play it back then with how Tesla did it here! Lol!
this was originally recorded at the ritz in nyc but when it was released 'recorded live a the ritz's nyc' was crossed out and they used the philly recording instead,,don't know why.
Stayed for the song, left because of your comments.
The Five Man Electrical Band was the first band to record "Signs". Tesla did the cover.
Its a cover they play live in a bar, the álbum was 5 men in acoustic guitar. Tesla is infravalorator Band, you should listen the álbum The Great Radio Controversy
Love Tesla. This song is great but try the live version of Love Song and What You Give for goosebumps and Cumin Atcha Live for sheer power! Also the whole of Mechanical Resonance us pure fire The production is great on this
They are not joking in the song, it is a remake of a song that expressed how people were feeling in the late 60s society
"Little country store with a sign tacked to the side
Said, "No L O I T E R I N G allowed"
Underneath that sign always congregated quite a crowd"
