they actually meant to double track some bass parts using a distortion pedal for the noisier sections but ran out of time in studio so the producer of this record actually ran the original (more clean sounding) bass track through a reel to reel tape machine to layer on top as and that's what gives it that awesome sort of cheap sounding distortion
