I was looking for a plug with in-depth energy monitoring functionality but all variants (TP-Link etc) are either very expensive or out of stock. These budget plugs (£35 for 4) come with excellent software which is easy to use but also provides basic daily energy consumption stats. Lovely stuff!!
We now use eight of these around the house and they have become a part of our daily routines from making tea in the morning to waking up our son to more data related uses such as saving energy on equipment and monitoring how much we spend on boiling water. All very exciting stuff.
Hopefully, you find this video useful if you're new to smart plugs and are considering whether to buy any or not. If you liked the video, please consider subscribing or just give me a thumbs up.

This video saved my life
I tell you what these are ace I've even melted one into the twin socket outlet and it still works!!!
Basically I plugged my blow up hot tub into it so it can remotely switch off on a schedule.
But yh it melted so i couldn't remove it but still had all it's uses.
Very impressive for the price
I’m not sure whether to laugh as that sounds like it could be pretty dangerous. Not good at all!! 🙂
We have the Tapo TP-Link Tapo P110 Mini Smart Wi-Fi Plug - Energy Monitoring so far we have 8 of them so far wow love the Tapo stuff & now just got the ECOFLOW Smart Plug, WiFi Socket only one so far as we have the tapo Smart bulbs wow we now have 12 of them & two of the Multicolour Smart Wi-Fi Bulb wow love the items
Do we need a gateway for this to work?
Is this for use in the US??
I bought the same device but it doesn’t send notifications when you set time schedules.. normally smartlife app sends notifications when the device goes off or on .. my other devices on the same app send notifications… could you help me to resolve this issue ..
Where does the consumption data get stored? On the app or on the device. I wanted to know if somehow the app gets crashed or for whatever reason. The data must have been on the device.
Thankyou
Definitely not the app as I have removed it and it remains intact. I must admit that I assumed it was being stored in the cloud as you have to login to use these. It could be on the device but I imagine storing everyone’s data would be more valuable to Tuya.
can you control it over the Internet? (outside of your wifi coverage)?
Yes, these are connected to the net so you can control them wherever you are. In fact, the worst side of these is that you can’t control them without the internet which seems stupid.
What about Energy saving at 16:03? Does it work with this plugs?
same question, did the app ever pull statistics from those plug?
Yes but its a Subscription only service on the app, ie you have to pay for it
@@nick024 Its a Subscription only service, ie you have to pay for it
Hey bud. Do you know if this works on smartthings?
it does, there's an option for you to link tuya/smart-life account with the samsung account. Its in the smart life app
FiWi range??
Those values are from QA. When they test it before releasing to the market.
Explains why recent copies of this device have no values in them at all. 😂
@@tdcattech Lol. Now you know why. Just like high-end cars. They are never 000000 mileage when you buy. They do a test lap before delivering to make sure everything is working as expected.
Can you control the plug outside of the local network? E.g. I'm at work and I need to turn something on or off at home - can I do that? Or is it local network only?
Yes. You can control them from anywhere provided the plug has an internet connection. That sounds obvious but it’s really just to stress that without internet connectivity, these are useless and the basic schedules won’t even work as they are not stored on the plugs themselves.
I think that is a valid question as I read some allow local network only and if you are out of that same network, you have to pay monthly subscription to remote control (out of the same network)
@@kfokeerah I bought one, it works via general internet with a free account
@@tdcattech BTW the govee smart plug does store the TIMER schedule internally on the plug (as long as power is continuous). However the DELAY timers on/off need the app to be connected via at least BT to work
I have them on I phone but want them on my I pad
Does it notify you when there is a power outage?
No but see on phone if you're away
Is the energy usage data downloadable? Thanks
No, I don’t think so.
@@tdcattech noted. Thanks again 👌🏼
I think that means they tested it
Does it work via bluetooth connection?
No. 2.4GHz Wi-Fi.
@@tdcattech So it works only locally? Can you access plug while on mobile data?
Yes. The plug connects to the internet and everything from there is basically cloud based. You can therefore access them from anywhere (which is fantastic) but on the flip side, they don't work if you go offline and also I have no doubt that all your usage, location data is stored and used by external parties.
Can this plug remember its initial state if there is a power outage
Yes. It remembers if it was on or off and powers up in that same state. 👍🏻 Very useful.
@@tdcattech this is what brought me to this video, thanks for the swift answer.
Can I use this to power a 1.5HP / 1.1Kilowatts Air condition
Can I use this for Air Conditioner?
Yes, no problem. Max power rating is just over 3kW so you should be fine.
@@tdcattechthank you for you reply. So, I can turn on/off my ac with this plug via app? Is that okay for my AC? I asked this since this is not smart infrared remote.
@@macintoshmac i recommend to not turn off with this plug because ur AC would might be have a problem with the PCB Module and the Compressor also.
So don't use the tuya app? Use smart life?
I brought 5 WiFi plugs and using /w WiFi washing machine, GREE WiFi UV Air Conditioner, Induction cooker.
I don't know why today's home appliances with huge standby current, stealing money from your wallet.
After brought a new electrical appliance, U should use an electrical power meter ( 13A ) to check the standby power consumption.
what's the horsepower/kilowatt of your AC?
I wanna get this to automatically on/off my AC at intervals at night when I'm asleep to save some electricity bills
Alexa and Google Home too...
Yeah, very true. I couldn’t test that as we’re not an Alexa or Google Home household but I definitely should have mentioned it! 👍🏻
@@tdcattech Yea, looking to buy these for Google home
You'll have to stick to those ecosystem brands only. They are more expensive, but my problem with them is, they don't offer devices that will give you these options(energy usage, compatibility with other brands....) you're basically stuck
A nice slap in the face to the proprietary("by my expensive product only") brands like amazon, tp link and other ecosystems. This tuya/smart-ife lets you bring your own choice of brand and says "ok, sure, I'll play"... There are some exceptions here but the platform is much more tolerant. I'm not so upset its Chinese made..
Turns out these devices are not so realiable if you use cloud based automation to trigger a scene. Example: A power on scheduler scene. It often turns on the device after nearly an hour later or doesn’t trigger at all. This should've had bigger internal memory to save not only the power state setting but also at least a few dozen automations within the device instead of needing constant internet and communication with tuya servers.
I've never had one fail in this way but I completely agree that devices like this should not need internet full-stop! I get it's needed to control devices when away from home and connectivity to their servers makes that simpler for most users but it should still function when internet goes down.
@@tdcattech Thanks for the reply man. Btw one thing often happens that if I keep the device scheduled for a 5am power up and if there's a power outage around 4:55am and returns back at 5:05am the device does not get turned on due to the power state of the device being set to off/ last state.

16A plug I used for AC. Worked good for 2 weeks. Now stopped working. Seems like a bad product and pathetic brand.
Appreciate the feedback. I have ten of these and they've all been perfect. Always mixed views and experiences.
@@tdcattech alibaba returned the amount without hesitation. No more tuya. Better to go with some other brand.
