If this company went to a Bank for a loan / investment for their business, the Bank would likely make a much more aggressive offer by expecting a percentage of their company as a method of "insurance" whilst seeking the initial investment back as repayments with interest. What these Shark's are doing is what Banks do everyday to businesses, except the Shark's are usually offering these structures at much smaller percentages than what a Bank would offer - making the Shark's offers more attractive than traditional banks whilst the Shark's are securing themselves the same financial security as a Bank would itself. Additionally, this is free exposure, which sells. The other thing to take in mind is the rarity of securing a capital investment with a Bank without a solid track record of sales - so you must take all of this into account when you hear these type's of deals being made.
