Best stop motion, story, design and direction I've yet seen in any of these shorts. Considering the nature and size of the medium, the cinematography verges on sheer genius, also.
+RobertsDigital perhaps they were speaking of the background, the landscape as it were certainly seems/appears to have a alien quality. As for stop motion.. it's the story that matters, not so much the format used to tell it
Whats wrong with attributing meaning to something the authors clearly spent a lot of time on? I mean there's nothing wrong with enjoying the work for its surface appeal, but I dont think you should be aghast that people are actively listening for a message. What if the authors wanted to be heard, and here you are undermining any attempt at communication. Its nice that you enjoy it, but let others also enjoy it. God forbid a discussion breaks out 🙄
Спасибо за великолепную короткометражку, авторам отлично удалось передать атмосферу на 10 из 10, что, к сожалению, редкость. Удачи вам в ваших последующих проектах!
that pretty much is the story in a nutshell. It was pretty good although i think they should have left the humans out of it. Other than that i thought it was really good especially since i normally hate stop motion.
I remember watching this years back and adoring it due to its unique stop motion style as well as the creature designs and post-apocalyptic environments. It's still great now as it was back then ;). Edit: that lightbulb chicken/roadrunner is super adorable :3.
Here's my take: We view progressively larger creatures throughout the film, this 'evolution' of what we see is a parallel of evolution itself: the evolution of artificial intelligence. The humans in the video assume that their creations are working to save them, when really the robot is working on its own transcendence, or the creation of a final ("Omega") way of being. Many artificial intelligence futurists are saying that the future does not need us. Computers will become a from of life far above our own, and will turn their gaze to the stars and the nature of the universe rather than on life. Here is the paradox of its existence, it is descended from life and somehow not the same.
You should watch the movie "Her" if you haven't already. The message behind the movie is similar to your interpretation expect the human race doesn't cease to exist :P
Najebanski One of my favorites. I thought the ending was brilliant in that the human race was ultimately so unaffected by the transcendence of their creation. The ending was basically a shrug: "So now what?"
The planet is uninhabitable by organic life forms. The planet shows NO plant life with chlorophyll. The mega ship at the end discards waste in barrels implying toxic waste. The humanoids wear protective hazardous material suits and hazmat masks explicitly indicating a toxic environment. It would appear that the humanoids either polluted and denuded the planet or arrived at a devastated planet, which they are in the process of devastating further with toxic waste. The automated nature of the mega vessel and nominal functioning of the humanoids indicates that the humans are mere appendages of their machine(s). It would appear that the leit motif of the short film is that humanoids are the god- like engineers of their own destruction.
Ok so, no one seems to get the story. What I got was maybe that humans had built a mechanical ecosystem and where studying it, one of the creatures had developed to a stage where it survived by absorbing other mechanical lifeforms, it develops curiosity (possibly from its most recent prey) and follows the light to where the humans are. When there it encounters two sentinel or operator drones who defend the humans and what seems to be there base, lab or refineing facility ( they might have been harvesting the mechanical life like a farm). The sentinel then absorbs the creature when it either recognises that it is out of place or it is simply it's job to collect the life forms for process. After doing this it falls victim to the life forms evolved ability to absorb and the sentinal and the facility are all soaked up like a sponge to create the creature we see. In effect the creators where destroyed after the created evolved in an unforeseen way.
OMG! This is a crazy weird mixture of so called steam-punk, sci-fi, post-apocalypse and some else kind of psychotic fantasy. Very strange! So awesome amazing!
How do they reproduce? They eat each other. That implies there is reproduction, evolution, an ecosystem, and all that fun stuff. My inner biologist is unsatisfied. A+++ short film though, right? Brilliant. The quality of the animation. The way it keeps you on the edge of your seat the whole way through. You find you're getting attached to each creature of focus even though you know it's going to get eaten. The creativity that went into all the creatures.
I think, if you are interested in the workings of mechanical lifeforms, you might find this webpage worth reading. Ever heard of SCP? www.scp-wiki.net/scp-816
agustrusher Hi, I went on the website scp... What exactly is it? Looks incredibly imaginative, but I have trouble understanding the "secure contain protect" thing. Thank you very much for this link anyway. Awesome!
merveilleuxetmagique It's difficult to explain. I didn't understand it at first either. Basically, the "secure contain protect" thing, which includes the "SCP" organization, is a fictional medium for which very elaborate and imaginative "artifact" profiles are written. Imagine Warehouse 13; SCP is like that, but much darker and way more terrifying (though, incredibly fascinating and sometimes hilarious).
I recalled the works of Salvatore Dali while seeing this film; that's what came to my mind; a moving version of Dali's paintings. It's highly creative. Thank you.
i wish there was MORE!!!! once its was over i was like "wtf this can't be it!!!!!" this is a fantastic piece of art work and it must of not been easy to create it! its amazing!
The machina angels were *man made*. Belief in god has nothing to do with it. This central creature had a a trait which was useful.. he absorbed abilities from the creatures he absorbed. The angels were designed by men to collect any useful rescources. The men used what was useful and then jettisoned the garbage. Unfortunately for the men.. upon being absorbed by the angels.. the creature took on their power.. growing and absorbing the useful rescources of the ship.. and then gazing upon the rest of the world.
They looked like dragon flies at first; then they transformed into the smoke brushes I have for photoshop and then finally into bizarre daddy-long-legs.
That was some of the most beautiful visual effects and animation I have seen in a long time, I liked that animators mixed stop motion and CG in a way that worked. My only critique would have been that the humanoid beings in gas masks looked very static compared to everything else - bit in general this was superb, whimsical and wonderfully creepy!!
this is incredible, the wole thing, the video quality, the meticulous editing, the frame rate... It is by far the most incredible animation i've ever seen, and beats mine to death.
kappa guy lol that depends on how much animation your going to use the bigger the model the more part require movement for now I use use very small models it probably takes me 5-6 hrs to make vids it all depends how much your going to put in it my films are short you can make a really cool film in short time like I said it depends on the model size parts movement and the animation you use the sound fx and visuals are always last it's fun but for now I won't make and have no plans for a tim burtons a nightmare before Christmas lol.
Interesting short. An eery landscape with trippy mechanical creatures in a far out world. They seem to be evolving beyond their origin & create their own purpose.
I am in a constant state of mind flux over this. It was both fantastic and mentally challenging. You go along with your own development of what is going on, what it means, and then it takes you to an entirely different, unknown place where you have to adapt very quickly to the scene..."Now what is happening?" and you have to develop another quick model of what is going on. Personally, I loved it. I love new, imaginative things that I have never seen before and this very well satisfied that hunger. Bravo.
Very nice. Could have benefited from some editing in the beginning as it took one third of the film until the main character was introduced, but then the pacing became nice. The blend of stop-mo and CGI was very well done. Overall an excellent piece with some great designs.
My understanding: People are getting ready to leave planet Earth, but are picking up some minerals for the away trip. The steampunk robot wanted to go with, and was a lot tougher than humans built their butterfly thing to handle. The robot took possession of the whole ship from there, reshaping it in steampunkbot's image. The fate of the people aboard the ship is unknown, and (to SPR) irrelevant. If the film was meant to be creepy, (which I really hope it was) it worked really well.
There are absolutely NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO words even remotely strong enough to describe how much I loved, Loved, LOVED, ♥️'d this video to death with a vengeance - IT WAS JUST BLOODY DAMN FREAKIN' AWESOME!!!!! This was really cool. I have dreams like this sometimes! I love stop motion, and my youngest son is a huge fan of stop motion and is planing his own videos. He would love this video! Well done, thanks for the entertainment!!
stunning. Don't take any notice of simplistic comments that talk about not understanding it or not following the story. Those people are looking for mickey mouse like story lines that keep them entertained. This is a visually stunning work of art. Well done!!
+RJ Richardson Well there isn't really any way to describe it. It's abstract. It doesn't have a real story of it's own and it doesn't really need one. It tells the viewer what it is through strange visuals and doesn't want to hold your hand. It's leaving the story up to your imagination so for all these comments saying "I don't get it", there's really nothing to get. I know that probably sounds pretentious and hipstery as fuck, but that's just my take on it.
Extraordinary skill, imagination, and patience went into this animated film. The coordination of multiple centers of action is remarkable. Willis would have been impressed! Too bad that CGI has made this art form largely irrelevant for practical commercial film-making.
Yes, it is, Lord Geezmo, in the sense that it involves the creation of sequential images to simulate continuous motion; but those images are created in distinctly different ways! It's like comparing painting with sculpture.
Did someone slip a hit of LSD into my video? Holy shit, that was awesome! Great job... one of the best and most unique indie films I have seen in a while!
This compelled me. It's meant to provoke thoughts and ideas. And by the comments, it has succeeded. There is no right or wrong here, it is all about what you perceive it to be. That's what Sci-Fi is supposed to do, feed the dreamer.
chouji08 cgi takes time and dedication too, there is no quick way to make an animation and cgi takes a lot of time and dedication to learn, I've been doing it for over 20 years and I'm still learning all the time.
***** The textures have actual texture, not simulated. The lighting is real lighting, not simulated lighting. Genuine surface refracting genuine photons. Actual real-life models are what ray-traced models aspire to portray. Computer rendered graphics are a solution to achieving visual effects that would otherwise be too complicated, too costly or too time consuming to do in real life. Whether it's actually better depends the creators, imo. Often CGI is used as a cheap alternative, with disappointing results.
It is a bit unclear whether the sentinel / Ohm ended up killing humans in the process of the evolution, or if it was expected sooner or later, and part of a plan. Great concept and followthrough though! Edit: If any of you participating in this movie want more inspiration, check out SCP Foundation. So much creativity there, and a lot of mystery stuff that fits this well!

Man that tiny thing with two legs and a light bulb at the beginning was so cute!
I like how every subsequent creature and change is reflected in what was the head of that creature. Great detail.
All of it, including the music, seems so convincingly alien. This work is a jewel of Human imagination.
+Kevin Loughin that electrolysis convert a simple machine into a mecha.
