    We tend to think that beam routines "back then" were so much better because there are so many wobbles nowadays. But by watching your videos I wonder if this has to do with the immense pressure gymnasts have today. I mean, a beam routine in the 80's could get a 10 with cowboyed legs, flexed knees in acro series, and small wobbles/adjustments; but now THEY HAVE TO BE PERFECT, the code is relentless and they know that.

    • @cocoroni1031
      @cocoroni1031 Рік тому +4

      They don't have to be perfect, they just have to minimize deductions. Beam in this COP is more demanding than any COP in the past. Beam under the COP demands continue and fluid movements. So many routines in the past could absolutely killed by pause and adjustment deductions nowadays. Many dance elements would've been downgraded. Also, wobble is better than badly executed dance element (see Sara Yamaguchi's beam at worlds).

      Flip Fly Tumble is what's keeping the gymternet sanity through this and last quad lol. If only the FIG would post scoring breakdowns of at least the most relevant routines, maybe more people wouldn't have a problem with the scoring. It's obvious artistry deductions have been applied more heavily this quad compare to the last, even Donatella acknowledged it, so the confusion by the public is very understandable.

      I would love to see a floor breakdown. I think what is causing the issues there (with floor) is a misunderstanding about what is now graded as the highest level dance. It's so much higher than before. It is embodiment, flow, nuanced and subtle and almost professional dance technicality alongside perfectly modern expressive choreography. Because so many people don't have a necessary depth of understanding, and experience, to know what is brilliantly communicated contemporary dance they are not able to distinguish between average and near perfect performances and this is causing so many issues. Lots of youngsters are looking at the final floor mark and screaming 'unfair' and 'biased' because of this reason and it might help everyone to sort it out. If you look at the criteria it's pretty obvious. Thanks again!

    • @Plaspos
      @Plaspos Рік тому +6

      This judge is a brilliant video editor and communicator, but she has not applied the same standard of judging that she did in the video she recently made evaluating Sun Xinyi.
      After watching the Sun Xinyi video it’s clear Jessica should also be getting a precision deduction on the switch 1/2 too. Between everything else she already gave Jessica it should really be a 0.5 deduction rather than 0.3.
      She also gave Sun Xinyi a bent knees deduction on her front aerial when Jessica’s aerial is no better and in fact worse (-0.1).
      We have already discussed how we disagree on the deductions on the Korbut (-0.2), the wolf turn prep (-0.1), and the releve (-0.1), but there is also the dismount. Jessica was only deducted in this video -0.3 for one large step when in fact her front moves as well. That should also be getting a -0.1 under a strict caller.
      That’s between 0.3-0.8 in additional deductions which would have been applied if the strictness of the Sun Xinyi routine was applied here.

    • @cocoroni1031
      @cocoroni1031 Рік тому +10

      @@Plaspos Sun's "split 1/2" is obviously deviated from horizontal, whereas Jessica's switch half is along the beam direction. Jessica's front aerial is better because her second leg doesn't look bent in real time when being perpendicular to the beam. I just don't see how Korbut is deduction trap like some suggested, unless you suggest Korbut should be treated like we need to deduct RO / FHS / BHS for "lack of amplitude", as Korbut belongs to the same element class with RO / FHS / BHS (and then no one would do Korbut). I think the judge has clearly stated the preparation issue of the wolf turn. Releve issue has been addressed. The problem of the dismount is the major step back which is all covered in the 0.3 deduction. Overall, Jessica's score is accurate based on this video analysis, even though I thought her beam score was a bit too high before this video.

    • @Plaspos
      @Plaspos Рік тому +3

      @@cocoroni1031 are you really trying to say that Jessica is parallel to the beam on the switch half? Look at her upper body and it will be obvious she is not facing the end of the beam, in addition to the lower body. Sun's split 1/2 is probably 25-30 degrees off center whereas Jessica's is 15-20, both should definitely get a deduction.
      How is Sun's front aerial visible in real time? Jessica's Korbut bent knees are much more visible and apparently those are not enough to count.
      Speaking of Korbut, it is in the same class of elements as BHS and RO. but unlike those it is explicitly supposed to have a "high flight" phase per the code which is where the amplitude deduction comes in. As for the bent knees, again - much worse than Sun;s front aerial, and both legs rather than just one for Sun (not that that's a greater deduction but should be extra obvious).
      The fact that elements have deductions does not mean people stop performing them (see Eaker, Kara). And it's not like no one can do Korbuts without any deductions (again see Eaker, Kara and many other gymnasts). Jessica's Korbut is just unfortunately below average.
      The Releve issue has not been addressed. if you search "FIG cop" and look at the first result for the page flipflytumble was talking about (section 12 page 4), you will see the language is what I quoted: "poor work in releve" rather than "lack of releve." it says at the top of this document it was approved by the FIG executive committee, so does that mean it's the final version? It's unclear since they don't number their versions.
      the major step back is covered, yes, but are you saying there is no minor step back? or that the movement of the front leg is not a deduction?
      my point is overall this is a generous judging compared to SXY.
      I don't expect flipflytumble to publish a result very different from anything the FIG gives out since she needs to maintain her judge status and naturally doesn't want to cause controversy.

    I have something to say, and this is not from a place of hate or anything of that sort. However, I just got my Judges license for Team Gym gymnastics this year and it is quite impossible to see every little deduction. Even the most experienced judges cant see everything. In my opinion, videos like these are a little misleading to the general gymnastics enjoyer mainly because OVERSCORED was in the thumbnail and not everyone can reads the description. I completely agree, she did not get overscored because the judges simply can't see everything. Just so you know, i really enjoyed this video and loveeeeeee your editing skills. keep up the great work!

    • @Plaspos
      @Plaspos Рік тому +1

      The problem is the standard of judging. In the other videos this channel makes such as Sun Xinyi or Nastia Liukin’s beam routines, she is giving deductions for knee bend and jump position issues that are much less visible in real time than Jessica’s errors on the switch 1/2 and Korbut here, among other skills. If that strict standard was applied to Jessica (as it was applied to Shilese and Rebeca among others) this would not be the top E-score of the competition.

    • @Plaspos
      @Plaspos Рік тому +5

      I disagree strongly, there is just no way anything Jessica is doing would pass for professional or near professional. As I said in another comment, Jade is one of the best tumblers in the world and does tumbling on the artistic floor more difficult than even Jia Fangfang, 10x world tumbling champ, was capable of. And sure Jade is a poor dancer with no e of the technicality and choreography of Gadirova. So Jade gets an A+ in tumbling and an F in artistry. Meanwhile Gadirova is a strong tumbler albeit with technique and form issues compared to Jade at her best as well as a difficulty deficit so well give her an A-. But Gadirova’s dance is frankly a joke compared to previous artistic titans (Oksana Omelianchik), a rhythmic gymnast like Kudratyseva, or any actual professional dancer not to mention the best in the world (ex. Natalia Osipova). She gets a C+ in dance.
      The Olympics is about being the best of the best, not just very very good. They should be rewarding someone with an A+ in tumbling even with an F in artistry, not an A- and a C+

    If you're listing that many things on the Switch 1/2, it should be more than .3 deduction. I agree with others who say the Korbut needs a deduction, there are several things if you're being strict - bent leg, adjustment, wasn't a fast connection. The straddle jump also doesn't have both legs above horizontal to me. Wolf turn deductions here should really be swapped, that was a big balance check, and her foot was not flexed.

    • @cocoroni1031
      @cocoroni1031 Рік тому +6

      There was no momentary pause nor excessive arm swing which breaks the rhythm from switch half to Korbut. Also, there wasn't a bent leg / adjustment on her Korbut. Her straddle jump was clearly above 180 from another angle. A 0.3 balance on wolf turn means some weird move on her arms or body to balance. In this case, she didn't.

    You also gave Sun Xinyi a bent knees deduction on her front aerial when Jessica’s aerial is no better.
    Then 0.2 on the Korbut (amplitude and bent knees, not deducting for bent arms or poor landing because those are harder to see in real time).
    A strict caller would also call a pause deduction before the wolf turn, a releve deduction for ankle angle, and a deduction for first a small hop on dismount then a larger step instead of just the larger step, considering her front foot is not remaining in place.
    All in all that’s an extra 0.4-0.8 deductions that a Chinese gymnast performing this exercise probably would have gotten considering how they are explicitly not favored by FIG leaders in past comments.

    This seems disingenuous on the ignorance of the poorly performed Korbut as well as the discussion of releve work. We both know that releve is not required, but if it IS performed it must be done well. You make it seem like she gets a check box for doing releve at all which is not true. In fact the fact she attempts releve but does it poorly (weak ankle angle compared to Chinese gymnasts) should be a deduction rather than a check mark. Whereas someone who does no releve at all would not get a deduction. The “code-savvy” approach is to never attempt releve

    • @cocoroni1031
      @cocoroni1031 Рік тому +8

      Her releve is good enough not to be deducted. The box is for whether the releve is good enough, not excellency. Since she did releve with choreography (not just small arm wave to buy time) right before the dismount, that didn't qualify for a pause deduction like some wanted lol.

    No offense to you, this is informative content but I find FIG’s artistry requirements for beam extremely outdated. Next they’re going to make female gymnasts dance on the runway before they vault. There is no reason gymnasts should be dancing on the beam in between elements. It adds nothing to the routine, it doesn’t improve the flow in my opinion, even in this case when she has obviously more intricate choreo. The vast majority of gymnasts just swing their arms and legs expressionless and it’s not their fault, it’s because there is no time and no room for some happy dancing when they’re trying their best to execute their moves.
    I find it also hypocritical and misogynistic from FIG that they’re making female gymnasts do this when male gymnasts have ZERO choreography requirements, further solidifying gender stereotypes in the sport. But hey, people are gonna reply with “iT’s a DiFfErEnt sPort” again so what do I know.

    • @viclit101
      @viclit101 Рік тому +8

      It is very much a different sport, MAG came from ancient warrior skills, WAG evolved from dance.
      Without dance, women’s floor would just be an inferior version of men’s floor. It’s not misogynistic.
      Plus men and women have different bodies, I’m glad there is a sport that recognises that. In everything else, women compete the same as men, but inferior. It’s refreshing that gymnastics does not pretend physical differences between men and women don’t exist.
      Balance beam is one of only two sports on the world were women are naturally better than men. Meanwhile, MAG is perfectly suited to showcasing men’s strength. I’m glad it remains different sports.
      I agree that I don’t like this era’s dance requirements on beam, it ironically compromises natural artistry. There is a limit to what choreography can be performed on a four inch beam, and forcing it is having the opposite effect. It mostly looks stupid. A clean, simple and graceful routine will always be more artistic than endless redundant arm flailing.
