The story is interesting. The imperial Austrian anthem was never popular in Hungary, because of what happened in 1849 (Hungarian Revolution). The "Gott erhalte" was a cursed and hated song that nobody sung in Hungary. There was only a semi-official translation, that was published by two translators under a pseudonym(!). I only wonder if the Hapsburgs had only been more enlightened in the early 1800s to 1914 what would have happened. So, what was German anthem back then? This sounds like today's German anthem.
What you listen to is the Imperial Austrian Anthem. The anthem was originally composed for Emperor Franz II., the last Holy Roman Emperor ("Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser"). Due to the Napoleonic Wars, he dissolved the Holy Roman Empire and became further Emperor Franz I. of Austria. The Imperial Anthem was composed by Joseph Haydn.
Germany had no anthem after 1806. "Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser" was the anthem of the Holy Roman Emperor, but the Empire, which had connected all German territories, ended in 1806. 1815, the German Federation was created, but had no anthem - "Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser" had became the Austrian Anthem (1826-1918 officially).
In 1871, when the German Empire was created, the anthem was "Heil dir im Siegerkranz". Since the Habsburg Monarchy ended 1918, the anthem wasn't used anymore. Austria got another anthem and Germany, now the Weimar Republic, choosed the melody of the old "Habsburg" anthem as their new hymn.
So, as conclusio: Joseph Haydn's work was used as anthem of:
*the Holy Roman Empire
*the Austrian Empire
*the Austro-Hungarian Empire
*Weimar Republic, Third Reich, Germany (BRD)
Thanks for thorough explanation. I appreciate it. I also thought Roman Empire dissolved 1453.
