  • FIRE crew rescued three people from two flats after a wheelie bin and mattress were pushed up against a front door and set alight.
Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) was called to a flat in Fifield Close, Fitton Hall, Oldham, just before 2.45am today.
On arrival crew from Hollins Fire Station found the door well alight and three people in an upstairs flat were trapped by the fire.
Group Manager Gary Jones from GMFRS attended the incident along with crew in two fire engines. He explained: "The three people in the upstairs flat had only one way out and that door was engulfed in flames. They were on the phone to our call operators at the 999 Control Room throughout the incident and were given life preserving advice on how to stay safe and calm whilst we got them out."
Crews wearing breathing apparatus and using two hose reels immediately tackled the fire at the front door and went into the flat, which was heavily smoke logged from the blaze, to lead the three people to safety.
Gary Jones added: "This could have been an awful lot worse. It appears this fire has been started deliberately, with a wheelie bin and mattress pushed up against the door. The Police and our own Fire Investigation Team are now investigating exactly what happened."
