    You can commercially fly planes into Delaware now. The Wilmington airport has frontier flights that commute to Orlando and Denver.

    this is quite informative. i've always felt when looking at delaware on a map that it seems like it doesn't even make sense as it's own state and that it should just be a part of one of the other states that surround it. it's boundary is just so odd. it's fascinating to know more about the history and that it basically was passed back and forth between its neighboring states for a time. thanks for the info - you've got a new subscriber!

    That’s not True Delaware was never part of Maryland Delaware was originally given to New York New York then gave the 12 mile circle and then later everything south of the 12 mile circle down to Fenwick Island to William Penn

  • @mcon8727
    @mcon8727 Рік тому +1

    The history in this video (and many comments) is pretty shaky - most of it comes from a Reddit comment on the topic. The Swedish, Dutch and English colonial history is incomplete. Also, Delaware was never part of Maryland. The Calverts in Maryland argued that it should have been, but it the land that is Delaware was granted to William Penn. The Calverts and Penns fought in court over it for years. It took over 80 years to resolve and involved the creation of the Mason-Dixon line. Another thing to clarify, the Declaration of Independence didn't create the states - the U.S. Constitution did. Delaware is the first state because it was the first state to ratify the U.S. Constitution on Dec 7, 1787. It has nothing to do with the 13 colonies declaring independence in 1776. Delaware's assembly separated from Pennsylvania (and Great Britain) in June 1776.

    This video would have been much better if it pointed out stories which obviously make NO SENSE.
    Delaware "The First State", Dec 7, 1787.
    The Declaration of Independence was Jul 4, 1776.
    So Delaware wants you to believe that the total number of states in the United States for those first 11 and a half years was ZERO.
    Quote from the video description:
    "This video is about why Delaware exists and how it became one of (in fact, the first) of the 50 states in the United States."
    2:27 - Then there is this, which also makes no sense. Delaware celebrates "Separation Day" on Jun 15, 1776. Their story is that this is the day they asserted independence from both Great Britain and Pennsylvania. Then weeks later in July when it comes time to vote for independence in the Continental Congress, HALF of the Delaware delegates vote AGAINST independence. That tie was only broken the next day after Caesar Rodney rode into town. This is the image on the Delaware quarter.
    Major lies are being told. And if you put your lie on license plates, then people believe it.
    It would be more fitting if you all changed your motto to:
    DELAWARE - "The Gaslighting State"

    • @geography_joe
      @geography_joe  4 роки тому

      Honestly as someone who lived there while I made this video, but left UD months later (as in 1.5 months later), I don't really appreciate Delaware, or the fact that it exists. It is the equivalent of a tax cut, given way too little land to ever hold any REAL influence of its own. Unlike Rhode Island, which has a distinctive character and culture, Delaware's only thing that makes it in any way special is the fact that A) No Sales Tax (tax haven), B) they THINK they were first (no), C) its so stupidly small that its literally impossible for it to stand out. Rhode Island deserves to be a state. I genuinely do not believe that Delaware deserves to be a state. I could literally ride my bike to and from the Maryland state line with the 1.5 hours I had between classes. From the only accredited university in the state. By the way, 80% of UD's students are from out of state. And its $50,000 a year out of state. Delaware is a leech. It will never not be a state, and I hope Joe Biden's presidency changes the predatory financial practices the state continues to embody for the simple purpose of lining its own pockets, solely to give tax cuts to the rich, and corporations.
      Maybe I should revisit the topic of Delaware for a video. Nothing against the many friends I now have from the state, but even they dont give a shit about Delaware. Its kind of sad. They get two senators. Like, my goodness.

    • @dahawk8574
      @dahawk8574 4 роки тому

      @@geography_joe, I wasn't intending to slam the state in its entirety. I wanted to call out certain things that don't hold water. Yes, they get 2 senators. And so does Wyoming. While Puerto Rico gets 0. The Founders & Framers actually put a lot of thought into the architecture of the US govt. The Electoral College gets a lot of heat these days. And if people were consistent, they would not argue for elimination of the EC _without_ also arguing for elimination of the Senate (or a radical restructuring of the Senate to have proportional to population).
      The EC & Senate were deliberately designed that way in the effort to solve the same problem. The effort to prevent Tyranny of the Majority.
      Yes, it will be interesting to see what happens with a Delaware Potus. Small is not inherently bad. There's a lot to love about Delaware. Like the Swedish roots. And being the only state with a circular border. And it's got -aware right there in the name. I think they're well aware of how small they are, and that's why they try to compensate by claiming they're The First State.
      It would be easy to say "First to Ratify". It's accurate. And if they wanted to spin it, they could call themselves The Rats.
      Hah ha.

    • @geography_joe
      @geography_joe  4 роки тому

      @@dahawk8574 I wasn’t trying to slam the state, its just that living there as an ohioan it was just shocking to me how little ‘delaware’ there was in delaware. The state is almost a big inside joke. Everybody knows everybody. I think the EC is genius and Wyoming should get two senators, as wyoming covers a massive rectangle of hinterland that would otherwise be entirely unrepresented. Even though wyoming arguably is the least cohesively governed state, its almost necessary to have a place like that with representation. Delaware just really could easily be absorbed into Maryland, i mean 65% of the state lives in the northern 1/3, and this is where the state is its smallest, you can genuinely drive across the entirety of it in under 15 minutes. I couldn’t imagine my whole world, and STATE not even town or county, be that tiny. I think I’ve just always been fascinated by microstates and Delaware to me is a lot more interesting than RI. Then again, i haven’t visited rhode island. But if the USA has to pick its Monaco, delaware is our equivalent in almost every sense of the word. People from delaware were talking about how excited they were that delaware might hit 1 million residents soon. I live in cuyahoga county and there are 1,250,000 people. And its not 6 miles wide!

      @@geography_joe, with you being from Ohio, then you are no stranger to License Plates That Lie.
      I hope in gradeschool you had teachers bold enough to tell you about how the Montgolfier Brothers were flying more than a century before the Wright Brothers! Or maybe it was you kids as the students who had to school your teachers.
      BIRTHPLACE OF AVIATION*
      * - Birthplace of heavier-than-air powered piloted controlled sustained aviation**
      ** - AFTER returning from North Carolina where the big event actually happened
      gJoe: "Delaware just really could easily be absorbed into Maryland..."
      Or seeing how the stable historical relationship was with Pennsylvania, they could have decided to just remain as part of the Keystone State. The decision to separate is as though your penis decided that your body needed to undergo a sex change. "Please remove me. I really should not be attached." And so they got what they wanted. Monaco minus the racecars. And no Grace Kelly either.
      Back to your home state...
      There's loads to be proud of there. Along with the Wright Brothers, you all probably have the highest per capita concentration of astronauts. Then there is the Football HoF. And Hoover over on the North Side. Oh wait, I was trying to build the case that Ohio _doesn't_ suck! Heh.
      Maybe the funnest fact about your state is how 'Ohio' means Good Morning in Japanese. If you're looking for new video ideas, I'd suggest an overview on Ohio, similar to this blanket you covered Delaware with. You could do a broad sweep explaining how it was at one time seen as part of "the Northwest". Major land squabbles to include war, the whole "Western Reserve" contention, the Toledo Strip, etc ...with 'Northwest' and 'Western' both preserved in the names of colleges. And explain that Miami, Florida isn't the only Miami. You could mention the "Beaver Wars" just for giggles - kind of a Robin Sparkles tribute. As for the aviation & space stuff I know it goes outside of geography, but that would be fun to touch on too. Then people will also want to know the story of how you got such a bizarre shaped flag. Delaware might be the Monaco of the USA, but you're our Nepal!
      And if you wanted to include sports history in the story, then there is a SECOND PAIR of Ohio Wright Brothers to cover: the much less famous Harry & George Wright, where a strong argument can be made to evict the Baseball Hall of Fame from Cooperstown, and have it moved to its 'wrightful' home of Cincinnati. Then you would own both baseball & football.
