I actually like "bad" tattoos. I think it gives a person character, and the tattoos mark a point in someone's life when they got that tattoo. Not all "bad" tattoos are bad.

the only thing I regret is that when I was younger (in my 20's) I didn't get bigger tattoo's. I was kind of chicken of how society (mostly my job) would view me w/them. That is out the window now (in my 40's) and I get what I want as big as I want where I want and I love them. It was very nice "meeting" you and hearing from you Michael. I think it's hard to really define what a "bad tattoo" is. Art is so subjective from person to person. You could argue that some tattoos are fundamentally bad, as in like poor linework, poor colour saturation, misspelling words, wrong font choices, etc but just because you think a tattoo is bad doesn't mean the next person does.
Honestly I have really shitty stick and pokes and I LOVE them. They're some of my favorite tattoos. In a way I feel like they mean a bit more to me just because some of them I did MYSELF or they were done by a friend I love.
I love how you touched on the fact that how the punk scene is kind of what got you guys into tattoos. Like the want to look different from everyone else, making a statement, inducing shock value is a huge part of being punk and I think tattoos are sort of a "badge of honor" for us.

when I got my tattoos I was 18 and in highschool. I have three birds on each of my collar bones and a sun in my left with a moon on my right. I got a crap ton of comments like "is that from divergent" and "you're gonna regret it". It's only been two years but I still love them so much. I planned them for five years and I'm so happy that I was able to get them done by a trusted source.
The same day I had a conversation with my parents about the first tattoo I want (which didn't end too well), their friend came over that night and was telling them how she got tattoos when she was a lot younger and although she isn't particularly fond of them now and they're not something she'd get at her age, she wanted them at the time because that's who she was, and that's why she does still love them in a way and has kept them on her body. I think that's really important.

It's not really bad, but a tattoo that gets alot of attention and after 19 years I am just done with it. So I will be very happy to have it gone, eventhough it will be weird as I've had it since I was 16.

I have what a lot of people might think is a "bad tattoo"... I just walked into a shop with some script I printed off word and some leaves I found online (back when I didn't know any better). I got lucky because it was such a good experience with the artist, even if he was really young and it isn't a technical masterpiece of clean lines. I think there's something to be said about feeling a connection with an artist. I think tattooing is an intimate experience--someone is touching your body, marking it forever. My boyfriend got tattooed by someone I considered a dream artist; from his insta portfolio he's clearly very very skilled. I went with him to the appointment and now I'm seriously questioning if I want to get tattooed by this artist because it was such a cold, clinical transaction. We sat in silence for 5 hours while he worked, he didn't check in with my bf even once. I understand an artist liking to be quiet but I'm not kidding when I say SILENCE. The artist made zero effort to make us feel comfortable, but my boyfriend got a "good tattoo" out of it...

I feel like people starting to get to the age of being tattooed now are more unlikely to have 'bad' tattoos because you can research so much easier now. I have a lot of tattoos but most were done in walk in parlours and not done well! I didn't know there was a middle ground between the people celebrities went to and the walk in places. Now I know this and I am getting beautiful works of art on me...some of my baaaaad tattoos are going to be covered for sure!
Extremely interesting. I have my upper arm tattooed when I was 21, I'm now 25 which is not that long, but for months now I've been "regretting" my tattoo. It's very weird, I love the meaning, the message, what it represents, but I guess my visual taste has changed and now I wish oh imagine my tattoo but in this style. It's definitely a lot of instagram influence because seeing all these amazing artists makes you jealous, at least me. I have a very neo traditional style and it's a very good tattoo but I just keep thinking damn I wanna have it in this geometrical black work style etc and all other tattoos I want are in this style but then I think crap! Then my tattoos are not going to match in style and that annoys me deeply so I have not gotten anything new because of this feeling. It sucks, even I if I love my tattoo
Ana Victoria Morales you can still get different styles! Talk to your artist about placement or making them look cohesive - I have several styles and it doesn't look messy
My very first tattoo was on my 18th birthday at a walk in shop and it's not technically a bad tattoo just the experience in itself was bad so I have a bad correlation to it, it looks nice even though it is raised from him being very heavy handed and I'm grateful for that being the only issue with the tattoo itself. I'm lucky enough to have it on my shoulder so I can't really see it and I'm having my new artist who is starting my sleeve kinda tie it in so I can learn to love it as much as the others I have.
