    Steam fan at heart, but I love to see vintage, pre-1970 diesels. Cab units especially. They are up there with steam, and do not get as much publicity. Nice to see an event that can rival or beat any steam gathering.

    I never imagined that an event like this was possible. So good to see this many classic streamlined "race horses" in one gathering! I hope that this won't be the last time this occurs.

      Honestly, there may be conflicts with the MU systems. In the early days, MU wasn't as simple as it is now with 24 pin connectors. 2 of the same engines from different roads may not have been compatible with one another. To have one of those old girls pull all the rest of them would be hard on the old traction motors and the idea of manning 26 units to run them simultaneously sounds like a nightmare.
      That would have been cool though.

    These are very attractive diesels. Petty 611 couldn't join in the action, as perhaps the ultimate streamliner! That GE sound is very distinctive. Quite a few people despise GM here because they took over our rich variety of classes but the older units are nothing like the modern ones. At 11:45, that's what we would call some serious clag! I think Pa 5711 is the best-looking. 949 sure came a long way, didn't she?

    Does NH #2019 have a steam horn??

    • @vonmazur1
      @vonmazur1 8 років тому +3

      +Blaine Bugaski No it has a Hancock Air Chime, as did a lot of NHRR Units, they adopted it because it sounded like a steam whistle.....The NHRR was tradition conscious and they did not want to sound any different from the steam engines that the diesels replaced.

    • @voidjavelin23

      it uses air whistle instead of a typical horn, so on New Haven Railroad they use whistle on their diesel locomotive as a way to have a warning sound in a soft way

    well, what do you know, a yard full of trailer queens. i bet there's rust on the go lever between notches 3 and 8 on all of them. down here in victoria and nsw, the aussie equivalents are still getting hammered pulling freight. one of the operators rebuilds them and not for museums. they are expected to earn their keep. you should check out graeme white, greensleeves94 or bwdvd channels. and there are others. try "old emd's, epic struggle and stall: australian trains"

      Those are trainphone antenna. It was what the PRR used to communicate between locomotive crew and caboose crews. Diesels wore them on the roof, steam locomotives had them mounted on the tenders, and on both ends of a caboose.

    The railroad use Mars lights for years and they work just fine I don't see any sense in using ditch lights hope all the railroad get the picture and quit blowing up these beautiful classic F units by putting ditch lights on them look better without them and always will

    • @ethanpeters9827
      @ethanpeters9827 6 років тому

      These Afghans were never made for ditch lights so when you see it f unit coming down the track with Ditch lights on it it looks kind of stupid and funny because there's no spot to push the ditch lights but on the front so that's why it don't look right and that's why a bunch of people are complaining I see everybody's point I understand the same thing too I have the same mind setting they need to remove the ditch lights and use a Mars line regardless of railroad safety rules these engines should never be modified from their original classic look dance in the style genus I hate to see railroads ruining these old engines by thinking they have to put ditch lights on the front of the engines when they don't fit they weren't made for them they were made for Mars lights the lights on the front they had to just fine for years and ditch lights need to not be put on them like I said before they are not made for half units and they never should be put on F units there made for modern-day units F units have Mars lights and a single headlight in the front

    • @ethanpeters9827
      @ethanpeters9827 6 років тому

      I guess there's nothing we people can do or say about these F units getting get lights put on them from the railroad companies all we can do is talk and wish but it won't ever happen because of railroad safety Society thinks that every engine that runs on the rails still in service has to have ditch lights no matter if they're an F unit or not I think it is so stupid that they ruin her good F unit and put ditch lights on it the front of the engines work made for ditch lights they look funny on the front because there's no spot for them and a single head lamp light I think the railroads to get the picture and keep putting ditch lights on modern-day engines not the older unit they weren't made for this stuff they don't look right and the ones they already put the lights on they need to take them back off and restore the engine back to its original look that they had back then that's the way they used to look guessing that streamline look it's like this make them look stupid and ignorant and take away from that streamline looked at everybody likes of an F unit

    • @ethanpeters9827
      @ethanpeters9827 6 років тому

      Not anything bad but every F unit I've seen in this picture that had ditch lights on them I just skipped right past cuz it made me sad to see ditch lights on the F unit it ruin that original looked at that unit used to have I don't even watch videos anymore nowadays because of this stupidity I know it's safe but not on F unit Mars light does better it shines further and it does a better

    • @voidjavelin23
      @voidjavelin23 2 місяці тому

      well because oscillating lights like Gyra and Mars lights are very hard to maintain due to the many moving parts

      ALCo/MLW locomotives are well known for coughing up clouds of exaust. The 244 prime moover was supposedly one of the finest “preformers” in this regard. That engine was installed in, among others, the classic RS-3.
