It's called Flandeizing. A term coined by how Ned Flanders of the Simpsons went from a good neighborhood to strictly just a religious man.
So when you say SpongeBob is now characters doing what's expected, it's because of striping them down to bare bone personality quirks. Krabs is just greedy. SpongeBob is oblivious. Patrick is just dumb. Sandy is a scientist/Texan. And Squidward is just a grump.
Season four defiantly still has gems in it and is worth the watch. But you can see where the issues later were starting
Took the words right out of my mouth. There are some gems to be had in season 4 onwards but yeah the characters got flanderized
Also seems to me like they started overdoing jokes as well. Like the "Squicky closeup" where they hard-focus something in a icky looking closeup. They did that a few times throughout the first seasons, but 3-4 in this episode alone. And I noticed it the last few times as well.
Yeah, this is also the beginning of the overuse of body horror and exaggerated disgusting imagery.

@@ashleyjohnson9651yes, but that's only like a five-ten second scene of your standard eleven minute episode. Unfortunately, with the way people go about the episode, I wouldn't be surprised if some people who never actually saw it just thinks it's that scene on a loop or something.
It's a shame really, since it's actually a pretty good episode and Squidward wins in the end. You know, it's a bit like if Wet Painters went about as it does, but there's a scene involving SpongeBob's nail.
@@thepandorica1660 oh i dont remember the episode at all. i probably would if i started watching it again, but im sure its not a bad episode. its just insane to me that they made something so horrific yet so perfectly fits into peoples everyday fears that most people vividly remember it. i dont remember most of the grossup closeups in the show but i FEEL that one every time i think of it, and i think of it quite often because thats the exact sort of situation that does pop up in most peoples daily lives
its actually impressive to me. i feel like it definitely made people more aware of their feet or wearing proper footwear whenever moving anything that could potentially ram into your toenails 😂

That Squidbob Tentaclepants episode was a reference to the movie “The Fly”. A scientist creates a teleportation machine and tests it on himself, not knowing a fly has flown into the machine with him; resulting in him becoming half man and half fly.
I never heard of that movie or watched it.

The origins of the Krabby Patty recipe are very inconsistent, but this is likely deliberate so no one ever figures out what it's made of.
I think part of the reason people dislike season 4 is that the jokes became alot more mean spirited.

I think you mean seasons six and seven, where it really went full force
S4 was extremely well received back when it was released. The problem is that S4 was never considered OG/cult classic like the first 3 seasons. Spongebob really DID start to get worse starting from S5 and for some reason a lot of people only distinguish between OG spongebob and the rest.
Personally I dont think S4 is worse than S1-3 at all.
