Scotty you should do motorcycle repair videos
Can we bring this back around for discussion?
@@bulldogmadblitz Even just basic maintenance would be of great help.
I'm in the UK, I've got four cars, a Lotus, Renault, MG and Hyundai. And two motorsickles, a 1976 Benelli and a 1989 Gilera. I love your videos!!!!
I do wish you make more videos about motorcycles.....You are so knowledgeable ;)
Agreed.
👍
I'd like to see more small truck videos
metalinvader989 ua-cam.com/video/T4-L2_nRqEQ/v-deo.html
I also agree
Before I gained enough skill and comfort driving in winters here in NJ (not to mention before I bought a heated riding suit!!!), I used to winterize my bike, and took quite a few other steps.
1) A complete engine oil flush and change (using a Scavenger flush system), EVEN if the oil was changed recently.
2) A complete detail cleaning, drying and polishing, including all painted and chromed parts.
3) Remove saddle bags, and do an intensive cleaning and moisturizing with Leather Honey Cleaner and Leather Honey, then re-attach.
4) Clean all leather tassles and grip covers with Leather Honey Cleaner and mink oil
3) Pull the spark plugs and spray fogging oil into each cylinder; check and adjust or replace spark plugs if needed. Return each plug and reattach wiring
4) Place 0000 steel wool into each exhaust pipe opening, then cover with a plastic bag, secured with a rubber band or ziptie to keep rodents from nesting over winter
5) Fill tank with fresh gas treated with Sta-Bil and Star Fuel additive to the brim
6) With the bike in 1st, and with help from a buddy, push the bike into the garage, onto several layers of cardboard to keep the tires off of concrete to avoid thermal issues and help avoid the tires from developing a flat spot. Leaving it in first will also move the cylinder heads and distribute the fogging oil
7) Plug the battery into a battery tender
8) Because I used to be so paranoid: lock the ignition and add a wheel lock.
9) Cover the bike
10) Every several weeks, remove the wheel lock and move the bike forward or backwards a few inches to avoid the tires from settling.
Now that I've got heated riding gear and am comfortable riding in winter conditions, I'll ride all year round, provided there's no accumulations of snow on the ground or large patches of ice. Road home once on the GSP with both feet on the ground like outriggers, during a surprise heavy snow storm. Took an hour and a half to go what normally would have taken a half hour. The only winterizing I do now is check tire pressure as the temperatures drop, add the Harley Winter Idling Boost (though I'm not sure if it makes much of a difference) and take it easy on the bends when it's below freezing, just in case there's black ice.
I'm in Northern Ireland, it's winter 365 days a year here
On the bright side, at least you can still use an ATV or a Snow Mobile 356 days a year.
Simon Kennedy do u allso have 356 days of silent war with UK ?
What are the other 9 days? 😉
Fixed
Beautiful country, but too cloudy, rainy, and cold for me. :-)
The experts also say to change your oil and filter before putting it in storage. If you change it before then all the combustion acids don't sit there and ruin things.
Preparing For Winter Storage:
Dont stop driving it.
RalOrtTal riding*
RalOrtTal Visit Finland. That's going to change things.
AMEN!
So there's snow. Big deal.
I'm in Thailand and have 148,000 kilometers or about 90,000 miles on a Honda CBR 150 single cylinder. Too bad these small bikes are not available in America, the new 4 valve fuel injected ones easily do 80 mph without approaching red line, are light and fun to ride and get great mileage. Small bikes here are serious transportation and many are ridden the equivalent of 20,000 miles a year. They're amazing technology and the weather here lets you ride them all year long. It doesn't have to weigh 600 pounds to be a "real" motorcycle.
If I wanted to ride moped, I'd buy a moped.
Small bikes are learner bikes. There's nothing fun about them. My Heritage Softail will handle a bend as good if not better than your moped, and easily hits over 100 without ever coming close to the red line. I've had it upwards of 120 and had ample RPM's to keep going, before I spotted the cop at the top of the bridge.
150cc is a moped? You sure as hell know a lot about bikes...lol
Jonathan Smith lmao! Scott isn't wrong tho because here in U.S, if you aren't riding over 1200cc you aren't a man.
P.s I have a 900CC Kawasaki Vulcan and it's fun and comfortable to ride but extremely heavy lol
Small bikes are great fun👌
Just got back from a 40 degree (F) ride and forgot my sweatshirt. I almost died.
BIOHAZARDCURE Im not a biker but I know how that feels.
You've no idea....
Even 60 degree (F) rides feel like the start of winter
"Just Stick it in and spray" 😊
Cue Kilmer "uhn!"
Make sure you get it all the way in to last through the winter.
marc heehee
I live in California and it was 105 degrees yesterday. It doesnt get much better during "winter" still hot
My man
PLEASE DO MORE MOTORCYCLE VIDEOS PLEASE PLASE .
As always... thanks for the great videos.. being from NYC this will help and save me some money
Like Scotty, I leave it in. I’ve pulled it out in the past but now I leave it in. I fully warm it up every couple of months to keep it charged. Battery seems to last longer that way.
1:14 Wait... What? I know for the fact running your engine in winter is a very bad idea. Snow means all the fluids are cold. The cold gasoline is less keen to evaporate so, unless you have a carburator, your motorcycle was designed to run rich to compensate (until the engine warms up). But that extra gas also dissolves the cylinder oil. Instead of "lubricating" the cold oil is being stripped from cylinders and pistons. Idling your motorcycle in snow-cold weather may lead to running metal on metal and that's a nono. If you can't ride it for extended period of time better don't start it at all.
Yeah, all idling a motorcycle will do is drain the battery which would be a problem if you don't use a trickle charger. Leaving the battery plugged in all the time will end up damaging the battery. Starting up the bike without letting it warm up by riding it will only move oil that potentially has moisture in it through the engine. Ryan f9 has a good video about winterizing a motorcycle and he lives in Canada so I’d listen to the guy who’s winter lasts 8 months.
@@hi90163 Yeah, Ryan rides his bike all year round so the engine gets properly exercised. Idling alone does more harm than good.
I want a motorcycle
You'd fuckin better get a motorcycle!
I'll sell ya my Moto Guzzi ;)
Bike is looking good
Scotty should be in television. He is more knowledgeable than most mechanics I see in tv and more enjoyable to watch plus he does it all without a huge production budget.
I really would like to see him make long videos doing complex jobs and showing what to do step by step.
Hey Scotty, I just started following you about a week or two ago and so far you've been a big help. Thanks for your videos and I too live in Houston, Texas...maybe you can help me some day with my car and if I ever have problems?
I know I choose a solid bike if Scotty Kilmer has one too!
more videos on motorcycle pls. just like how to fix a sticking disk brake, etc... thanks and more power to you Sir.
Great video Scotty! I usually place the battery on trickle charge, then remove the spark plugs and squirt a small amount of Marvel Mystery oil into each cylinder, then flush out the fuel system.
About the gasoline: Maybe it is wise, after filling up, to close the air intake of the gasoline tank. That way the lightest particles of the fuel (the most easy ones to ignite) do not evaporate. Makes for a more easy way of starting the engine after a while because the most easy to ignite particles are still there to ignite.
Another good vid, Scotty. Go 'Stros
You can remove spark plug and spray fogging oil right into cylinder. keeps inside of cylinder from rusting.
0:48 that is an ups battery!
nice bike, good advice
More motorcycle vids please
you should never start your motorcycle in the winter ever and not ride it. If you start every now and then , the engine wil not reach his operating temperature and this can cause condensation in your engine and then parts could get rust... Dont worry your engine will be way better without starting it untill sping.
6 month warranty on most motorcycle batteries because they’re seasonal batteries just like boat/rv batteries
When they’re maintained they’ll last longer than your car battery
This is more of an academic point because I don't believe the negative consequences need to be overstated either way. However, I tend to disagree about starting the engine routinely - the heating and cooling without a full and thorough warmup can cause condensation issues in damp climates. Whenever I've laid up bikes in the past, they are switched off and left off until they are put back into service.
100% correct!!!
so what kind of condensation issues? in the engine?
Absolutely agree. I don't know if this is different in motorcycles from cars, but many of the car forums seem to agree that periodic starting doesn't warm the engine up enough to heat it thoroughly and burn off any condensation.
Ian O'Riordan maybe it all depends on where exactly you live.
Would it be better to fog the engine before starting, instead?
Got to disagree about a "trickle charger". A battery maintainer, like a "Battery Tender" which is what Scotty actually shows in the video, will not overcharge the battery and oxidize the plates and kill it. I have 3 of them, and my original motorcycle battery lasted TEN years, and my lawnmower battery is 9 years old and going strong, and my GTO battery is now 4 years old - I bought another Battery Tender after the old battery died..
Nice video!! One doubt.. Do we need to lubricate car wheel bearing often ?? How often should we do.. And how to do it?... Does the car service center lubricate the wheel bearing when we leave it for service.... Also can the radiator fan be lubricated by ourselves?? Pls advice.... Thanks....
Cant relate cuz been living on the equator. 365 days of either rain or sun.
That burnout at the end lol!
Hopefully this question catches wind to scotty. I live in BC canada. Right now i have an air cooled 1700cc vtwin bike sitting in an un-heated garage. Right now it has 20-50 oil in it. Is it safe to start it periodically when the temps are in the negatives? EDIT: If it matters, its a dry sump lubrication system.
Carburetors can gum-up over the winter. I always do an oil change and put some fuel stabilizer in my tank before the bike sits over the winter. In addition to maintaining the battery, I also start it about once a month and let it fully warm-up.
What about years of storage?
Scotty I have a 99 Lexus LS 400, and when I play my cd’s in the car they always skip songs 10 seconds in. What should I do?
Hope rthat bike has pontoons on it.
I would recommend a Maintainer for the Battery. Instead of the Manual Trickle Charger you referred to. Keep the battery from "Cooking". And where I live, We have E10 Gas. Which doesn't like to sit long. Stabilizer will save Grief. Some people use a Fogging Spray to keep the cylinder from rusting. I never did it.
My battery in my 2004 Triumph Speedmaster is still going strong. I even let it die a couple of times when I left the key on. I only use the trickle charger only once in awhile and never continuously throughout the winter.
Winter is coming.
scotty my 02 f150 4.2 takes a little while to start after it has been sitting over night. What I mean is, when I wake up for work when I first start it it will take maybe 3 seconds of cranking to turn on. After that it will be fine and start up fast and smooth until the next day. There is a rough idle and sometimes it wants to shut off on me, but never has. When I'm driving it seems fine. any ideas
Next time try this: cycle the keyswitch to ON and Off a couple of times, leaving it in the ON position about 2-3 seconds each time you switch it to ON, then see if it starts faster. If it does, may have a weak fuel pump or it has a bad check valve in the fuel pump assembly in the tank, allowing the fuel pressure to bleed off, and possibly allowing the fuel to drain back into the tank out of the lines. Just be sure the fuel filter is ok yet, assuming it has an external one that is replaceable.
Around here in England, motorcyclists, commonly referred to as "bikers", ride their motorbikes in the winter. Probably because of all the traffic, but that's what happens when a tiny little island has its immigration policies out of control.
Thanks for the tips, Scotty. But STOP YELLING AT ME!!
Hey Scotty I have a headlight problem every time I pressed on the breaks my headlights Flickr I took it to AutoZone and they said everything under the hood is fine and said it could be a headlight switch my cars
2013 Mazda three what do u think?
Could you make a video about why not to buy a harley davidson. I don't think their very good a lot of noise no horsepower and they break easily for that price kawasaki and ducati outperform harley davidson. Made in america doesn't equal quality craftsmanship and proper stiching, designing. Like a bugatti veron from france is quality.
starting the MC up every few weeks should NOT be done :-s .. why the hell would you put that xtra strain on it .. it will NOT rust inside due to sitting still for that short ammount of time ..
I don't have a motorcycle, but now I know what to do if I ever get one haha. Thanks Scotty, another great video!
What about changing the oil before winter storage?
Sheldon Bourgeois not a bad idea
Get a lithium ion or those super capacitor type for a battery no maintenace quick charging amperage/torque that will throw a Clydesdale over your shoulder
Battery tender is my choice. I was able to get 10 years out of my original battery on my FLHT bagger.
I was reading some peoples post and they said fill tank up start it up shut petcock off let it run til it stalls out and then ur good csuse theres no gas in the carbs?
Is this a good idea?
Remove battery and put inside ...do not start during winter storage ..wrong advice Scotty ..stick to cars bro
had no idea you from houston to . im a big fan and Love the triumph
How do you keep condensation from getting on chrome motor parts when it is stored inside a motorcycle trailer?
Tip park your tires on flat slab of wood instead of leaving them on concrete
What does parking your tires on wood do?
@@MatthewHouangvilay keeps the tires in better shape from cold concrete and dry rotting
@@doitalldavey8788 would cardboard work?
Scotty it's not a trickle charger. It's a battery maintainer like a Deltron. Just saying
For #5 - common sense
You didn’t put any link, where do i buy these bad boys?
I have an unrelated question to this video, but need some help. My cars 5 speed manual transmission sounds like the gears are grinding. I can go from 2nd to 3rd and the stick in my hand vibrates really hard, and I notice a slight clank/grinding noise in my transmission. This can happen randomly in almost any of the gears. My car is from 2002 and the transmission and gear stick haven't been rebuilt or replaced. My parents have driven the car before, and they say they don't notice anything, so I'm not sure. What do you think?
I'd try a new clutch first, could just be those parts are worn out
Thanks scotty. You should make more videos about motorcycles
+salvador rivas thanks, unfortunately they are usually my worst performing videos, since the bike community is much smaller.
question...should you drain the carbs for the cold winter,,Ontario canada
Shouldn't you also drain the carbs if you're going to let the bike sit for an extended period?
Also, if your bike has carb's , turn the gas off and let the bike cut off to drain the carbs.
After the winter my bike won’t fire and I used starting fluid n it fired alittle bit n it shut down.
I'm moving to Texas so I can ride all year sweet
Noo don't do that. Just sell your house, move to Florida and ride all year long :)
do they even sell winter stabiler stuff in texas considering it never gets cold?
You can also put your bike on a Bike stand so the wheels do not hit the ground !
Hey Scotty, where can I get that exact trickle charger you're using? What brand is it?
Appears to be a Battery Tender® brand charger.
I'm in Coats Rica, so what I do is....... ride baby ride.
Chuck Norris watches Scotty Kilmer videos
Scotty - hello from buffalo ny - bought my first bike
Scotty, have you noticed your bike is smoking?
Or get a stand for your bike so you never have to worry about the tires
This guy know how to talk at a normal VOLUME?
I live in Houston as well. Winter? Lol what’s that
Thanks scott all new to riding.. ontario can be pretty nasty in the winter
Me too. It’s nasty out the last couple weeks
Congratulations on your 200,000,000 views.
I live in Pennsylvania. 45 years of riding and I have never winterized a motorcycle. Get or build yourself a good set of rollers for the rear wheel. Take the bike outside and run it through the gears for 15 minutes or so. Take back inside to cool down. Have yourself a tent made of plastic that is temperature controlled with a small heat source and your bike will be ready always. It has never failed me. You must also never use fuel with ethanol during winter time. When you fill up before the snow flys put a cap or two of Marvel Mystery Oil in the gas tank. Just my two cents.
How about storing a car for a month or two please?
This is very important. I have bought may old used bikes, that were stored for the winter for 15 years. Then they need a $400 carb an corrosion in hidden places. If it never gets run and its stored outside, could corrosion develop inside the engine, leading to a very short engine life after its going again ?
In the past, I have always run my bike every 3 to 4 weeks during the winter. I would get it up to normal running temps. But a motorcycle mechanic told me this is a good way to foul your plugs. So do I run the motor or not?? I think running it until it gets good and hot is not going to do any harm. Your thoughts ?
Hey Scotty have a question. I have a 99 Dodge Ram that is in limp mode and won’t get out of it. Have no idea what the problem could be. Maybe a shift solenoid ?
Scotty... your Triumph or your son's ?
I always use fuel stabil, and make sure the tank is full. I have always ridden a shaft driven bike, so did not need to worry about the chain. I have always took the battery out, and put it on the trickle charger. Also they now make dry cell batteries for motorcycles. They come with a 3yr warranty, and cost about the same as a regular battery. I found mine on partzilla.com
Niagara Falls huh? That where I am from and still living. Getting ready to start prepping my baby for winter soon
If i could make suggestion, Im wondering if you can make some videos on motorcycles since you ride one yourself like buying, selling or maintaining on daily basis
What model is that Triumph bike?
I sometimes ride my motorcycle in the snow:/
Hi scotty do you have a video about storing cars for a long time ? if not could you make one please.
Thanks Scotty.
How to winterize bicycle?
prettty much the same, excepting engine parts
Everything you said makes sense but I'm curious. As for the petrol, why add stabilizers or fill the tank right up ? Why not just fully drain the tank for storage ?
Because if you do that the inside of the tank will rust faster than a Mazda Miata on the beach.
Really ? I didn't know an empty petrol tank would be so susceptible to rust. Is this because of ethanol in the fuel ? Here in Oz, so far we aren't forced to buy fuel with ethanol. It's available but it's still voluntary.
Ellesmere Wildwood also low amount of fuel or if it’s empty can cause condensation in the gas lines happened on my fourwheeler from sitting too long in the winter with low gas.
Finally, 1 bike video
I ride mine all winter snow or be damned
2:03 - That's what he said.
Hey scotty i have a vouple questions my car has been idling weird ,
