  • Sir Keir Starmer has said decades of commitment to nuclear defence will be guaranteed if Labour wins the next election.
The Labour leader visited Barrow-in-Furness, the home of Britain's Dreadnought nuclear submarines, and vowed to continue his commitment to the country's defence and backed the strengthening of the UK's nuclear deterrent.
He also described his party as a pioneer of defence, saying: "Labour has a long tradition and history when it comes to defence."

Wouldn't trust most politicians as far as I can throw them. What is true is that successive governments of all flavours for decades have been disastrous for the Armed Forces and i would argue the country as well.

@@lonpfrb what is this "military covenant" you speak of? I've never experienced such a thing. After leaving the armed forces if you're messed up NOTHING comes from the government it all comes from charities. Stop being conned that the government does anything meaningful for veterans. The British legion and ssafa are charities paid for by some members of the public usually with a military connection who choose to put their hands in their pockets.

So… what’s a commissioner? The Tories have a veterans MP, the Secretary of State should look after the rest.
I’m sure the Tories currently spend 2% of GDP and Sunak announced last week this was going up to 2.5% (not a, we’d like too but it’s their fault), and the Tories have just given £35m to veterans and service leavers. Office for veterans affairs etc I know a lot of people moan about them and think they do nothing but given them a chance, all fairly new systems. And what did Labour give us? Defence cuts and Iraq.
Sure there’s issue, Pinnacle, Capita and Sodexo need to go but I don’t see either party committing to that atm.

The problem facing the U.K is we have a defence that is neither fish nor fowl. Hollowed out to be wafer thin and unable to sustain a protracted conflict by not having a home industry base . BAE systems is a multi national conglomerate, a privateer and monopolist not something the country can count upon to secure sovereign safety .Having separate army ,navy and airforce is a luxury that needs to be resolved. Health, education ,water ,energy, social housing and infrastructure are all crippled, by choices pushed through by an elected party that has done this out of extreme capitalist dogma that is based on a stock market economy and property inflation, not sustained balance , but extreme plutocracy that favours only the richest. So little wonder people are unwilling to fight to maintain those conditions ? The first reviews should be financial and a shake down the tickle down charlatans for neglect of promises, with industrial decline, going back 50 years !

I wouldn't trust Labour to run a bath. They're all a bunch of, how shall I say, shallow with the truth 😮😮. Best military in the world.
I wish politicians would show them the respect they deserve, and fund them properly. Can't find the money to fund them, but plenty of money for overseas aid, and the odd disaster here and there. Bottomless pit for that.

The threats that we face are escalated by NATO. Better to spend the money at home fighting inequality and improving conditions for existing troops. The social contract with the government has been broken, and not sure why anyone would want to fight in these proxy wars.

What utter bullsh1t. A total change of military culture is needed urgently. That’s not going to happen, any time soon. I’m a time served soldier of 22 years, a former Recruiter in fact, and I would be telling all, to stay well away from joining the Armed Forces.
