New York is just finished. Migrant crisis, rats, Cost of living, quality of life…etc. if I made over 100k a year, I would not be living in New York. I will be in Miami.
As long as they have those old metal trash cans, people just putting their trash on the sidewalk, etc. She'll NEVER get rid of the "RAT PROBLEM"! Maybe if the people that are still left in New York would care more about their neighborhoods and keep them clean...then there WOULDN'T be a "RAT PROBLEM"!!!
You sound kind of naive. Cities have more people living in a smaller space. More people create more trash. More trash=rats. There are certainly many things that can be done, but ignoring the problem leads to more rats. Have to stay on top of the problem but there will always be rats in cities.

OMG. We in Australia have smaller bins to those lifted by the rubbish truck. But we have been using this system for decades. Why has it taken so long for the NY people to do the same?
They used to take it out to sea and dump it back in the day no joke
I believe that if the regular television stations had films/adds on a daily basis showing the increasing mass of the floating plastic islands in our oceans. Then maybe they would stop tossing the trash in the bay/sea.

Willful neglect of services created a high paid job for a former education worker. We have the same here, problems with rats and rubbish. The councils took the taxes that cover sanitation and wasted it on vanity projects and personal profits instead.
I was a Sanitation worker in Michigan for 11 years and I was amazed at how fast a landfill becomes a mountain.
Oddly enough, I just made an observation from a front range rooftop the other day that I could see Longs Peak, Pikes Peak, and the mountain of a dump standing tall in the distance. Fit right in somehow.
NYC needs to read the book, "Rats".

I live in Australia. Our trash gets collected once a week.
My weekly trash bin consists of... 1 baby nappy bag of rubbish, (sometimes grass clippings from the lawn and garden refuse.)
We have a recycle bin as well where 99% of my plastics, paper, glass and metals go. That's about half full on rubbish day.
My food scraps which is minimal, because I try not to waste anything, is usually about the size of my baby trash bag. This I put in a lidded compost bin, which breaks down and is use on gardens.
My total waste footprint is very minimal. I try not to use one use plastics. I reuse chemist paper bags for my fruit and veg when shopping. I also have mesh bags for that too.
Edited: (The people of NY waste so much food and plastics, its so sad looking at that amount.) If people were more conscious about their trash footprint, then maybe there wouldn't be as big of a RAT problem in NY.

In Aussie here , we had automated garbage collection trucks in our neighbourhoods both residential and large ones . All residents have their own large lidded plastic bins that are designed to be picked up by the auto arms on the side of the trucks . And we have had this in place for about twenty maybe thirty years now ? New York is sooooo far behind the world in this department as I have been enlightened by your featured story . Omg . Makes me appreciate where I live even more now

15:53 damn the trash game is crazy . There is a lot of money in disposing trash. I work on ships , and what we pay for them to take are trash, and waste is insane it's at least 100k , and that's just for one big ass dumpster by the ship they pick up .

Where is the recycling ant food composting? I live in the northwest and we seperate our garbage, recycling, and food waste. If somebody were to come up with this type of program and provide the sites and trucks they would “clean up”

I live in Milwaukee WI. We have those trash containers for our garbage. Does these containers work, Hell no! The rats eat holes either in the lids or at the bottom of the container. Raccoons and squirrels help naw through the containers. Most people won't use garbage bags and rodents love loose trash. NY is again wasting money and not researching this idea. Just ask Wisconsin homeowners and residents. B1

@@Stoney_Valentine In my neighborhood, we have people that empty their garbage in the plastic containers loose Can you imagine what their kitchen garbage can smells like? Then, the trash gets dumped out by the garbage collectors, they empty the containers, drop trash on the ground, and won't use their brooms and shovels to clean it up. Now, we have trash blowing into our yards.
