  • Erika Robuck joins me to talk about "The Last Twelve Miles" on this edition of "Some Books Considered." This historical novel is based on two real-life women on opposite sides of the law during the 1926 Rum War. One is a government agent and the other a rum runner. Each in their own way are outstanding women who accomplished much in the male-dominated 1920s.
Erika Robuck is the national bestselling author of numerous works of historical fiction including “Sisters of Night and Fog,” “The Invisible Woman,” and “Hemingway’s Girl.” She joins us to talk about “The Last Twelve Miles.”

Publicity for the book describes it this way...
From the glamorous world of D. C. Intelligence to the sultry shores of the Straits of Florida, THE LAST TWELVE MILES (June 4) by nationally bestselling author Erika Robuck follows two real, genius women from history-codebreaker Elizebeth Smith Friedman and rumrunner Marie Waite-trying to outwit each other in the dangerous and fascinating Prohibition Rum War of 1926.
Elizebeth Friedman is documented in the history books as the first woman to head an intelligence group, Coast Guard Unit 387, and she went on to serve as a codebreaker during WWII. Marie Waite’s past, however, is murkier. As author Erika Robuck explains, “no one could ever agree on Marie’s family origins, her eye color or height, [or] the number of boats in her flotilla…[but] upon Marie’s death, the consensus was that she had become a pillar of the community.
"Robuck has masterfully compiled all we do know about these two dynamic foils in this novel of suspense on the high seas that drives home a remarkable refrain: “What is good? What is bad? She was.”
